BOARD OF DIRECTORS

EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT STAFF

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Derby

Days. A special thanks to Derby Days Chairman,

Pat O’Neill, Jr., who had the vision a few years back to create

Derby Days - a weekend of events dedicated to the members

of Town & Country Club.

This year’s Derby Days kicked off with over 120 golfers participating in a fun and

casual Par 3 Tournament, followed by the All in White Party on top of the driving

range. We had a women’s golf tournament, which was won by Marie Tufford and

Schelly Vaaler and highlighted by a hole in one by Martha Bogie.

The men’s golf tournament took place

over two days and was won by Dan

O’Brien and Charley Stewart.

In addition, the junior tennis

tournament crowned champions at all

age levels. Derby Days concluded

with a Hawaiian themed pool party that included a pig roast and mechanical

surfboard (think mechanical bull, except with a surfboard) for those with enough

courage to give it a try.

All of this could not have been accomplished without the

great staff that we have at T&C. They did an amazing job

with outstanding food, service, and creative ideas around

decorations - making it fun for all. Derby Days has

become one of the best (if not the best) weekends of the

year at T&C!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer and I look forward to seeing you at the

Club this fall!

Derby Days Weekend Outstanding Again! The weekend kicked off on a Thursday with the entire golf course turned into a Par 3 course for over 120 players. The

four-person scramble format proved tougher than most anticipated as five under par was the top score. Congratulations to Jim & Sheila Moar, John Guttery and Laura Jacobson for winning the 3

rd Annual Par 3 tournament. As we moved into Friday, the

ladies began their Derby Days event with a stableford point format. Marie Tufford & Schelly Vaaler beat the field by seven points to claim the Ladies Derby Days Championship. Friday afternoon began the men’s event….11 flights of four teams all competing to advance to the Shootout where they would have the opportunity to be named Derby Days Champion. In the end, Charley Stewart & Dan O’Brien outlasted the field and took their first Member-Member Championship. Congratulations on a well played tournament and strong finish!

Men’s League Finale The 12-week Men’s League season concluded in perfect fashion as 100+ players came out to compete for team and individual honors. Congratulations to the Ash Bores (Tim Fallon, Joe Foley, Nate Hughes, Joe Keeley & Eric Rapp) for winning their first Team Championship in Men’s League. For the Individual Shootout, we took the top three players from various categories. They battled through four holes of high pressure situations, looming darkness and a little heckling from spectators. After three holes of eliminating players, it was Rocky Berndt, Matt Winkel, Charley Stewart and Keith Berger standing on the final hole. Matt Winkel drained a 30 foot downhill putt to put him in the lead by one point. Rocky Berndt was left with a five foot breaking putt for par to gain two points and take the Championship. He drained it! Congratulations to Rocky Berndt....and all who made the shootout. Full results below:

Run For the Roses This six-hole shootout pairs the ladies top 13 net scores of the year together to determine the winner. There was a lot of excitement (and almost a hole in one by Laura Jacobson on #3) as three ladies advanced to the final hole. Laura Jacobson, Chris Brady and Ann Claridge all played very smart and steady to put themselves in position to win. Laura had a 15-foot sidehill putt and all she needed was to two-putt to win. Instead, she knocked it in and claimed yet another championship in her first year at T&C. Congratulations Laura on your “Run for the Roses” victory.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Started at T&C: December 1st, 1989 Current Position: Turf Facilities and Equipment Manager First Day Memory: The operation was in total disarray. The entire shop and equipment were in need of serious attention. Fondest T&C Moments: Working with General Manager, George Carroll, and getting to know some of the members, especially George Jeddeloh. Working with current and former employees has contributed to some of the fondest memories. Retire Date: Hopefully 5 to 7 years, if everything goes right. Best thing about working at T&C: Working out of the state of the art Turfgrass Facility. Working on newer equipment because of the improved quality of machinery is enjoyable. Really enjoy the summer months and working with the doors open. Fun Fact: Mike likes to work on classic cars and vintage snowmobiles. He also enjoys hunting, downhill skiing and hanging out with family and friends. Mike has 3 grown children and 3 grandchildren.

Thank you Mike for nearly 24 years of service and

dedication to Town & Country Club.

