by George Patterson, ARPCA President

And I’ll see you… in September… Here we are in September… Summer a blur but not yet done and the crispness of Fall before us. There are Football games, First days of school and Formula 1 Finales before us, not to mention great ARPCA events. But before I get to all of that, I have to tell you that I just went through the August RS [Rundschau for those of you who’ve not yet had coffee…] and must express to you that I feel a major pang of pride. Our monthly publication has never looked better in the 2 decades I’ve re-ceived it. The art direction, layout, event images and content [from first time contributors!] are all simply wonderful and highly professional… My business, which funds my PA [Porsche Addiction] has a great deal to do with selling stories – taking a target demographic and enticing them to buy specific products to ensure that they will have a fulfilling life with the aforementioned products. Simply stated, you want to be the person in the picture… Well, having looked carefully at each page of the August RS, I not only want to be the person in the picture, but I also want to ensure a steady supply of the sought-after picture… Paul Nickoloff and Rob Hoffmann, along with Jack Pur-vis and Scott Ishler make each month’s newsletter truly spectacular. There were dark days in my two decades in our club when our monthly publica-tion was nothing more than an 8 x 11 piece of pa-per, halved, stapled and mailed… So I want to start this month’s newsletter with a dose of thanks and congratulations to these people, along with all those who are supplying content [can’t wait for parts 2-3 Mr. Hopey!]. The Rundschau parallels the new-look Panorama both in style and content – groovy stories about a groovy bunch of people engaging in groovy activities. I, along with Greg Brady, tend to like that particular ‘70’s-era adjec-tive…

In addition to our newsletter looking great on the layout and content side, have you seen the level of our advertisers? Talk about groovy [OK,

Page 7: September 2013 - ARPCAarpca.com › files › documents › rundschau › 2013 › Rundschau... · ramblings, graphics, and photos. Please send submissions via mail or email to the

I’ll stop…]. Both area Porsche dealerships, Henne Jewelers, Eyetique Eyewear, Howard Hanna Real Estate, Goosebumps Audio, Fo-torecord, SGK Attorneys, Pecori & Pecori At-torneys [both of whom are great friends for those of us with a heavy right foot…] are all featured. Talk about groovy [Sorry, I lied…]. This publication goes out to 1000+ highly targeted, demographically sought-after peo-ple each month. If you, your company or a company with whom you do business wants exposure to an enviable and actionable audi-ence, RS is the ticket.

Lastly regarding our newsletter, I want to thank all those who take the time to capture events with images. As I look through the Au-gust RS, I see so many cool images that are demonstrative of our club mantra that ‘it’s not the cars, it’s the people.’ From my former 986S winning its class in the PVGP Concours [it was never so clean under my ownership…] to the lovely Claudia Pryor rolling into Schen-ley Park in her 600 HP 911 Turbo, each im-age we see is a fantastic still of a moment in time to fondly remember. Most impressive in the August edition to me was the cover – a digital wash of the Porsches on the hill with tents and people in the background – really nice and highly memorable. And of course, there was the image of two members [identi-ties non-disclosed to protect the innocent…] hoisting a packed cooler of adult beverages and enhancing the club’s ‘other’ manta of being ‘A drinking club with a car problem…’ Whatever the image, please keep them com-ing. It’s so cool to capture these life moments and share them with the club [and hopefully enticing ‘shy’ members to join in the fun!].

So after the PVGP, there were some awe-some August events to review. First was the monthly club meeting at the Zeilinski manor. These guys simply know how to host a party. We started out on their expansive

covered patio, cocktails and agendas in hand… But Mother Nature had other plans… We endured the initial storm but had to retreat when the drumming on the patio cover be-came too raucous for us to hear each other. Indoors then provided an elegant forum to conduct the balance of our club business. This ain’t Congress people… YOU are invit-ed. Nobody is NOT invited. Come out and participate!!! We had new members AND one person who is planning to buy a Porsche in attendance. The latter was likely checking us out to see if he wanted to play in our sand-box. Happily, this same person [we’ll call him ‘Jim’] also showed up at our Driver’s Educa-tion later in the month as a spectator and for dinner, so we obviously didn’t scare him off… Thanks to Sandy & Bill for a great venue. Our September meeting will happen on the 12th at Auto Palace – PLEASE come out as these guys are gracious hosts.

