THE MINISTER

Dear Friends,

As I sit to write this column we are coming to the end of London 2012,the Summer Olympics. What a few weeks it has been! From the amazingopening ceremony to the incredible performance of Team GB it has beena fortnight to remember for so many reasons.

One of the memorable features for me has been the focus on the parentsof the participants. It began for me with Chad le Clos’ father being hastilyinvited along to the media point and then being entertained by his veryAfrikaans South African response! I think if I hear the words ‘brilliant’ or‘amazing’ again in the too near future I might scream, but what a proudDad! Then there was the naughty cameraman who focussed on Sir ChrisHoy’s parents in his Gold Medal effort in the Men’s Keirin. His Mum’santics were priceless – I can’t look, I must look, no I can’t look, yes I mustlook!! And then there is the incredible story of Charlotte Dujardin andthe sacrifices made by her Mum to give her the opportunity to realiseher potential and her dream to attain her Gold Medal in the IndividualDressage event. These are but a few, I know, but as I think on them andthe many others, it makes me think about another parent, one whowould dearly love to see their children realise their potential and go onto be all that they can be and more.

This parent too has given gifts and made sacrifices, some might say theultimate sacrifice, in order that their children might realise their goal, tobe one with each other and one with our parent, our creator, our God.Perhaps we have not yet fully appreciated what it is we have been given.Maybe we’re still confused into thinking it is something we have to strivefor, perhaps at the expense of others. Or maybe it just sounds too goodto be true but here it is: “This is how much God loved the world: He gavehis Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need bedestroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.”(John 3:16 The Message)

BRIAN BAMFORD

On Monday 9 August we were all totally in shock when we heard thatour Assistant Caretaker, Brian, had died while working in Central. It camewithout any warning.

Brian was born in Swindon, and met Mary whilst working at the Willsfactory. Apparently Mary wasn’t too sure about his appearance at thattime – long curly hair and drainpipe trousers! After a meeting at a dance,Mary said she could ‘never get rid of him.’

Very much a family man, Brian was so proud of Mary (particularly whenshe passed exams connected with her work), his son Andy when hepassed out for the RAF, and when he walked his two daughters (Leslie &Sarah) down the aisle on their weddings. He loved being a grandfatherto Nathan, Jack and Charlie.

It was work that brought Brian & Mary to Torquay, where they ran a pubuntil the girls were born. Brian worked variously in a factory, as a serviceengineer, a delivery driver, and of course at Central (for 12 years) andFactory Row. When not at home with Mary, he could be found on thegolf course!

We all knew him as a quiet man, who responded willingly to all requestsmade upon him, with good humour and no fuss. He will be sorely missed.

GRAHAM PAXTON

In June we reported that Graham Paxton, a long-time member of Centralhad died. The Church has now received a note from Andy Lyle asking thata letter Graham wrote to us, be included in our magazine – so here it is.Andy also thanked all at Central for their care and prayers for Graham.

“Greetings to my friends at Torquay Central Church who remember me.For sometime now I have been unable to attend due to excessivebreathlessness, due to Heart & Lung problems. I have now had a furtherproblem caused by collapsing, which means I can no longer live atLammas Lane Paignton, and Have been told at aged 84 I need to spendthe rest of my life in a Nursing Home.

After a period in Torbay & Brixham Hospitals and a period in a PaigntonNursing Home, I have decided to accept an invitation to reside at Room18 Pendruccombe House Nursing Home, Tavistock Road LauncestonCornwall PL15 9HF. My direct phone number is 01566 779286.

This property is two doors away from where my friend Jean Lyle lives. Ihave known Jean since we were teenagers at Market St MethodistChurch. Latterly Jean and her late husband were also members of Centraland Jean was leader of the Women’s Fellowship.

Jean’s son Andrew Lyle (01566 779123) is making an excellent job oflooking after my affairs, as well as acting for me as my Lasting Power ofAttorney, with support from his wife Beverly.

So this is farewell to Central, I will be pleased if any of you would like tocontact me either by prior appointment or by phoning me.

With Best Wishes and Farewell for now Graham.”

A SERVICE OF DEVOTION & DEDICATIONMarjorie West

The Print Room will shortly receive an attachment which will both foldand staple. This means that in future, the Magazine will be completedin one cycle viz. printed, folded, and stapled. The result is that MarjorieWest, after about FIFTY YEARS of Devoted Service will no longer berequired to hand fold and staple the Magazines at her home.

I wish to record on behalf of the Membership of Central Church a veryhuge ‘THANK YOU’ for her countless hours spent, month after month, uncomplaining, providing a first class service to the readers of EnquireWithin.

She has without doubt, been one of the Church’s unsung heroines whogo about their tasks to the benefit of all. How fortunate the Church is tohave such people. Marjorie, YOU DESERVE a rest from your labours.Thank you once again.

John Lawrence

THE EDITOR REQUESTS......

