Message From Rabbi
Working Towards a Sweet New Year
There is a popular aphorism that I totally reject: "Everything happens for a reason." This
is usually said to people or by people who have experienced a loss that they don't under-
stand. It is their way of finding acceptance in the moment. I am glad it works for
them. For me, though, it is empty and borders on insulting. Thus, I flipped the saying on
its head: "We must find a reason for everything that happens." Sometimes there is no rea-
son to justify the losses we experience. In such situations we must create meaning through
the act of struggle itself. At times of loss, we usually do this with the support of our
friends and family. However, like Jacob's wrestling with the angel, at the core, this is a
solitary act. It is through the courageous reaffirming of life, especially when we are ready
to give up, that we sanctify it. We find meaning through the struggle itself. Jacob's name
was changed to Israel after his all night struggle. The explanation of the name Israel in the
Torah is, "For you have wrestled with God and human and were able." As the children of
Israel, we are called upon to be God-wrestlers and meaning-makers. We must take the
responsibility on our shoulders to find meaning in our lives, not passively accept things as
if it were God's decree.
As we begin another year, the tradition guides us to do this intensive work on ourselves
with courage and honesty. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur provide us with the familiar
structure and routines to chart how we have changed from year to year. The blasts of the
shofar announce that we have arrived at this sacred moment once again. We look inwards.
What were our accomplishments and what were our shortcomings? We look around at our
family and friends as we contemplate where we have come from and where we are go-
ing. What is our place in the passing of the generations? To what has my life
amounted? What gives me solace? What is most important in my life? What is in my
control upon which to improve? What is out of my control that I must accept?
Amidst all of this intense reflection we celebrate. We enjoy wonderful festive meals. We
eat apples and honey as we embrace the sweetness of the New Year. We extend this tradi-
tion by dipping our challah in honey throughout the entire month of Tishrei. Usually we
dip our challah in salt. As we go through this reflective process, though, we sweeten the
moment with honey. We face life optimistically. Even with all of our disappointments in
ourselves, others and the world, we affirm ourselves and reaffirm life as good, a precious
gift.
As we begin the New Year may we be renewed by the cycles developed by our ancestors
over the generations. May we bequeath these traditions to our children as they navigate
their own journeys, hoping that they find their own answers as they encounter the wisdom
of past ages. May we do the serious work of self-reflection which we are called on to
do. As we seek to reaffirm life's meaning this year, may we be nurtured and guided by the
traditions of the holidays as we immerse ourselves in the joys of celebrating with family
and friends. This is how we make meaning of our lives in the face of the mystery of our
existence.
Adina and I are honored to join with you in this process. We wish you a happy and sweet
new year!
Rabbi Ruven Barkan

A MessAge FroM our Presidents desk …………
This is the time of year that we think back to the past year and reflect on our successes and our
failures. I could go on and on about the synagogue’s accomplishments over the last year, but I
will spare you. This really is the time of year for us to reflect on what is really important in our
lives. A few weeks ago I attended my son’s induction into medical school. The White Coat Cere-
mony, as it is called, is a time honored tradition that puts in perspective the awesome responsibil-
ity that doctors have to heal humankind. As I listened to the speaker of the day I thought of our
synagogue, our Jewish community and how each and every one of us has a responsibility to each
other just as doctors do to their patients. I stood there proud of my son for his achievements and
for reaching this important milestone. I know he will work hard to succeed, to be the best doctor
that he can be. I hope that I can work as hard as he will to make our synagogue a Kehilla, a sa-
cred community. I know my son will get his work done, but I need your help to make our syna-
gogue the best that it can be. Sometimes I’m sure we think that this will get done and that will get
done by someone else, that this is the Rabbi’s responsibility or Motti’s job, but really we need
you to help.
As I listened further to the speaker at the White Coat Ceremony, he spoke about how this was
no ordinary day. That all the hard work of the past was important to get them to this day, but they
were on a new journey and that what was important was the future. Just as Rosh Hashanah is no
ordinary day for us as Jews, it can be and should be a new start, a new future. It is an opportunity
to say to ourselves, “I can make a difference in this world”. The speaker reminded us of how pre-
cious life is and to not waste one moment on inconsequential actions. Rosh Hashanah is that re-
minder that life is precious, an opportunity to start a new year. As I continued to listen to the
speaker, I thought back to all the good times and the tough times of raising our children and again
I was reminded that what was really important was the future. Each time I did think back I also
thought of all the wonderful possibilities that each day will bring. So I ask you to make the Agu-
dath Achim a part of your future, whether it is one day or 365 days. I know that if you take that
step in making the AA a part of your life it will be no ordinary day, no ordinary week, no ordinary
year and no ordinary future.