Our home track DE [Driver’s Education] event at Pitt Race was a singular undertak-ing. Jim & Kathy Stout, the track owners, are making the former BeaveRun into a land-mark facility. Thanks to the staff at PittRace [great South Track Tours!] and our own Track and Instructor cadre for making this event so memorable. I had the distinct privilege of in-structing long-time club member, Dave Her-genroeder in his first track experience. Side-bar Your Honor… Your first track experience is like your first date with a highly-sought-after-someone… Its results can change the direction of your life… I think Dave may now need to enter the ‘track-junkie’ program at Betty Ford… While our first couple sessions involved figuring out which way the track turned, our last couple sessions involved my hitting his dashboard urging “throttle, throt-tle, throttle!” Dave was able to manage the track with his Boxster and truly understand

what the German engineers wanted his car to do… Pretty sure he’ll be back. And I cannot forget to mention our event dinner, orches-trated by the lovely Melinda Clark [LMC]. 50+ people enjoyed a fine summer dinner after track events on Saturday evening. The penul-timate moment was the dessert competition. Many entrants went well above expectations both in presentation and taste! Kudos to Me-linda for serving up such a fine event.

Other notable events in August included the Wine & Shine at Thistlewaite Vinyards, where we proved that fine wine and Porsches are a perfect combination for raising funds and materials to support the UPMC Child Advoca-cy Back to School program. The AutoCross at the Greensburg Airport followed immediately by the Sushi & Speed event at Robokyo was a big hit for all attendees. Our AutoX team is eager for you to come out and feel [that’s right ‘feel’] what your car can do. There are instructors. There are other AutoXers who will be happy to help you. The only poten-tial damage that can occur is to the orange cones… Your car will be fine [that is until you start down the dark path of performance en-

hancements…]. And I have to tell you that I’ve not seen one person consume so much raw fish as our own Scott Mores…

September is no less exciting as our previ-ous months! Again, our business meeting will happen at Auto Palace on the second Thursday of the month. BE THERE! We have a NEW event that will benefit Make-A-Wish at Rivertowne Brewing in Monroeville on 9.15 from 1p – 4p. The Porsche-Only park-ing will provide ‘EYE-CANDY’ and there will be lots of great festivities benefiting the charity. BE THERE! Our last Driver’s Educa-tion of the season will happen at the storied Mid-Ohio track on 9.20 – 9.22. BE THERE! Our AutoCross #4 will happen on the 29th at PittRace. BE THERE!

So many events. So many good times to happen. I hope to see you there. It truly is a great club that we have. Please engage in it and come out to play. Thanks for all who make our club great & GUTE FAHRT!!!

Hard to imagine but here we are… Sep-tem-ber. Where did summer go? Seems like yesterday we broke our vehicles out from hibernation. Do not despair though as there are still many events to go this month and next. With any luck we may even have an impromptu event or two in Nov should Mother Nature cooperate (after what seemed to be a rather wet summer – at least every 5+ hour road trip in my Porsche was… see they do not melt in the rain).

In any event your club leadership is in full swing planning the ARPCA 2014 calendar and now is your opportunity to provide input. Take a look back at all the events you attended (or wanted to) in 2013 since the snowy February mid-winter party at Sewickley Car Store. Give us YOUR feedback on each and general comments so we can better plan a fun filled 2014:• Were there enough events on the calendar

or too many?• What was your favorite event of 2013?• How could we make that particular event

better in 2014?

• Which events would you like to see more of (AX, DE, Tour, Rally, Social)?

• Any suggested charities to tie in with for 2014?

• What event(s) could or should be added / eliminated?

• Do we spread the events around enough geographically?

Your input is invaluable so please email your thoughts right away to: [email protected] or [email protected] .

Better yet, join us at an upcoming business meeting and share them in person - locations/times/directions are posted on arpca.com. Want to get even more involved? Very soon we will be holding our officer elections for 2014 – consider running for a position or volunteer to be or assist a committee chair. Our club runs on 100% on volunteers generous with their personal time and we can also use more help. Now is your opportunity to drive or at least ride shotgun.

Let’s go Bucs!!WOW This season is really going great for our

other hometown team. Let’s hope for the best in September!!

