We made a life changing decision to uproot our family 423 miles

away from what was our home back in 2006. I found myself alon.. with no friends. . and a family that had never been around a LEfamily. .. ever! ! They thought that my husband Ronald who hadbeen in LE for already 17 years when we moved would come hoeach night and "spill the beans" on everyone that had been arresed that night. Not happening! !

One day I was frustrated with being stuck at home with no one totalk to about LE life so I did a search. ..I Stumbled upon a groupawesome ladies! ! They got me! They know exactly how it felt being married to a LEO!! Right down to how your husband having tsit facing the door when we went out to dinner, and if he spottedsomeone he had previously arrested working in the kitchen...the"gig was up" we would never ever be able to go there again. ..

unless we ordered take out and used an alias!!

We shared the Badge Bunny stories. .. how to survive on LE salary. ..tips on getting the stanout of their duty vests. ..how to talk to your kids about why we don't always celebrate the holidays and birthdays on their actual at days! we've cried with each other...we've laughed just amuch..

Then that forum split up and we found ourselves lost with no home. A handful of us decided tstart our own support forum. That is when Wives Behind The Badge was born! It hasn't beeneasy... our founder Rose Winick.. thought about giving up. ..thank God she didn't!

Although members have come and gone, there are a few "old gals" still there with their wordswisdom for the young LEOW.. sharing every tip and trick to surviving LE life. .. pineapple recpes ..from how to get 30 minute lunch with your daddy even if your eating cold Burgers in theparking lot... the relief of the garage door sound even at midnight. ..the dreadful sound of Velsoon becomes music to their ears as well!

If I had to choose which program was my favorite, I'd have to choose our

H.A.L.O.S. pro-gram...I've seen how much it has helped the families of our fallen Heroes and for that I amproud to be a sister of WBTB.

WBTB has been my life saver for 6 years now...I imagine life without it. .. and find that it is nopossible. . there is still that One LEOW that we can help... that One LEO family that we canhave support to. .. that One person who once bashed our LEO's who now has more respect f

National Thank A Police Officer Day is the product of Andrew Hai

and The Whole Truth Project, dedicated to setting a day aside to

honor our men and women in law enforcement.

Thank A Police Officer Day was an instant success in 2012, brinin

together men and women to stand together across the nation to of-

fer not only heartfelt appreciation to our officers, but to get the

word out to the public and recruit them to take

one day out of their year to simply tell an officer,

    thank you.

Andrew Hail and the Whole Truth Project are no

just a one day a year organization . Their mission

is to protect innocent police officers who have bee

wrongly accused of police misconduct in wrongful

conviction lawsuits and other civil action cases.

Passionately dedicated to making sure the whole

story, the real story is heard, The Whole Truth Project stands in

    the gap for officers.

The Lassy Project Protecting Your Kids & Community From

Child AbductionsThe Lassy Project recently launched their system at the forefront of the child safety market. This sytem utilizes modern technologies aimed at preventing child abductions by quickly altering parents trouble and giving them the ability to alert hundreds of people in seconds to help. All with the simppush of a button! In the United States alone, there were over 250,000 child abductions last year. One abduction story

Colorado exposed some key issues to this problem. The Lassy Project searched for a solution thatcould prevent a tragedy like this from ever happening again and soon realized that it just didn't exiSo they decided to create one. Late notification when a child goes missing greatly increases the re-sponse times and decreases ability for law enforcement and the public to find the missing childquickly and bring them home safely.

The concept is simple: The Lassy Project allows parents to program the safe zones AND the routestheir child normally travels between the zones. Then alerting them instantly when the child straysmore than an acceptable distance from their routes. A parent can chose to contact the child to see ifeverything is okay, or escalate the alert to their entire Lassy Village for help.

The Lassy Village is another key feature to the program. The Lassy Project gives parents access tothe most powerful search and rescue team on the planet within seconds, with just one button. The vlage receives vital information, picture of the missing child all on their smart phones. With thestrength of the people who become a part of the Village, The Lassy Project becomes a powerful de-terrent for kidnappers. Please take a minute and join the village forFREE atwww.thelassyproject.com.

The Lassy Project is proud to be supported by Colorado Fraternal Order of Police & Wives Behind

    Truth and D.A.R.E.

