Two hours ago I had a dream where something horrible tore itself out of the city. It was like watching a wasp larva hatch out of a spider. I saw fire raging around everywhere. ReviewsLibrarian’s Book Choice by Joy Court, Librarian on the Reading ZoneOnce upon a time a tiny publisher found a book so perfect for the preschool children it specialised in that it strived long and hard tobring it eventually to the UK. That book was A Splendid Friend Indeed – shortlisted for the UKLA Book Award and beloved bythose teacher judges for the simplicity of the text and the impact of the evocative illustrations and its emotional truth.

Once again we have the perfect rendition of a very typical emo-tional problem for children of any age. The temptation and attraction of the new friend juxtaposed with loyalty to the oldfriend.

There is incredible emotion in these skilfully rendered highly textured pastel pictures. A pre-reader could completely tell the story from the pictures alone and indeed it will prompt very valu-able talk opportunities if you let them explain the pictures to you.

Without being at all preachy and issues-led and without any patronising notes for parents and teachers, this is a very valuable resource for emotional literacy and a brilliant demonstration of the efficacy of good quality picture books to speak to us all. We should all say a big Thank You to Alanna Books for bringingBear and Goose to the UK to become our friends too!

LonglistedUKLABook Awards2014

Another splendid story about friendshipWhat About Bear? is the much loved follow-up to award-winning A Splendid Friend, Indeed.

Best friends, Goose and Bear are joined by little Fox who wants to be friends... but only with Goose. Grumpy Bearleaves in disgust, but Goose drags him back and shows Fox that including friends is better than excluding them.

The dilemma of choosing one friend over another is a familiar childhood problem. Suzanne Bloom deals with the issue with the lightest of touches. Her fantastic illustrations perfectly capture disgruntled Bear, ever-anxiousGoose and tiny Fox and produce a story that children will love. A very useful book to help with discussions aboutfriendship, jealousies and sharing.

IBBY Link 36It is impossible to imagine a more effective book about the trials and tribulations of friendship for younger readers thanthis one... There is no clutter in this book, in either the wordsor the pictures, leaving plenty of room for some lengthy discussions between reader and adult on how we treat ourfriends and what really matters.

School Librarian A dilemma faced by most young children (and many adults!)is deftly resolved by Goose's good will... The bold simple textin this exceptional book tells the story of complex emotionsin only 100 words... The vibrant blue, green and turquoisebackground provides a striking backdrop for the drama.Bear's size and beautifully textured polar coat cannot protecthim from the roller-coaster of his own emotions. Little Fox,shy and sly by turns attempts to manipulate the situationwhile Goose's expressive eyes reflect his conflicting allegiancesand anxiety. This powerful story is a marvelous sequel to A SplendidFriend Indeed and will be remembered for many years. Anideal book to read aloud to children of 3+, this would be anexcellent trigger for classroom discussions and candle times.

Gorilla talk Fossey had names for many of the sounds the gorillas made. For example, pig grunts are noises the animals made to settle a fight or punish a naughty youngster. The hoot bark was heard when the gorillas were curious or frightened. She nicknamed many other sounds, including belch noises, and wraaghs. It took Fossey some time to learn to “speak” the gorillas’ language.