Back to Porsches….. Fast Frank has put to-gether what promises to be another great drive thru southwestern PA on October 12, 2013. Be sure to see the advertisement in this issue.

The Rally will begin at the old Star theatre in Bridgeville at the Rt. 50 Exit from both N & S on I-79 (Bridgeville Exit) Be there about 9:30 for first car off at 10:00. Lunch will be “On Your Own” at one of our favorite spots.

There may even be a Z4 on this trip. My younger brother purchased a 2008 Z recently and wants to come and play with us here in Pittsburgh. I told him we sometimes allow other marques to come along, but maybe he’ll have to “Bring up the rear”.

Rob and Paul continue to do a great job put-ting the Rundschau together, with the help of George and of course Scott. It’s a real Team Effort, and all of you can be part of the team.

Please send any pictures, stories, or just a note on how you think the Club is doing to us and we’ll publish it. That is, of course if it’s “publish-able”.

Thanks again, Keep those cards and letters coming.Forth Gear, Fifth Gear, I’m ‘outta here.Iron Jack

Fall is getting closer….Here are a couple of up-dates:1. 2013 ARPCA Golf Outing

The Golf Outing was cancelled this year due to a lack of attendees. I am tentatively planning a 2014 version – to all who are interested, can you send me an email with your “ideal” golf outing requirements? I would love to hear your feedback – please send responses to the email below.

2. As ARPCA Members, can you help us get more advertising? Do you know some-one who would want to advertise in our newsletter and on our website? WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH ADVERTISERS!

For those of you thinking about it or think you know someone who would be interested in advertising / supporting this publication, we have added a block in the publication

with the current rates and contact information. The rates are very reasonable for the publica-tion demographics. In addition, if you are an ARPCA member, you also qualify for special pricing.

For those who support the Rundschau through advertising, we certainly appreciate it. Your support helps keep this publication go-ing.

Remember, we have a new item for the Rund-schau – an Advertiser’s Spotlight section. Our advertisers count on you to use their services – here is another way you can get to know our advertisers. Each month, we will showcase one of our advertisers – I think you will find this in-formative and helpful.

If you have any comments, potential advertis-ers, or suggestions, please send these to me: [email protected]

Talk to An Expert

PittRace DE by Tim Hronek, ARPCA Co-Track Chair

ARPCA’s track team was “signed-off” at PittRace and completed our first “solo” event. The new team was able to “grid” 87 cars with no reportable incidents and only a snapped sway bar, worn brakes, some pride left at the “kink” and a few hundred dollars of tire “mar-bles” deposited on the track. One participant described the weather as “stellar”…. Oops, us-ing too much lingo again… based on feed-back from the event surveys we need to con-trol the lingo. This is the type of constructive feedback that helps the track team improve the Drivers Education events. We appreciate the feedback on the surveys, which helps us create events our fellow club members want to attend. We awarded our $25.00 credit to car C-16, and thank all who participated and sup-ported.

Suggestions from students included adding more time between the track and the class-room sessions to allow people to debrief with instructors, and park. There were a few com-ments about the amount of information pre-sented and the level of technical granularity, but overall most thought that the classroom sessions were excellent.

The Vehicle Dynamics Area (VDA) and car control drills are a unique addition to the student’s learning ex-perience that is not possible at other locations. A few comments included, “the VDA was great and much better than other DE’s”. A few more advanced students were jealous of the “D” Group students (Beginners and Novices) and took advantage of some skid pad time on Sat-urday.

There were many comments about the event schedule concerning the length of the driving sessions. The session times were selected to maximize the amount of time the drivers had on the track, but may have been a little too long for many student drivers. (Don’t think driving is tiring? Come and find out how fa-tiguing performance driving can be.) Howev-er, some adjustments to the schedule will be made for our next event - Mid-Ohio on Sep-tember 20-22.

The majority of the positive comments in-cluded kudos to our track and classroom In-structors. Great instructors make the event possible. “PCA instructors ..are why I keep coming back”.

Speed and Sushi - Greensburg Jeanette Airport AX and Robokyoby Rob Hoffman, photos by Don Baker and Cindy Monyok

If you missed the autocross at the Greensburg Jeanette Regional Airport you simply missed the best ARPCA Autocross course and event to date.

