P resident's MessageCongratulations and welcome to the new Board Members who will be serving for the next three years: Jim Gould, Frank Cannella and Ed Deenihan. They were highly recommend by the nominating committee (Rick Hankins, Carl Marsh, John O'Donovan, Jim Clouser, John Johnson, Denny DeFreitas and Wally Mayer).

I would like to report that the recent Club-sponsored golf trip to Ireland was a great success. The 25 members who participated had an exciting golf experience and it was a wonderful country to visit and explore. The people were friendly and the food was exceptional. We hope that a similar trip will be planned to Scotland next year.

The Hacienda remodel vote was almost a 50/50 spilt this year. The Social Com-mittee recommended an alternative plan to accomplish similar goals without Membership assessment. The new recommendation, approved by the Board, was to update 2/3 of the Hacienda, the bar area, and outside patio and covert it to "Adult Dining Only." The dress code would be relaxed golf attire allowing denim. The remaining 1/3 of the Hacienda would be reserved for "Fine Dining" with a more formal dress code and no denim allowed at any time. The bar and patio area would be upgraded with new furniture and surrounding televisions. All this will be done in phases at a cost of $150k, which will become available from the Capital Budget Fund. The Grille area would be used for family dining, allowing children any time of the day. These changes look good in principal; however, we do request that you "the Members" have an open mind and give the staff an opportunity to make this underutilized area work. We can always make changes in the future to refine the process as needed to satisfy the Membership.

On August 11, the Board of Directors had an offsite retreat to discuss the future direction and strategy of the Club, with the focus on how we can retain and improve the category/pricing model of our Membership (i.e. Regular/Active/

Tennis/Young Executive/Dining etc.). The meeting was facilitated by Club Mark Corp. They are working with the Board and Staff to explore the current membership process and systems at Castlewood. We also reviewed future alternative mem-bership categories in order to attract and increase new membership at Castlewood. The meeting started with background information, the general state of the Golf Industry and National Trends, followed by Demographics/Culture/Strengths & Weaknesses at Castlewood. It was surprising to discover that the demographics in the Pleasanton area revealed that it is difficult to attract new Golf Members within 10 minutes from the Club. Approximately 130 Golf Courses have closed in the U.S. every year over the past five years. It is anticipated that 180 will close this year alone. The Golf Membership has dropped to 22 million in the U.S., down five million in the past 10 years.

All the data we reviewed points to one conclusion - we need to get creative and re-examine all Membership Categories in order for us to survive in the near future. If we want to continue to exist successfully as a Country Club, we must take appropriate action and think outside the box. Therefore, the Board will ask the Staff to implement some of the changes listed below. Recommendations discussed by the Board were as follows:

1. A new category for Senior Members is needed.2. Expand the Young Executive category.3. Continue to improve the Hacienda and Grille area for a more Casual Dining experience. 4. Increase the size of the Exercise Facility.5. Continue to improve the Tennis and Pool areas. 6. Have the Finance Committee investigate the possibility of creating a special Capital Fund for all facility improvements as mentioned above.

For the next few months the Board will work on the above recommendations and prepare the appropriate by-law changes for Membership vote and approval. We need to prioritize and implement items that maximize the return on investment. In addition, golf improvements will continue as planned with the $49/mo. Capital Funds.

The Best DealOur “Cart Lease Program” is the most economical way to pay for carts at our Club. If you like to ride carts vs. a lot of

walking, this lease is the way to go. The price is only $165 per month. After 11 rides, it pays for itself and all subsequent

rides are essentially free. If a Member purchases this lease, spouse and chil-dren are included. Carts can also be taken simultaneously; for example, on the Hill and the Valley courses at the same time. The lease has a 12-month minimum and the fee is billed monthly. We hope you can take advantage of this program.

Rules of GolfLast Month’s Question:

Player A’s ball comes to rest against a

boundary fence and it is also covered

by poison oak. Player A claims he

is entitled to relief without penalty

from either the boundary fence or a

dangerous situation, or both. Player

B tells Player A that he believes nei-

ther situation constitutes a free drop.

Disagreeing, Player A picks up his

ball and drops it within a club length

of its original position, not nearer the

hole and plays it. What is the ruling?

Answer:

Player B was correct, in that there

is no free relief from a boundary

fence or poison oak. When Player A

dropped his ball, he was by default

proceeding under Rule 28 (Ball Un-

playable) and incurred a one-stroke

penalty. If Player A did not add the

penalty stroke to his score for that

hole and subsequently signed his

scorecard, he would be disqualified.

This Month's Question:

A player's ball overhangs the lip of

the hole. He addresses the ball and it

falls into the hole. What is the ruling?

Junior Golf Tour of Northern CaliforniaThe year-end Tour Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course was won by Castlewood's Ryan Knop. He shot a two-round total of 135, 7-under for the tournament, including a spectacular 8-under, bogey-free 63 in the second round. His round was fueled by a hot putter and solid ball striking leading him to win by a margin of six shots.