My husband has a passion for teaching, he has a passion for making a difference in

the lives of kids, so he took that passion and harnessed it into a way that he could

be productive for both. He decided to become a D.A.R.E. Officer. Great, I thought,

what a wonderful venture to pursue. I had no idea, what all this pursuit of becom-ing a D.A.R.E. Officer would entail.

Up until D.A.R.E. became a part of our lives, I honestly didnt even know what it

stood for. I knew it was a drug program, but that was it. I didnt realize how ex-

tensive a program it really is. Now, I know differently and I have nothing but the

utmost respect for these men and women and the service they bring into the class-

room. To quote my husband, he said This was the hardest training I have ever

been a part of. You see, these officers undergo 80 hours of training with special-ized areas such as child development, classroom man-

    agement, teaching techniques and communication

skills. For us, the training was a two hour drive away

and the officers stayed at the hotel where the training

took place, only coming home for the weekend. This in

turn again puts the family into a tailspin. The spouse

becomes essentially a single parent for the training

time, much like while the officer was at the academy,

phone calls are very short and at the end of a very long

day (ours were just before he sat down to do home-

work). The kids ask, When will Dad/Mom be home?

It is a challenge for both the family and the officer.

So what exactly does D.A.R.E. stand for? Drug Abuse

Resistance Education. The D.A.R.E. mission is

Teaching students good decision making skills to help

them lead safe and healthy lives. And their vision is

A world in which students everywhere are empowered

to respect others and choose to lead lives free from vio-

lence, substance abuse and other dangerous behaviors.

This international program was founded by Daryl F

Gates and works towards the prevention of controlled substances, membership in

    gangs, and violent behavior.

Now, before I go any further, you are probably wondering...what is the deal with the

stuffed lion. Allow me to introduce Darren. My husband brought Darren home one wee

end., in fact it was Red Carpet Honor Band weekend, and so this

adorable little critter came with us, just as you see him pictured

here. At training, the officers were broken up into color coded

teams. Each day, they would engage in friendly completion to tr

to win Darren. The team who won the lion was then able to

dress him however they deemed fit in their team colors., coverin

up previous winning teams items. There was a catch to winning

him however. If your team set

him down, one of the other teams

    could STEAL Darren away and

    then your team...well, your team

    had to face some embarrassing

    consequences. Darren became an

    instant celebrity with our kids

bandmates, who all ended up having pictures taken with

him. But Darren is not just a stuffed animal. He is a

teaching companion and is loved by D.A.R.E. students,

along with the officers who share the classroom with them. And when these officers wer

presented their very own Darren by children at their graduation, to see the tears of appr

ciation and accomplishments flow, this stuffed animal will NEVER be just a stuffed ani-

    mal, but a partner.

For D.AR.E. to work, the local police officers partner with schools and go into the class-

room, providing programs for all ages and according to the D.A.R.E. website 36 MILLIO

children worldwide, 26 MILLION in the US, a part of this program. That breaks down t

75% of the nations school districts. Just recently, D.A.R.E. adopted Penn States Keepi

it REAL, a middle school curriculum that is an evidence-based program and is being im

plemented by D.A,R,E, in the US and across the world.

I got to see my husband in action firsthand last fall as he taught our communitys 6th

grade students. It was an eye opening experience to hear the statistics and scenarios

brought forth through this program. To learn things that even I at 39 didnt know. To

hear these kids ask relevant questions and give answers that one would not think 6th

graders would give or ask. To see them approach my husband at the classes end to ask

things in private on how to handle different situations. To participate and enjoy learnin

what this program is about. To see him make changes in the lives of young people, that

a true reward for such extensive training and the time spent away from home, locked up

in a hotel studying as he never has before.

I wanted to share this story about my daughters

and their GIANT hearts. We live in Oklahoma and

as the country knows, we experienced greattragedy a couple months ago. My daughters,Kendall who is 4, and Madden, who is 2, wanted

to help just like everyone. Kendall, being theoldest ,decided that a lemonade stand was the

way to go! So thats just what we did. We set upa lemonade stand right outside of our house on a

Saturday afternoon and sold lemonade likeCRAZY!! I lost track of how many pitchers wemade! We live on a fairly busy street and the

hank you Mom, Melissa Kingry, for letting WBTB

Reader Submission: BLK putting smiles on other peoples faces

I had tears in my eyesseveral times as people

would approach the kids andtell them what an amazingthing they were doing. The

generosity of the communitypoured out that day and I feltmore than blessed that thiswas all the hands of my 4year old daughter. As the

day wrapped up we countedthe money and were in utter

shock at how much moneywas raised. Nearly $400!!