Trevor Hill and Scott Mores wowed the par-ticpants at this AX with a highly technical, fast course consisting of two slaloms, a chicago box, a wicked turnaround and more sweeps than Hoover. Each driver had a mind numbing 8 runs on a course that lasted over a minute per run. Grins could be seen from every participant

throughout the day. A few novice folks found it difficult to stay on course but with the help of other drivers or instructors everyone posted a complete time throughout the day.

As usual Trevor Hill came in first with Steel Cit-

ies SCCA cohort Chris Carslisle (who we need to adopt in to the ARPCA, even though he drives a Honda) in Second by only 3 tenths. West Virginia resident David Payne in his 997 Turbo brought in third, and Mr. S’mores with his inflatable friend finished 4th overall. Yours truly finally had the chance to run my own P-Car. I finished in the middle of the heap finally having the opportu-nity to learn my own car versus co-driving some-one else’s car... As our VP Ishler put it “Congrats on the almost 18 month journey to finally getting your car to an ARPCA AX event!” A new set of tires should help to bring the numbers back to re-spectable times at the next AX.

With the help of all Autocross participatnts,

cleanup was extremely fast and we were ready to head to Robokyo. A little over half of the 27 participants met up with the rest of the ARPCA at Robokyo to enjoy drinks, live music, fantas-tic sushi and Asian cuisine. A big thanks to Paul Nickoloff for coordinating the “Sushi” part of the day.

If you haven’t yet made it out to an AX, do you-self a favor and attend one. They are great fun, you get to go fast, yet the likelyhood of anything happening to your car is very slim.

There are two left this year. September 29th at PittRace with and hosted by the SCCA and Octo-ber 19 at Consol in Washington PA for Fall Fest. Register today at arpca.com.

The P3 program continues to connect with friends and family of ARPCA members serving our country overseas! We have recently sent a care package of snacks and other goodies to an Army Sergeant serving in Kuwait who is a friend of club member Dan Franzetta.

The P3 program is always looking for ad-ditional contacts – the process is very easy, and we would like to continue to expand our reach. If you have a family member, friend or relative serving in the Armed Forces, please let us know! We can connect with them and get them items to thank them for their service and remind them of home. Please help us share the generosity of fellow club members and bright-en the day of a soldier at the same time.

All you need to do is give us the name and email of the individual – we do the rest!! Please contact Michael Coyne at (724)601-7848 or [email protected] for more details.

Below is a quick thank you note received:

Checkered Flag Dinner Photos by Melinda Clark

A hot summer weekend, a track, P-Cars doing laps, food, beverages and friendship. Nothing says ARPCA quite like a DE at PittRace.

After a very beautiful Saturday at the track Melinda Clark organized dinner for the partici-pants of the PittRace DE and also invited the rest of the club to be social and see what DE’s are all about.

For Dinner there was stuffed chicken, pulled pork, beans, veggies and of course dessert! Aside from the driving, dessert was the best part of the night. Both ladies and gents partici-pated in a dessert contest that included deca-dent treats like S’mores, Tiramisu, Apple Cake, Blueberry Crumble Cake, and many more ways to make a track suit just a bit more snug.

Here are the results for the Dessert Contest at the “Checkered Flag Dinner” • 1st prize - Marla Zerrer for her Porsche

logo Tiramisu won $50 to the goodie store.

• 2nd prize- Diane Roach for her Blueberry Buckle with homemade vanilla cream and Blueberry pound cake with home-made cream & lemon zest won $20 to the goodie store.

• 3rd prize - (tie)Rob Kaminski for the elabo-rate and colorful Porsche logo and flags cake AND Bob Briggs for his Allegheny region logo Tiramisu. Each of them won $10 gift certificate at the goodie store.

Thanks to all who participated in the con-test, came out to the track for dinner, and the DE students that hung around for dinner. The weekend was fabulous and the ARPCA Track Team did a great job putting together such a wonderful weekend event. We hope to see you next year!