From the mind oF motti……….
In my shul in the old country, Israel not Poland, just before the first shofar blowing, the rabbi
would clap his hand on the Bima and quote Maimonodis, “Every person should see himself as
half guilty and half innocent; and all the world, too, as half guilty and half innocent. If he would
do one good deed, he would change his destiny and the destiny of the whole world for the better;
but if he does one bad deed he changes his destiny and the destiny of the whole world for the
worse.” And then the shofar would blow and I would be left with my thoughts. What a responsi-
bility? What a burden? Me, little Motti, standing here, with the destiny of the whole world de-
pendant on my behavior!
The concept of one person having the ability to change the world repeats itself in many Jewish
texts. One famous example is the saying, “Saving one soul is like saving the whole world, and
killing one person is like killing the whole world.”
Many times in our lives we look at reality and feel that we don’t have the power to make a
change because no one is listening, because we are tired, because it is not impacting us directly...
Traditionally Rosh Hashanah is seen as the day that our sins are forgiven. We ask for forgiveness
and start all over again, but maybe the idea of individual responsibility is another way to look at
Rosh Hashanah. Maybe Rosh Hashanah is our alarm clock, calling us to wake up, to get in-
volved, to say to ourselves, “I can make a difference. I can’t let others do all the work. I have to
find the time to make a difference, to make my life count.” Making a difference is not just a say-
ing, it is a command. Every day we say in Alenu, “to perfect the earth by your kingship.” If
every Jew who stands in shul on Rosh Hashanah takes upon himself one more good deed to do
next year, his life will be better, the community will be better, and the world will be better.
Now, what your good deed is going to be is for y’all to pick.
Shana Tova and see you in shul!

NEWS FROM SISTERHOOD …
Change is good, right?
This year for Sisterhood is all about change. We are in the midst of reorganizing the structure and
goals of Sisterhood as a viable part of Agudath Achim Congregation.
Whether we cling to the programs of the past or look at new ways of participating in synagogue
events, programs, and fundraising, it is time to discuss who we are and where we want to go. We
began the conversation at our open meeting in August and we will continue throughout the year
to define who we will be as a Sisterhood in the future. Will we change? If so, how much
change? What will we keep? What will be retired? These are not questions for just a few board
members--this will affect all members, and it is important that your voice be heard. I certainly
don’t have the single answer for what is best for Sisterhood, but I think taking the time for discus-
sion will provide a direction that will help us make Sisterhood a good fit in the lifestyle of all
members to meet the educational, spiritual, and social needs of our members.
You have opinions--that’s good and we want to hear them. But, along with your opinion, we
need your commitment to put the changes in place. So, not only are we listening to what you
want, we are going to ask you what you will do. Whether we stay the same, make little changes
or big changes, nothing will happen without your commitment and participation. You don’t have
to wait to be asked--if you have ideas and you are willing to make your ideas work for the benefit
of Sisterhood and synagogue, then you have our full attention.
Join us in this very important discussion. If you want to host a discussion, let me know. Whether
we meet in small groups or large meetings, the time is now to talk to one another and let our ideas
grow and build a new, improved Sisterhood of Agudath Achim Congregation. To me, change is
good!

