Who would you like to have serving as Elders for the next three years? “Choose from among you those who are full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom…” (Acts 6:3) The Nominating Committee for the church’s elders was chosen at the August 19 Session meeting: Rod Wolfe, chair, Marshall Duncan, Jennifer Ellis, Barbara Grigsby, Sarah Hedstrom, and Elaine Price. I will also be meeting with the committee as pastoral advisor. We will begin meeting on the 2 nd week of September to recruit 8 elders and 1 youth elder, to be recommended to the Congregation at the election meeting October 28. They will also be responsible for recommending an additional member to serve on the Professional Staff Committee. Our Nominating Committee will need your help. Please prayerfully consider who might be good leaders for our church at this important time. The Book of Acts identifies two qualities that would be crucial: “…full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom.” Our Presbyterian New Form of Government adds “Elders should be persons of faith, dedication, and good judgment. Their manner of life should be a demonstration of the Christian gospel, both within the church and in the world.” Our own church’s guidelines, as approved by Session last month, add the following expectations: *attendance at the election meeting of the congregation October 28; *participation in two training sessions, the 2nd & 3rd Sundays of November; *attendance at Installation Sunday, the first Sunday of January; *participation at all Session meetings, the 3 rd Sunday of each month at 6:00, unless excused by the pastor; *leadership on one of the committees (Christian Education, Communications, Congregational Care, Fellowship, Finance & Stewardship, Property, Service, Historic Preservation, Mission & Outreach, Professional Staff, Worship). *regular worship attendance *a plan for growing in Biblical knowledge and spiritual insight; *making a financial pledge to the church. Before emailing or mailing your recommendations to chairperson Rod Wolfe, please ask their permission to submit their name. Persons who feel called to serve in this capacity may also nominate themselves. It would be most helpful to get your nominations to Rod by September 9 ([email protected] or in a sealed envelope at the church office). (continued on page 3) September 2012

Who would you like to have serving as Elders for the next three years?

“Choose from among you those who are full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom…” (Acts 6:3)

The Nominating Committee for the church’s elders was chosen at the August 19

Session meeting: Rod Wolfe, chair, Marshall Duncan, Jennifer Ellis, Barbara Grigsby,

Sarah Hedstrom, and Elaine Price. I will also be meeting with

the committee as pastoral advisor. We will begin meeting on the

week of September to recruit 8 elders and 1 youth elder, to be

recommended to the Congregation at the election meeting

October 28. They will also be responsible for recommending an

additional member to serve on the Professional Staff Committee.

Our Nominating Committee will need your help. Please

prayerfully consider who might be good leaders for our church

at this important time. The Book of Acts identifies two qualities

that would be crucial: “…full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom.” Our

Presbyterian New Form of Government adds “Elders should be persons of faith,

dedication, and good judgment. Their manner of life should be a demonstration of the

Christian gospel, both within the church and in the world.” Our own church’s guidelines,

as approved by Session last month, add the following expectations:

*attendance at the election meeting of the congregation October 28;

*participation in two training sessions, the 2nd & 3rd Sundays of November;

*attendance at Installation Sunday, the first Sunday of January;

*participation at all Session meetings, the 3rd

Sunday of each month at 6:00, unless

excused by the pastor;

*leadership on one of the committees (Christian Education, Communications,

Congregational Care, Fellowship, Finance & Stewardship, Property, Service,

Historic Preservation, Mission & Outreach, Professional Staff, Worship).

*regular worship attendance

*a plan for growing in Biblical knowledge and spiritual insight;

*making a financial pledge to the church.

Before emailing or mailing your recommendations to chairperson Rod Wolfe, please

ask their permission to submit their name. Persons who feel called to serve in this

capacity may also nominate themselves. It would be most helpful to get your

nominations to Rod by September 9 ([email protected] or in a sealed envelope at the

tory overview of the purpose of Confirmation, to “make disciples of Jesus Christ.”

The purpose of this Note Sheet is to give the congregation information on items discussed and/or decided at the latest

Session meeting.

The Session opened with the lighting of the Christ Candle and a responsive reading. Chip Connell gave the

opening reflection and prayer. His scripture was Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 which begins, “For everything there is a

season…..” This passage has personal meaning to Chip as it seems to mirror events in his life. It also seemed to

be a “God Moment” in that, coincidentally, it was also used in church service today and had appeared in the

newspaper this week. Chip also read a piece which illustrated that attitude is everything in life.

Christian Education – Sunday School classes are in good shape for this fall.

Communication – There will be a link from the church’s web site to the church’s Facebook account. Advent

Books will be begun soon.

Congregational Life – September 9th

the Second Sunday lunch will be the picnic at the Hudson Farm.

Finance and Stewardship – There is a $48,000 difference, to the negative, between pledges of 2011 and 2012.

Information about this situation will be placed in the bulletin and the newsletter.

Local Witness – A reliable company to do a church directory for us at no cost has been interviewed. Pending the

receipt of positive references, the Session gave approval to move ahead. A request for $500 was made for the Trunk

or Treat and carnival on October 28. This will be taken from the AOC budget as in the past. The committee will

change their name to Congregational Care Committee.

