What is that what you say, 'help us'?

Yes gentlemen we at National want to help you to ensure that yourclub has a future and not just a past. We are aware of the problemsmanyofyou face, oftendue to theclosureofyour localRoundTable, but we are acutely aware that there are many ex-Round Tablers outthere who never joined 41 Club but who now may be interested.

We are planning a marketing campaign to find those potentialmembers and will be providing materials to support you. This willinclude posters, advertisements, newspaper and radio interviewsand anything else that can be provided at a reasonable cost. We canno longer rely on the automatic supply of Tablers leaving each yearand we aim to become much more pro-active in finding thosemembers. Believe me gentlemen other organisations are activelyseeking out and recruiting your potential members.

But before we can help you we need your help. I am sure that everyone of you could name at least ten members of your Table that havenever joined 41Club. There arewhole towns and even cities that are

'black holes' for 41 Club.

Somaywe ask you to let us knowwherewe can help and howwecanhelp your club in particular. Some clubs will invariably disappear, but new younger clubs are being formed every month. Help us toidentify where new clubs could be started. Produce a list of peoplewho may be interested, let us provide you with suitable materials orarrange for a 41er to appear on local radio. There is a lot we can beproud of in our history and we should be just as proud of our future.

So now, how can we help you? Please send your ideas to theNewsletter in order that we can publish them in the next edition.

Remember that the National organisation is here to promote ourgreat fellowship movement and not just to organise the AGM andpublish communications.

Let us work together to create a brighter future for 41 Club!

SHOWTIME!

41 Club and TangentNational Conference Bournemouth 2014

It is now5months (and 7 to go) sinceBournemouthConferencewasunveiled at the Llandudno Conference back in April.

The committee have continued to be busy and now the long hotsummer seems regretfully to be giving way to Autumn the pace oforganisation, rather than coolingwith theweather, is going to hot up.

All our entertainment for the Conference has now been sorted, withthe finer details being negotiated and put in place.

Bookings continue to roll in, and despite the end of the early birdbooking promotion and the inevitable pause in the rush, we haveover 200 delegates now booked in.

Early bookings at the Royal Bath Hotel have almost claimed all theoriginal hotel rooms. However the Royal Bath, which is undergoing

a major expansion, has recently completed 10 new modern roomswhich are now available. We look forward to the next release of newrooms in this ongoing programme. Remember we have plenty ofhotel capacity inBournemouth. If youwant to stay at theRoyalBathplease continue tobook to avoiddisappointment. However youmayfind that car parking becomes limited so the Premier Inn and otherhotels may offer more convenient capacity.

Bournemouth has always been an attractive andwell attended venueand it is recommended that bookings for the package are not left tothe last minute so to ensure there is no disappointment due tonumbers being exceeded for the various activities on offer.

WestonSuperMare41Club isveryproudto report that after 60 years service ourmember Derek Chapman has beenawarded the prestigious ' Flame of Hope'Fellowship by Cancer Research U.K.

Back in1953Derek, amember ofWestonSuper Mare Round Table 110, was at ameeting where a talk was given by thethen British Empire Cancer Campaign. When Round Table were asked if theywould consider supporting the charity,Derek volunteered to help set up a fundraising committee; which has nowreached its 60th anniversary. He and his

lovely wife Yvonne put their hearts and souls into raising moneycreatingmonthly special dinners, knit- ins. picnics etc: the list goes onand on. Now in his 87th year, Derek has been instrumental in raisingwell over amillion pounds. He is clearly a credit to both Round Tableand 41 Club.

On the 18thOctober a special dinner is being organised to honour himand the 60th Anniversary. Anyone wishing to attend please contactthe organisers on 01278 769078.

Derek's Flame Of Hope

Youwon’t have heard of us becausewe’vemanaged to keep a lowprofile for 50 years. But you will gather from the interesting useof consonants that we are from Wales {South East – just aboveNewport and beneath Pontypool (if that’s possible)}. Anyway, tired of hiding our light under a bushel, we are going to have onehell of a party pretty much on the actual 50th anniversary of ourcharter. The date: Tuesday March 25th 2014.

National President, Martin will honour us with his presence andwe hope to honour him by contributing to his Macmillan appealwith proceeds from a sponsored walk - an arduous, mountainous, possibly calamitous perambulation across the Black Mountainson St David’s Day.

Apart from bread throwing and beer spilling competitions, entertainment will be provided by comedian Bob Webb a localfavourite with an international reputation (known to Interpol).

At £25 per head, therewill undoubtedly be pressure on tickets andearly application to [email protected] is advisable. Ifyou are otherwise engaged on that day you might, nevertheless, wish to take part in the proceedings by sponsoring the said walk.Sponsorship forms or donation details will be supplied onapplication to Roger.