Corena Green Golf TournamentCastlewood Juniors Kristen Yeh and Jasmin Krishna both performed well at the Corena Green Classic at Stockton Golf and Country Club. Both finished second in their age divisions with Kris-ten shooting a 40 and Jasmin shooting 43 over 9 holes.

American Junior Golf AssociationRaj Chekuri finished tied for 7th Place at the Under Armour/Scott Stallings Championship in Oak Ridge, Tennes-see, shooting rounds of 74-70-70–214, 2-under par. His steady game helped him secure his second Top 10 including a win earlier in March this year.

We shared lots of laughter, good food, drink and friendly companionship. Our fearless leader and golf pro, Greg Vasi-levskis, kept us on course and made sure we all left Ireland with the best of memories and none-the-worse-for wear. The people of Ireland were so accommodating and friendly making us feel very welcome. In fact, all the courses and many attractions flew the American flag alongside the Irish flag. The tales and the stories of the caddies were never-ending. We learned all kinds of names for shots such as: the mother-in-law shot was – it was nice when it left. The son-in-law shot was: it wasn’t as good as you would like, but it’ll do! I’m sure I speak for all of us in saying that it was a grand experience and hopefully we’ll see another such trip in the future. ~ Joyce Di Pietro

tion's most prestigious amateur tour-naments against top amateur players and collegiate golfers. He traveled to the Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur in Pull-man, Washington, where he was among the top 64 from stroke play qualifying to compete in match play. He also placed tied for 18th in the Pacific Coast Amateur by shooting rounds of 69-67-70-71–277, 3-under par. He also placed 4th in the U.S. Amateur qualifying at Castlewood's Valley Course shooting 66-71–137.

Congratulations to Sara Banke on win-ning the California Women's State Am-ateur Champion-ship at Ojai Valley Golf Course! Sara, a recent graduate of UC Irvine, had rounds of 68-72-73–213, 3-under par, winning by 2 shots. It was one of the biggest wins of her ca-reer as she spent the summer practicing hard and getting her game to the next level. Madison Hirsch, currently at Cal Poly, also had a good finish with rounds of 76-73-73–222, finishing 5th Place.

Bay Cities Junior Golf League The Castlewood Bay Cities team finished their regular season 5-1. After a tough loss at San Jose Country Club, 18.5-17.5, the final regular season match against Round Hill CC had playoff implications.

Castlewood won the match against Round Hill, 23-13, which qualified the team for the playoffs. In the match vs. Round Hill, there was some excep-tional play by Tanner Hughes and Ryan Maund with a best ball 62 on the Hill Course. Other standouts included: Will Richardson with a solid 68, Ryan Knop - 69, Zach Smith - 72, and Madison Hirsch and Aaron Chen with 74’s.

While traveling to Santa Rosa for the first round of the playoffs, the team lost a very competitive match, 19.5-16.5.

Congrats to the Castlewood Juniors for another great season as we look ahead to next year!

Sara Banke

Oh...the places we went, the golf we experi-enced, and the beauty we saw! Twenty-five of Castlewood’s fortunate Members were able to grace the Isles of Ireland in July. As members of Castlewood, many of us met for the first time. We enjoyed engaging in our experiences at home and reveling in the visions of Ireland and its splendor. Among those travelling, 18 of us golfed the inde-scribable link courses. The shots may have been good, bad or ugly, but the scenery was always beyond description. Among the courses we played were: Doonbeg, Ballybunion Golf Club, Waterville Golf Club, Old Head Golf Club, Mount Juliet and Portmarnock Golf Club Those who did not golf enjoyed shopping, sightseeing and relaxing. And, we ALL enjoyed lovely hotel accommodations and visited many historical and interesting sites such as the Blarney Stone and Guiness Brewery.

I guess since the year is half over, we had some anxious competitors who want to get in the November Ace of Aces Tourney The lucky trio was Ginny Vanni, Yong Choe and Canossa Sue with a net 73. Also qualifying for Putts was Bette Dela Fuente with 27 putts. Congratulations to all our July winners!

Competing in the AreaI heard word that Dee Brook competed in the Crow Canyon Invitational and lost a 5th Place tiebreaker to come in 6th. The theme was “Mad About Hats” – that sounds like fun! I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has competed in tournaments outside Castlewood so we can share the news.

Golfing Internationally Among the luckiest of us, Marilyn Him-melberg, Rosemary Hankins, Gloria Fuerniss and I were blessed to travel to Ireland on the Castlewood sponsored golf trip. One couldn’t help but pinch yourself to realize you were golfing in one of the most beautiful places in the world and standing at tees that were breathtaking. The courses were challenging and trying, but the visual pleasures and entertaining caddies gave way to any bad shots and made the good ones even more rewarding! Our Castlewood Pro, Greg Vasilevskis, kept us all intact. I think we all came back with a huge “high on Ireland” and memories that will last forever. Read more about the trip on Page 9 in this Forecaster.