Pastor Nominating Committee – To date, 93 applications have been received. The committee is having their first

face to face visit with a candidate Aug. 24-26.

Presbyterian Women – Request to use the Joy Offering to help fund FUEL was presented for 1st

reading. A

decision will be made at the September 16 meeting.

Professional Staff – “Respective Roles of Professional Staff Committee, Congregation, and Session in Assessing

Pastor’s Performance” document was presented for 1st

reading. Suggestions for editing were asked from elders prior

to next Session meeting on September 16.

Property – Repairs have been made to the steeple, plaster repairs will be made, and various other repairs will be

addressed as funding allows.

Worship – Infant baptism of Rhodes Walton will take place Sept. 2, 2012. Finance and Worship Committees, and

Wednesday Night Worship Service Core Team, all met to discuss ideas, funding, and logistics of a Wednesday Night

Service. Funding ideas are still being explored.

New Business – The document “Process for Caring for Inactive Members” was presented for the first reading. A

revised document to be voted on at the next Session meeting on September 16.

Nominating Committee for Elders was approved: Rod Wolfe (chair), Jennifer Ellis, Sarah Hedstrom, Marshall

Duncan, Barbara Grigsby, and Elaine Price. Pastor Dave will be at meetings as advisor.

Nominating Committee Guidelines were presented and approved as revised.

The meeting closed with extinguishing the Christ Candle and a responsive benediction.

~THANK YOU’s ~

We wish to say a special “Thank You” to David Midlick and Tracy Jackson for the months of

work they took in building and installing a new wooden cabinet in the church office workroom.

The cabinet looks very professional and helps make the room much tidier.

Letter from the Coffman’s

Dear Pastor Dave and members of the First Presbyterian Church:

I have been trying to come up with some fancy words to tell you how much Bonnie and I

appreciate your love, help and TLC during our bout with some health problems.

I haven’t been able to come up with anything better than the old fashioned way. So from the

bottom of our hearts we THANK YOU...thank you and love you. God called on you and boy,

you really answered! We hated to move but it seemed like the right thing to do, being close to

kids and grandkids we are getting settled in and things are better.

We will never forget you. We put a high value on your love and friendship.

God Bless You!

Tom & Bonnie Coffman

P.S. David, Carol, Mathew, and Sandy have been great to us.

~ADVENT CRAFT FAIR ~

The Advent Craft Fair is planned for Dec. 2. If you would like to lead a craft or if you would

like to sign up to donate baked items, please contact Heather Thurman, fair director, at

[email protected] or the church office. Thanks to the generosity of many sponsors,

craft supplies will be available to all children at no cost. Heather plans to offer at least two adult

crafts. Please put Dec. 2 on your calendar and plan to attend the afternoon of fun, food, fellowship,

and crafts in the fellowship hall.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

UPDATE FOR THE PNC, SEPTEMBER 2012

This past weekend you may have heard the PNC had a pastor and his wife visit our community. We

are happy to report that the visit went very well and they were so impressed with our church and the

work that is done here. The pastor and his wife loved our facility and how we have so much

opportunity because of our nice buildings. They were equally impressed with the southern

hospitality and type of congregation we told them about. We were very open with him about our

good and “not so good” issues we have to address as a congregation.

Before you start thinking we have found our pastor, we want to caution you. The PNC meets this

week again to strategize our next step. We want to make sure we have carefully reviewed all of our

100 Pastor Information Forms, (PIF) interviews, and sermons before we make further plans. Some of

those 100 we may need to still interview. A selected few may need to come for visits. Our

responsibility is to be thorough and know that we have done the best job we can. So please be patient

and keep praying for us to have wisdom and direction from God.

Respectfully Submitted

SUPPORT FOR THE F.U.E.L. PROGRAM!

This church has supported the FUEL program for the past several years. The program provides food

every Friday, during the school year, for children in our public schools to take home for the

weekend. The children receiving the food do not have enough at home. Our church's work helps

support children at Byrns Darden Elementary. These children desperately need our help! In response

to the urgent request for the summer program, a total of $1835 was donated. We will need about

$3000 for the new school year, so we will ask for your help again in the future. Thank You!

regularly re-charge the card using cash, check, or credit card and then use it at any Kroger, anytime, and

Kroger sends the church 4%. The more you re-charge the card, the more Kroger donates to our youth!

To date we have received $6,796.65 from Kroger through your purchases. Cards are available only in the

church office.

designated parking spots are the 36 closest to Main Street. Hang tags are available in the church office at

no cost to you.

~WHAT’S NEW WITH CHILDREN’S CHURCH ~

This Sunday School year, our children are experiencing a new type of Children’s Church. The

Christian Education Committee began using a new curriculum that altered the form of Children’s

Church to a more structured worship format. Following the Children’s Moment during the 11:00

service, children ages 4 – 4th

grade are invited to come to the chapel for Children’s Worship. The Noah’s

Park curriculum (designed for this age group to teach Biblical lessons incorporating skits, music, prayer

and discussion in the worship) will help prepare children to fully participate in worship once they are

older. This is an exciting time and we appreciate your prayers for God’s blessing on this new service.