We have a dear friends cousin

lost everything in the tornado, as

well as one of my husbands fellow

officers son. We wanted to help

both of them since we knew them

so well, so Kendall and I went toWal-Mart and purchased 2 gift

Safety Tips from the National Safety Councilwww.nsc.org

    Transportation Safety

Whether children walk, ride their bicycle or take the bus to school, it is extremely important that

hey take proper safety precautions. Here are some tips to make sure your child safely travels

    o school.

    Walking to school

Review your familys walking safety rules.

Walk on the sidewalk, if one is available. When on a street with no sidewalk, walk facing the traffic.

Before you cross the street, stop and look all ways to see if cars are coming.

Never dart out in front of a parked car.

Practice walking to school with your child.

    Riding a bicycle to school

Make sure your child always wears his helmet when leaving the house.

Teach your children the rules of the road they need to know to ride their bicycles.

Ride on the right side of the road and in a single file.

Come to a complete stop before crossing the street.

    Riding the bus to school

Go to the bus stop with your child to teach them the proper way to get on and off the bus.

Make sure your children stand six feet away from the curb.

If your child and you need to cross the street in front of the bus, walk on the side of the road until you are at least 12 fe

ahead of the bus. You always should be able to see the bus driver, and the bus driver always should be able to see you.

    School Safety

Many school-related injuries are completely preventable. Follow these steps to ensure your childs safety at school.

    Preventing backpack-related injuries

Chose a backpack for your child carefully. It should have ergonomically designed features to enhance safety and comfor

Dont overstuff a backpack; it should weigh no more than 10 to 20 percent of your childs body weight.

For example, a child that weighs 60 pounds should carry a backpack no heavier than 12 pounds.

Ask your children to use both straps when wearing their backpack to evenly distribute the weight.

    Preventing playground-related injuries

Encourage your child only to use playgrounds with a soft surface. Avoid playgrounds with concrete, grass and dirt sur

    as they are too hard.

Children under the age of four should not use climbing equipment and watch older children when theyre climbing.

Do not let your children use monkey bars. They are unsafe and should not be used by children of any age.

    1. Sometimes you are going to cook lunch or supper

and they will get called to a wreck or domestic dispute.Just take that yummy meal, put it on a plate, and put it in the fridge.

He will come home later and will love your cooking then.

    2. When his phone rings at 1:00 am, don't freak out.

Getting called out will not happen as much as you think it's going to.

    3. Don't plan anything way ahead.People are always asking me to do things 3 or 4 months in advance.

My life doesn't work that way.

If it is something very important tell your DH he will need to take off

but otherwise just wait. Hopefully people will understand.

    4. Holidays are just another day of the week for a police man.

The fun days when everyone is getting togetherare my DHs biggest work days.

Try to make the day special and start your own family traditions.

    5. Sometimes we will be right in the middle of a conversation

and he will say "Can I call you back, I've gotta go get this guy"

Just let them go and they will call you right back

after they have ruined some poor speeding souls day.

    6. Never underestimate the power of a drunk to ruin your plans. Ugh!

Shift WorkAlthough shift work varies from department to department,

it still stinks sometimes. Make the time you have together count.

    Make time for dates.

For us once a week isn't possible, but we try to go out as much as we can.

Keep your kids in some type of routine.

Keep bed times and supper times as close to normal as you can.

Just because your DH is staying out until midnight, doesn't mean you all have to stay up too.

    0. Find things to look forward to when your husband is working nights.

Go get that movie you love and he hates.

I do most of my sewing and crafts when he works nights and I look forward to it every month.

. If you are a big scared-i-cat like me, get a security alarm.

I set it and can sleep knowing we are safe. We have ADT and I always feel good when it's on.

    2. Be independent!

Don't be scared to go to that party with friends or church event without your DH.

It can be scary sometimes, but load the kids in the car and just go.

    3. Build a support system of friends, family, etc. who know that sometimes you will

be without the husband, and who will welcome you and help you out too.

    4. Let them take naps...they aren't being lazy. Staying up all night isn't easy.

I have a bag that I put get ready stuff in for when I know I will need to getdressedwhile he's sleeping. Then I just move into the other bathroom just for that day.

