Fall Siren’s Song
Greetings fellow members of Illiton,
This is the Fall edition of the Siren’s Song. In this edition you will see some of the beautiful scroll work from our scribal guild members. They are very talented and so I spotlight them in every edition that I can. I think the artistry of their work gives the newsletter a unique aspect that allows their art to be shown and shared to a greater audience.
Thank you to every member of the Scribal Guild: Please know that if you send me a picture of your scrolls before the wording is added I can use it in the newsletter.
In this quarters newsletter you will find the information about our events coming up in October. We have two events in our Barony: Fields of Cloth of Gold and All Hallows Revel. Please try to attend both events and volunteer your time to make these events a success.
Members of the cooking guild attended Cooks and Bards and in this edition you will see a cake made by Nessa and it truly shows her art as well.
Please as always let me know if there is something that you would like to see in the newsletter, Muriel
Fields of Cloth of Gold 2014
Fields of Cloth of Gold is the Barony of Illiton’s Fall event. This event is in two weeks and takes place in the city of Metamora, IL. Please check out our website for more information on this event. The event is a reenactment of the 1520 meeting between France and England. The English King, Henry the VIII and the French King, Francis the I in June. This famous meeting took place at the French Camp du Drap d’Or in Balinghem, between Guines and Ardres in France.
The Meeting was arranged to increase friendship of the nations and gave the monarchs a chance to show off. Each King was accompanied by 500 horseman and 3,000 troops. Everything from wrestling, fine dining, fencing, and jousting could be found at this event as well as the finest in clothing and arts.

SCA Rocks!
The hubby and I joined the SCA a year ago, but haven’t been very active, except for attending business meetings. This year, we attended the Rites of Spring in the Barony of Illiton, and the Squires Tournament in the Barony of Northwoods. We are overwhelmed at how welcome we felt at these events. We had learned that the Canton of Lochmorrow, which we call home, had been asked to provide lunch for Rites of Spring, so we volunteered, and it went off without a hitch. Lady Gillian was a treat to work with; the event was great, the weather perfect, (I KNOW someone in the SCA has connections and arranged that great weather) and someone even found Feast space for us. It was a really fun day for us. I even spent Money! Always a plus. And then, in June, we left our comfort zone (The Barony of Illiton, where we at least knew SOMEBODY) and went to Lansing, Michigan to attend the Squires Tournament. I wanted to take the Warranted Chronicler’s class, and that is where the instructor ( THL Rijckaert vanUtrecht, aka Dan Peacock) was. So we went. WOW! Not only were we not from a local group, we weren’t even from the same state. We were treated like long lost family. We were really impressed. I took my class, Nikolai, my husband Paul, took some baking classes, we learned a dance, watched fighting, met an author ( Becca Price), met Duchess AnneMarie, and generally had a great time. (Apparently the same guy had connections with the weather here too.) I hope all SCA events are this terrific. Now we are looking forward to Fields of Cloth of Gold, All Hallows Eve, Hands VIII, and the Shattered Crystal Ball. We’ve bought a Tent, a Pavilion, Cooking Grill, and Camping Gear; All because the SCA made us feel so welcome. So Huzzah to All! We really appreciate it.

Hoobah!!
A Cake Subtlety entered at Cooks and Bards
My subtlety is made up of 7 figures made out of fondant. Sitting around a circle singing to signify a bardic circle. I named it Come and Be Welcome, after the song. They are sitting on tree
stumps made of Rice Krispies and gum paste.
I imagined each character to have their own identity. A family in 15th century English clothing. The patriarch a knight and matriarch playing the harp is a knitter together with their two
children. The elderly woman in Viking clothing a cook. The archer in 14th century English clothing. And the Jester in 16th century clothing playing the flute. Each person has their own story, their own
interests but come together around the fire.
They sit on a 14in, 2 layer chocolate cake with buttercream frosting. Everything is edible except for a few structural components.
This is only the 2nd cake I've ever made so I spent probably a good 60-80 hrs coming up with
concept and making the piece
A couple of notes. I did use moulds for the figures to get anatomically correct figures. The clothing was pieced together using patterns. Similar to sewing. I think in the future I would use
gum paste to make figurines so I can get them to completely dry and stay true to their shape. It was fun and a challenge. And I'm already contemplating my next adventure.