Washer? What Washer . . . We Don’t Need No Stinking Washer!! Part 2 - by Tom Hopey

There’s an old adage, “It’s easier to ask for for-giveness than it is to ask for permission.” That may be true if you’re sneaking an extra dough-nut at a meeting where everyone knows there’s only going to be twelve people attending, but when my son Jason and I wanted to buy a clas-sic Porsche 944 as his first car, and really didn’t have anywhere to hide it, plus the missing money “might” be noticed rather quickly, we actually went to my wife and asked for permis-sion. The shocker was, she said “Yes”- although she did add a few stipulations. There was no way it was going to turn into a project (no room in the garage), it had to be inspected, and it had to be useable as a daily driver from day one. She’s tough!

We said “OK”, hoping we could meet budget (4k) and still find a decent car worth owning. I started looking in the papers, while Jason looked online. This turned into a labor of love, as most of the cars we found were in sad con-dition; ranging from stored outside, no current inspection, body work needed, won’t start, poorly put-together after a wreck, and some that were just not maintained well at all. I really feel bad for the old Porsches out there when the owner moves on to something else and ig-nores the car’s care – they can go downhill in a few short months – especially in winter. I’m an ex-service manager, so I set the standards pret-ty high. Many times we would be leaving from seeing a car and Jason was growing impatient, saying “Dad, that’s as good as we’ve seen; let’s make him an offer.” or “I don’t think we’re going to find anything better.”

I just kept reassuring him, “Be patient, we will find a car that the guy took care of, maintained it, but just doesn’t like it any longer. You have to do a lot of looking before you buy . . . we’ll know the right car when we see it – I promise.”

For those of you who have never gone on a search-quest, it does take real patience, and we went months before we closed in on a nice car. I would stay up late at night looking mostly on Ebay and Craigslist, checking every detail and

picture. Finally, sometime around October, with his graduation money from June burning a hole in his pocket, we found two very strong candidates on CL. One for $4300 that “was well maintained, but may need a clutch soon.” An-other that was in good condition, but had “high miles”; and it had an asking price of 5K, which was way over budget. I’m an optimist - we went to see both.

The first car was nice, and Jason was very sure that this was “the one”, and wanted very badly to make an offer. I almost agreed with him, but the 125k miles scared me; if the clutch was original, I wasn’t so sure I wanted to do that amount of work in the near future; remember we promised KK no major work, and ready to drive – she scared me more than the possible work! We passed . . .

So, on to Door No. 2 . . . we were getting pret-ty dejected. Jason was depressed and didn’t even want to go look at the latest car. He was sure the guy would never come down to 4k. He was also learning from all of the other cars we’d looked at - people sometimes don’t care about their car once the condition or value had gone down so low. He decided he wasn’t interested in some of the cars in the price range we were in, and was about to call it quits. Who could blame him? I tried to keep his spirits up, and luckily the car was only about 5 miles from our house. All the while I’m thinking, “the one with high miles”; I wasn’t sure I wanted to look either. But, I was trying to teach him that it’s a process, and you never know what you’re going to find, so I tried to keep an upbeat attitude.

Meanwhile, Kimberly saw us loosing momen-tum, and kept her fingers crossed . . . you know, like they do in the movies . . . with the vampires . . . using both index fingers.

One of the great lessons you learn when you search for a special car is that some-where out there is probably the car that meets your de-sires. It may take you a while to find it, but don’t give up! Keep a fresh attitude, and be ready to act decisively when you find it. It’s easy to give

Page 23: September 2013 - ARPCAarpca.com › files › documents › rundschau › 2013 › Rundschau... · ramblings, graphics, and photos. Please send submissions via mail or email to the

up, and it’s even easier to not be as critical with the last car as you may have been with the first – remain consistent and set a quality level that you expect – don’t accept something that’s close; wait for the car! Remember, you’re going to be the one driving it.

Perseverance has its own reward. Finding a “diamond in the rough”, means exactly that, it may be rough when you find it – so look past the dirt! As we drove up to the latest 944, it was obvious that it no longer lived in a heated ga-rage. In fact, the paint (the proper G. Red) was extremely faded, had months worth of leaves sticking around the wipers, and had not been waxed for a while (like years!). The inside was dirty and dusty, but had no rips or holes, and the carpeting was decent looking (nice mats). The wheels were dirty, but not “curb damaged”, and the tires were in good shape. I did my usual walk around, trying to see if body panels fit properly, checking paint for scrapes and rust, and generally looking for evidence of any acci-dents – I saw nothing; it looked original! Things were looking good. We popped the hood, and had a look at the engine – again, very dirty, but generally unmolested. (WOW. This really could be the one). Even the claim of “high miles” was only 93k – not bad for an ’88.