This is a great opportunity to celebrate 41 Club and Tablinggenerally, acknowledging all it has meant to so many down theyears and the occasion will be greatly enhanced by support andgood wishes from brethren near and far. It’ll be nice to hear fromyou.

Itwouldbegreat tohaveasmanyCirclers andfriends support us both by cycling all or part of the route.Alternativelywewill need help at themany planned stops to providemuchneededdrinks, food andmoral support to keep the teamgoing .

Having read your article onObituaries Iwould like to put forward anopinion and suggestion. If clubs do not record the fact that amember has died, it is possible that their name will be forgottenforever. I have overcome this possibility in Pinner by creating abooklet with every members name, recording when they joined anddied and the offices they held. This includes all members of ourTable (nowclosed),LadiesCircle (also closed) andTangent. Whilstthis is only available in a printed version, I do keep it up to date andit is available to anyone requesting it.

In my connection with Scouting however, in the County of GreaterLondon Middlesex West, I have created and online ‘Book ofRemembrance’ which includes if available, a Photograph of thedeceased, their Awards, and a Tribute or Eulogy. This is availableto any member by logging on to our County Website.

I would recommend to any club, that whatever method they decideto use to record past members, that they do it.

Ken Crisp. Assistant Secretary Pinner 41 Club.

Firstly, congratulations on resuming your role as editor of ournewsletter. I’m certain the combination of editorial experience, enthusiasm for the organisation and your listening approach to thereadership will continue to serve the publication well.

I pick up your thread on the publication of obituaries and yourinterest in what the readership thinks about this aspect of content. Iwould make the following observations.

·As a friendship organisation, especially old friends, close friendsand often far flung friends, access to this news is important for oldcontacts and is an opportunity to publicly remember andacknowledge the contribution and value of long serving Tablemembers to their friends and to the organisations. Although sad forthe loss of a friend, the memories invoked are frequently warm, happy and sometimes inspiring.

·Space is, of course, an important consideration and inclusion ofoccasional obituaries seems practical along with, perhaps, a list ofnames submitted by clubs. However, fuller tributes and photos

might be reserved for a section on the National website that can bevisited at leisure by any member wishing to pick up on the detail ofa particular name or announcement.

·Remembering and honouring past members would not be anobvious deterrent to new members of an organisation that exists topreserve memories and friendships, albeit with the opportunity tocontinue to provide service alongside our Table colleagues.

·Providing obituaries for past colleagues imbues the organisationwith respect and affection, qualitieswhichmostmembersmight feelentirely appropriate.

Finally, might I suggest the inclusion of an ‘anti-obituary’.Why notinclude a ‘Births’ section celebrating newmembers joining our clubwith a brief profile of their activities and Table service and perhapstheir aspirations for their membership and their new club for thefuture. Perhaps this might also uplift and inspire.

Norvil McClurg, Fellowship Officer. Ponteland 41 Club

Reference your editorial in the current newsletter, I believe 41 clubsshould have the facility of paying tribute to members who havepassed away - I always search the obituary column to check if myname appears - and I would vote for option 2) so that a full obituarycan be viewed on thewebsite by anyonewho recognises the name ofa past colleague.

Peter Bishop, Chesham 41 Club

I am a fan of continuing as we are and I am not sure of any reason tochange. Cannot speak for anyone other than Table (I am a recenttransferee), but Tabler is not what it was and one of the criticisms ofthe magazine in recent years has been that there really is so little init. I hadn't realised the obituaries had stopped (being a younger club, there were never that many anyway), but if they have, then they arejust one of a raft of regular features that are no more.

Brian Steele, Chairman, Worthing Round Table 41 Club

Last month I invited your comments on how we handle obituaries in the future, in the light thatvery few organisations now carry obituary columns in their club magazines and the growth ofthe use of the internet. I was expecting a flood of objections but instead have received somevery well argued responses which I include here in full.

Consequently we are investigatingways of implementing some of the suggestionsmade in thecorrespondence. We will confirm this as soon as it has been finalised.

“You know you're getting old when the candles cost more than thecake.”

“Abank is a place thatwill lend youmoney if you can prove that youdon't need it.”

“Whenwe recall the past, weusually find that it is the simplest things- not the great occasions - that in retrospect give off the greatest glowof happiness.”

“If you haven't any charity in your heart, you have the worst kind ofheart trouble.”

“When she started to play, Steinway came down personally andrubbed his name off the piano. ”

“She said she was approaching forty, and I couldn'thelp wondering from what direction. ”

“I grew up with six brothers. That's how I learnedhow to dance- waiting for the bathroom.”

“A JamesCagney love scene is onewhere he lets the other guy live.”

“Asenseofhumor isgood foryou.Haveyoueverheardof a laughinghyena with heartburn? ”

“I do benefits for all religions. I'd hate to blow the hereafter on atechnicality.”