    5. Invest in some dark or blackout curtains.

I took regular black ones and put them behind my pretty ones in the bedroom.

It makes a huge difference and makes the room ideal for nap taking after a night of work.

    6. Plan your meals around your spouses shift work. Plan easy quick meals

during the night shifts so that if they get to come home, you can just relax.Save your Pinterest inspired creations for when you have more time.

    Deal with the Fear

    17. Don't play the "What If?" game.

They are probably fine and laying in bed in the dark thinking about

every terrible cop show you have ever seen isn't going to help.

    18. If you call them and they don't answer, don't assume the worst.Usually when my DH doesn't answer, he is doing something

very safe and very unexciting. :)19. Always give hugs and kisses and say "I Love You"

I like for that to always be the last thing he hears me say before he goes to work.

    20. Don't let him tell you every detail of the terrible fight he was in

or terrible wreck he just worked at night.

Ask him nicely to tell you in the morning.I always take the devastating details better when the sun is up!

    21. There are lots of very silly stupid people out there.

The good news is that most of them are scared to death

of your DH and what is going to happen to them. This always makes me feel better.

    22. Don't over share information with your children.

They will find out about the dangers of their

dad or moms job soon enough.

    23. Pray Pray Pray!I don't know how I could be a Police Wife without my faith in God.

I know that he is watching over DH every second

and that everything happens for a reason.

    24. They have chosen this importantand sometimes difficult and dangerous job.

Make sure they know how proud you are as often as you can.

    25. Subscribe to XM radio if your husband is in the car most of the time.DH loves his XM!

    26. Let them share their stories with their adoring public.I have stood as people lined up at church to hear what DH did on a Saturday ni

I guess they love to hear the stories and guys love to tell them too so it works o

    27. People love to make the same jokes about

what car they drive and not to pull them over.

Just laugh every time even if you want to cry from hearing it for the 1000th time

    28. Make sure your kids are proud of their dad (or mom).

Go to their parent days dressed in uniform.Let them get in the car and pretend.

Buy them all of the police clothes they can find.

    29. Respect all officers from other departments

and teach your kids to do this too.I know there are friendly rivalries between the city, state, and sheriff offices,

but they are all working toward the common goal to keep people safe.

    30. Be supportive even when you don't want to.

It's not always easy but help them as much as you can.

    BOX FIVE POLICE ARTW W W . BO X F I V E P O L I CE A RT . CO M

Box Five Art starting in Oklahoma City in 2007. Artist Randy

Sappo was searching for how to create a gift for friends who

were placement in the area. At that time, his focus was for pro-

jects such as comic books, childrens books and medical illustra-

    tions.

When realizing there was a market for Law Enforcement Art, in

2009, Randy created a separate division of Box Five Art Studio,Box Five Police Art, to showcase this particular work.

Since its conception, Box Five Police Art has produces more than

seventy prints for more than 50 departments nationwide, including Colorado, Florida, Louisiana,

North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Box Five is continually adding new departments to their ever-expanding list of prints available,

and their main selling point is, there is no cost to a department to have a print developed. All

that needs to be done is for the departments Chief to authorize the development of the print. An

amazing opportunity as it is hard to find anything print related with department specific

    graphics.

Box Five also provides fundraising opportunists with their prints. Simply contact them to find

out how they can work with your department or organization .

Partnering with Frame Maker Designs, in Frisco, TX,

Box Five can offer multiple custom framing options for

all standard sized illustrations and prints.

For more information, contact Box Five Police Art at:

The Police Wife Life, LLC, is dedicated to the support of Law En-

forcement Officers and focused on bringing awareness to the need

for the support of our Law Enforcement Officers as well as bring-

ing back the respect for our Officers from the general public. My

mission is legislative change through my Bill, One Strike Youre

Out, Protective Measures for Law Enforcement Officers, which if

adopted Nationally would change the sentencing laws to require

long term, fully served sentences with no parole options or plea

agreements for repeat offenders who assault or attempt to injure

an Officer. It would require mandatory life sentences with no pa-

role option for those who murder an Officer, with no option of plea

deals for lesser charges (for those states with no death penalty). My goal is to keep repeat offenders off our streets and to instill

fear back into the minds of criminals who currently have no regard

for the lives of our Officers due to the lack of current consequences

    from our Government.

TPWL is a National online community

which offers support to those in LawEnforcement, spouses, family or loved

    ones.