Wedge Lie Angle and Accuracy Wedges play a pivotal role in our short games. To insure consistent results, all your wedges should have similar lie angles (the angle between the shaft and the ground). The lie angle affects the direction and side swing of your wedge shots. Problem is that one companies’ wedge has a different lie angle than the next. “Standard” specifications for wedges range from 63 to 65 degrees. Also, manufacturing imperfections and hitting shots off hard ground can change the Lie angle. Even brand new wedges are often times out of calibration, direct from the factory. Let’s say your Pitching Wedge (PW) has a lie angle of 65 degrees while your Sand Wedge (SW) is at 63 degrees. If you swing them with the same swing motion , the PW shot WILL end up left of the SW by 5 to 15 feet, depending on how far you hit the ball. In order to hit the PW and SW in the same direction, you will have to aim them differently or modify your swing, which is generally what golfers do. Correct lie angles in your wedges will help you hit wedge shots straighter overall. Since your wedges are adjustable, they can be calibrated to each other with the correct lie angels. Check with the professionals in The Golf Shop if you have any questions. We’ll make sure your wedges are dialed in for your next round.

John Kain, Executive Chef

September brings the end of another successful and enjoyable summer at the Club. It has been a privilege to serve all your families this season and we look forward to providing more fun and relaxation at the Pool in 2014. We have a busy fall season ahead with a myriad of member events planned. Be sure to check the calendar for all the information and remember to make your reservation early, so you don’t miss out.

This month we welcome a new member to our culinary management team, Adam Fredrickson. Adam is our new sous chef with his main focus being on member dining. Adam comes to us from Heartland in Saint Paul, where he was an integral part of their local food network and farm to table initiatives. We are excited to have him on board and feel he will make an excellent addition to our team as well as an asset to the membership. Below is his bio, please join me in welcoming Adam to T&C.

Chef ’s Corner

Town & Country Club Welcomes...

Name: Adam Fredrickson Start date: September 2013 Position: Sous Chef Background: Started in the kitchen washing dishes and eventually worked his way up through the ranks and joined the “white coats.” Adam is a graduate of Winona State University and College of Culinary Arts at Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte, North Carolina. Most recently, Adam was the Sous Chef at Heartland Restaurant. For fun, Adam enjoys: Being outdoors, foraging for mushrooms and other edibles,

playing disc golf, spending time with his new daughter, Juliana (7 months) and fiancée, Loralyn.

Our bunker renovation project is the most significant enhance-ment to our historic golf course in nearly one hundred years. I am happy to report that as this article is published the front nine is nearly complete. Work will continue through October on the back nine. Through extensive research by Bill Larson, our Superintendent, input from the Green Committee, our architect and many others, Bill adopted a very unique style of bunkering that is distinctive to T&C and a fitting enhancement to our course as we celebrate our 125

th year. Most courses

undergoing such renovations hire a contractor, but they don’t have Bill Larson as their Superintendent. Bill has managed every aspect of the project with his crew and reduced overall costs by hundreds of thousands of dollars in doing so. In advance of the project getting started I took the opportunity to meet and speak with numerous other Green Committee members and chairs from area clubs who underwent recent course renovations. They all had one thing in common - they all knew Bill Larson and all agreed he is the best in the business.

Above: Bill Larson, CGCS, and Tyler Rose, Turf Intern The new bunkers are engineered to properly drain and provide consistency in bunker play. The technology that is being used will significantly decrease, and in most cases eliminate, washouts after heavy rains. Bill sets up our course with very consistent green speeds, very consistent cut heights for greens, tees, fairways, collars and rough. Now we can count on some consistency and four inches of sand in the new bunkers. As playable, spectacular and beautiful as the new bunkers are, try not to hit it there. If you do, count on a fair shot! Beyond the new bunkers, Bill and his crew have been able to dramatically improve the quality of turf surrounding our greens, tees and bunkers. We have restored and opened up the approaches significantly on nearly every hole on the front nine. In addition to the new bunkers, we built new tee boxes on #5, #7, a forward tee on #9 and removed over 100 yards of unsightly and unnecessary carts paths. We have identified

and removed trees that were seriously compromising turf quality surrounding greens and tees. Constructing the new bunkers afforded the opportunity to properly irrigate the newly sodded areas, which will ensure high quality turf for years to come. The amount of new blue grass rough height sod and bent grass fairway height sod put down over the past few months can be measured not by the yard - not by the truck load - but by the ACRE! In just a few weeks all holes on the front nine will be fully in play without Ground-Under-Repair. The project will continue through the fall and wrap up sometime next season. Bill and his crew will continue with the bunkering and expect to see similar improvements to turf, tees and greens on the back nine. The end results of the new bunkering have been extremely well received and garnered the attention of Superintendents and golf enthusiasts well beyond our membership. Bill and I welcome any feedback, suggestions or comments. Bill and his crew have put in many 12-plus hour days keeping this project on time and on budget; not to mention getting our course in top notch condition. While we had some compromised turf conditions earlier in the season after one of the harshest winters and wettest springs on record, our turf quality is now at optimal conditions. Take the opportunity to thank Bill and his hardworking team next time you see them on the course. Follow Bill and his crew on Twitter @tcturf for bunker renovation updates and photos.