Informative News from the Men’s Club:
Men’s Club Summer 2013
Life goes on and one of our active members, Meir Elfassy, is recovering from surgery at his home base
in Canada. Meir's situation reminds me of the thought that "Life gets in the way of plans." So perhaps
should any of us want to do something, whether Men's Club, Sisterhood, Minyan, or Synagogue atten-
dance, perhaps do those things rather than putting them off. Meir and Alice, in their six months with us
had become good friends to many of us. Let us think many positive thoughts.
Now, over 40 of us attended the Pizza/Spaghetti dinner (with many happy children). Watching Master
Pizza Chef Steve Sacks was a lesson in quality! Motti is a master shopper and helped me immensely.
Joanna, of course, is AAS kitchen wise! David Hirsh managed the kitchen well!!!
So, for your continuing consideration, the last Sunday of each month there will be Sunday Minyan and
the Men’s Club/Sisterhood breakfast. While small but growing numbers attend, a meaningful and good
time is had by all.
In October we will have an evening dinner event with an important speaker discussing something of in-
terest, please let both Joanna Rich and me know of your interests.
Hanukah is near and we will have the Ernie Friedman big event with many of us needed to prepare,
serve, and of course clean.
So, for those interested in participating, as one person or as couples, please attend events and call or
email with any suggestions. This coming year there will be Sisterhood and Men’s Club elections, and
we invite you to participate in those as well!
I wish you a Happy and Healthy New Year,
Bob Schwartz, for the Men’s Club
897-4743, [email protected]
We have had several Sunday after Minyan Breakfasts with 20 plus
congregants attending each. We have a breakfast planned, after Minyan,
Sunday, September 29th with AJ Haysman, Jack Wolf and Joanna Rich and I cooking
something delicious and new for you. Cost is $6.00 for adults and $3.00
for children. Please e-mail me, Bob Schwartz, for reservations,

DECISIONS
Decisions, decisions, decisions. All our lives we have to make too many decisions.
When to go to sleep, what time to wake up, when to eat, what to eat, do I have to go
to work, do I stop for gas, whom should I take for lunch, will I exercise today, are we
going out for dinner or eating at home, where to go on vacation, what school do we
send our children to, whether to attend shabbat services, how much to donate to dif-
ferent organizations, and there are thousands of other decisions we make in our eve-
ryday lives without even realizing a decision is being made.
One of the hardest decisions we have to make is where will my family and I be bur-
ied at the end of our lives. Regardless of your adult age this decision must and
should be made as soon as possible. Especially if you wish a shady spot, or next to a
loved one, or as far away from someone you don’t care for, or a twelve lot plot
( which are very few), or to save a few bucks as every year the lots keep increasing
in price.
Think about this decision and if you want to eliminate this decision from your “to
do” list call the synagogue and ask for the shul’s cemetery real-estate department and
you will be given the number of Larry Lasky or David Reeves. But please do not
share this info with anyone else as they have no real-estate license.
THANKS FOR READING.
Larry Lasky
We are very grateful to Jesse Saures for making a generous contribution to our
synagogue by donating the services of his company,
Family Lawn Care, to care for the grounds of our
synagogue on a regular basis.
You can reach Family Lawn Care at 912-655-1529.

Operation Isaiah
This is my chosen fast…share your bread with the hungry, take the home-
less into your home, clothed the naked when you see him, do not turn
away from the people in need. (Isaiah 58:6-7) Wednesday, September 4th
begins the celebration of the Jewish Holidays. This is also the start of the
annual food drive, Operation Isaiah. We ask each congregant to bring a
minimum of one pound of food to the synagogue for distribution to the
hungry through the
Second Harvest Food Bank. With 100% participation, we would together,
as an act of Tzedekah, give no less than 600lbs of food to feed those less
fortunate. Drop off barrels will be located in Congregation Agudath
Achim, along with 4 other locations
(The JEA, Congregation Mickve Israel,
Congregation B’nai Birth Jacob and Rambam Day School).