Did You Know?I would like to give recognition to one of our Members who generously shares her time with others. Dee Brook likes to spend time on the golf course, but also volunteers in a community pro-gram provided by Diablo Counsel on

Bette Dela Fuente, Ginny Vanni, Yong Choe, Canossa Sue Aging. Each Wednesday, since 1989,

Dee has volunteered in a respite center for elderly adults who suffer from mild dementia. She helps to provide them with friendship, memory games and lunch. They engage in easy exercises, both mental and physical, and play games such as horseshoe, bean bag toss and other simple activities. Dee relates that sometimes she has to ad-just for special needs, but it’s always fun and very rewarding.

Dee also travelled to Antarctica this summer. She states that it was the most unusual and beautiful trip she has ever taken. She loved every moment of it and was pleasantly surprised about crossing the Dover Straight without any rough water – which is rare! I’m sure she would love to share many more of her travel experiences with you.

Great AchievementsBreaking 50Donna Colteaux came out swinging this month. Congratulations to Donna on breaking 50! She has been working on shortening her back swing and having an easy follow through. The trick Donna says, "let the club do the work." It certainly has worked for Donna. Her golf game just continues to get better.

Birdies Ann Carter recently vacationed with her family and took up kayaking. The kayaking obviously built up some golf muscle, as Ann got a “Birdie” on the Valley #18. Great shooting Ann. Chip-Ins The Castlettes had five chip-in winners this month. Our

“Super Chippers” are: Christi Hilton on Valley #4, Carol Arnold on the Hill #1, Nancy Barrett on Hill #1, Karma Glynn on Valley #5 and Fran Crisman on #5 in the Valley. New socks for these ladies as well as our congratulations and a well done!

Most ImprovedOur Most Improved Castlette title for the month goes to Elaine Blonigan. Elaine's index dropped from a respectable 15.4 to an amazing 14.2. Great month Elaine, congratu-lations! Charm WinnerThis month's “Charm” winner is Christi Hilton. Christi shot a fantastic

net 36 to secure the fabulous “Emerald Pen-dant Necklace” for the month and all the bragging rights that go with it. Golfing for jewels is so good! Congratulations Christi and wear it proudly. Tournament of ChampionsCongratulations to our “Tournament of Champion” winners: Overall winner was Maureen Shevlin, 1st Flight - Donna Col-teaux, 2nd Flight - Laura DeMott and 3rd Flight - Norma Lipman. These Castlettes will compete against other league winners on October 2 at Rancho Murieta Country Club. Good luck ladies!

Another season of bocce is upon us. It was great to see everyone and catch up after the summer break. It’s business as usual this season with four Regular leagues (32 teams) and one Recreation league (4 teams). Teams play Tuesday through Friday nights and Sundays. If

you missed out this season, our next season is Spring 2015. That should give you plenty of time to rally your friends and form a new team.

We had a great turn out for the "Intro to Bocce" clinic last month. It’s always fun to see all the new faces and meet some of our newest Castlewood Members. One of our brand new teams, Nuovi Rulli, was created from four couples that were paired up, none of them knowing the others. They all came to the clinic and seemed to really hit it off. When I left for the night, they were all still down at the courts enjoying themselves. As always, remember these teams are just getting their feet wet, so please welcome them if you happen to be in their league.

USTA Mixed Tennis LeaguesCastlewood's USTA Mixed Tennis Leagues are playing throughout the summer season. We have two 7.0 teams and two 6.0 teams.

The 7.0 captains are Dave Murawski and Kathy D'Onofrio. The 6.0 Teams are cap-tained by Arlie Alford/Robin Bunton and Chris Leone.

Captain Arlie Alford stated that the goal of our 6.0 Team is to encourage new par-ticipation in the tennis program with the

growing group of men golfers that have recently come into the tennis program. We are finding the golfers not only are expanding their Club experience, but are natu-rally athletic and really enjoying tennis. At the present we are in 1st Place, not only being a competitive team, but also having a great time.

In cooperation with Tennis Directors and General Managers of 10 of the East Bay's most prominent country clubs, we are proud to present a series of one night events that offer a social tennis experience which embodies the club experience. Tennis Directors will be on hand at the hosting clubs and will also be in communication to make the matches as competitive and compatible as possible. Match results will not be recorded but players who participate in any of the events will be eligible for a series ending tournament hosted by Blackhawk Country Club on November 16. For your convenience, we will be arranging the ten (10) participating clubs into two groups by proximity: Group A - Castlewood, Ruby Hill, Blackhawk, Crow Canyon and Diablo; Group B - Berkeley, Claremont, Moraga, Orinda and Round Hill.

at Ruby Hill

Proper preparation is all we really have control over in our efforts to win more matches or to win back

the cup. We came extremely close last year and we have a lot of

players who have really improved since last season and thankfully their USTA numbers have not

caught up to their current level of play. We need to start

knowing who will be available to play the weekend of the event and

also start having those players play together during the upcoming

mixed and combo seasons.