The owner (hereafter known as the Traitor) had purchased a new Mustang (see!), and the Porsche had lost the garage space 8 months ago. He liked the car, but he didn’t love it - any-more. The Traitor used to take care of it, but now he had the Mustang. Also, his knees were bad and the clutch was difficult to use, so he hadn’t driven it much (the last inspection stick-er was only 200 miles old). The kicker was, he owned it for 8 years, and put less than10k on it. He even had the timing belts replaced only 4k ago, and it had a current inspection sticker! All good signs for us, and my wife. Jason and I exchanged glances, and tried not to smile too much. We kept examining the car, and contin-ued to let the owner talk himself out of it – he (and his wife) wanted the car gone – the sooner the better. Which was better for us.

We went “All in!” at 4K. He thought that was too low, but being a Traitor to the brand, he took it; and smiled. Jason and I, feeling like pi-rates, handed him a bunch of hundred dollar

bills (40 of them to be exact), took our receipt, and drove home . . . and smiled.

When you see someone you haven’t seen for a while (in Pittsburgh, anyways), and ask “High ya’ doin’?”, you normally expect people to say, “U’m (for I’m) OK.” But every once in a while, some-one will be a smart-ass-show-off and say, “I’m great! Just livin’ the dream!” Now, we all know they’re lying! No one has it that good; and even if they did, who would have the tasteless, bad manners to go around bragging about it like that?

Well, that Saturday morning, Jason and I would. Over and over again. He was on Cloud 9 - the proverbial Kid in a Candy Store; he actu-ally owned a Porsche. I had had one of those intangible, priceless Father/Son moments, successfully showing him how to buy a used car; a Porsche, no less. Seriously, I felt like Cap-tain Jack Sparrow when he got the Black Pearl back. He was happy. I was happy. KK would be happy. Happy, happy, happy! Just like the mil-lionaires on Duck Dynasty! Both of us, just livin’ the dream!

There were hi-5’s all the way home. We had really found an original survivor. From what we could tell, it was in excellent condition, and needed nothing except extreme cleaning and waxing. We went home to break the good news to KK. I must say she took it well. Making sure we didn’t break any promises, she verified once again that it needed absolutely no work! I said, “Nope, it’s perfect.” And I really thought so.

Well, Friends, once again I think I need to take a break from this story. Yeah, I know, every-thing’s going so well, why take a break now? You still haven’t heard about that one lonely stupid washer, the timing belts, and me do-ing my own service work; and what it has to do with a Perfect Porsche 944 that already had the belts replaced only 4k ago? Is this story get-ting a bit boring; rather sedate? It would seem so . . . until you looked in the glove box . . . at the service records . . . and found out the belts indeed had been replaced . . . 6 years ago! -------- whatever you do, DON’T TELL KK-------- We’re Friends, remember?

And Porsche Friends don’t let Porsche Friends drive . . . with old timing belts.

Til next month....

The weather was perfect for a drive into the country... unfortunately the roads were not as cooperative. Despite many roadblocks, detours and water hazards (hopefully you got all the mud out of your car Jason) members arrived at Thistelthwaite Vinetayrds for a great day of spir-its and socializing. After sampling the vineyards fruit, ARPCA members headed to relax and listen to the tunes played by DJ Forman. Many stories, tales and Porsche memories were shared along with a glass or two of wine. It was great to see some new members (Jim and Marsha were so eager to be a part of the group they were first to arrive).

This event was also another great charitable event hosted by our club. Members provided monetary donations and school supplies to support the Children’s Hospital Child Advocacy Centers Back Pack Program. This program pro-vides back packs to disadvantaged youth help-ing them start off the school year successfully. Thanks to ARPCA members the center was able to fill forty (but this may change as I think we have some addl club funds) back packs to be distributed this year. APRCA would also like to thank Thistlethwaite Vineyards for the donation of the space, and likewise DJ Forman for the do-nation of his time. Your support helped to make our event a fun, enjoyable day.