I have noted over recent months, less and less material for Enquire Withincoming from our membership. FROM PROPERTY & FINANCE

We are aware that many people are working year by year to raise moneyfor the church in many different ways and we are very grateful to youall.

Two projects are coming to fruition for which we feel a special ‘thankyou’ is warranted.

The refurbishment of the minister’s vestry is now complete. SheilaLawrence and Barbara Gissinger raised £500 with a table top sale backin December last year and we are very grateful for that effort.

The new sanctuary carpet is now on order. Thank you to The Guild forreleasing £2,000 from their Hobbs Legacy fund. This, together with anumber of private donations for which we are also very grateful, meansthat we now have the funds necessary to do this work.

Paul Sherriff – Chair of Property & Finance

WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP

Around twenty members attended our Annual General Meeting on the13 August. A report on the year 2011/2012 was presented anddiscussion took place on certain issues. The Treasurer’s report wasreceived, and although income was slightly down due mainly to Speakers’expenses, it was unanimously agreed to donate £800 to the Churchtowards the use of the hall and kitchen for our meetings.

THE LESSONS MY MOTHER TAUGHT ME.

Day by day, mothers teach children the lessons of life, in whatthey say . Here’s how:-

1. To appreciate a job well done – “if you two brothersare going to kill one another, do it outside. I just fin-ished cleaning.”

2. Religion – “you’d better pray that mess will come outof the carpet.”

3. Anticipation – “Just you wait until we get home.”4. Medical Science – “If you don’t stop crossing your

eyes, they’re going to stay that way.”5. Logic – “Because I said so.”6. Foresight – “Make sure you wear clean underwear, in

case you’re in an accident.”7. Contortionism – “Will you look at that dirt on the back

of your neck.”8. Stamina – “You’ll sit there until all the spinach is eaten

up.”9. ESP – “Put that sweater on. Don’t you think I know

when you’re cold.”10. Justice – “One day you’ll have kids, and I hope they

turn out just like you!”

Postal Services

There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an oldfamily Bible to her brother in another part of the country.“Is there anything breakable in here?” asked the postalclerk. “Only the Ten Commandments” answered the lady.

HARVEST FESTIVAL Sunday 23rd September 2012

It is nearly Harvest time and over many years and like thousands of othercommunities, Central faithful will be considering what gifts they can bring.Traditionally, these gifts have been taken to church members and friendsno longer able to attend services who love to receive the gifts and havea visit and a chat with those who bring them.

Joy Emerson took on the task of organising the distribution of the giftssome 10 years ago and we thank her most sincerely for all her loving careand attention in the efficient execution of this task. Following her'retirement', the Caring Team have stepped into the breech and we wouldlike to share a few thoughts for you to mull over.

Most of those who receive the gifts are either in care homes or are veryrestricted in their mobility and ability to care for themselves. We wouldbe very grateful if you would consider the type of item that could beoffered in a gift bag and some suggestions would be small pots of jam ormarmalade, small tins of fruit, beans, macaroni cheese etc or tiny packetsof biscuits or confectionary. Ladies love to receive little bunches of cutflowers or maybe even a small arrangement that needs little care.Gentlemen possibly might prefer a pot plant for their window sill.

If you felt you would rather give a small financial gift that the team coulduse to supplement the gift bags, that would be very helpful.

Lastly, we would be very grateful for offers of help with distributing thegifts on Monday 24th September. There are about 30 names on our listbut if 15 people took 2 each, we would soon be done!

Joy will be a hard act to follow, but with your help, we can try to keep upthe good work. May we take this opportunity to thank you all in advance. The Caring Team (Currently Tessa Goodwin, Monica Lansley, MarionPowell, Venna Milsom, Rachel Evans)

And a note from Marion Farley. How time flies! September already, and time for our Church Harvest. Ifyou wish to bring items to decorate the Church, such asfruit, vegetables, flowers and foliage, could we pleasehave these at the Friday Coffee Morning (21) or before10.00am on Saturday (22ⁿ). That would be a great helpto us.

REFLECTIONS

When did you last move house? Perhaps it is a long time since youpacked up everything from the house which had been your home formany years, or, maybe, you have been through that experience recently.

Well, we have just ‘down-sized’ from a house to a bungalow, and I cantell you, it is quite a task putting everything in boxes, and marking them. Then, having done all that, you reach your new surroundings, and enteran empty building -- and, suddenly, every room is being filled withfurniture which fit perfectly in your previous house, but now has to finda suitable position in your new home!

And, those boxes -- hundreds of them it seems -- are just dropped bythe furniture removers, ready for you to deal with. They have to beopened. And places have to be found for each item contained in thoseboxes . -- And we have to remember WHERE we have put them!!

How many times, in the last few days, Harold and I have said ‘where is--?, or , ‘I haven’t seen such and such’ -- Is it lost, or just gone astray, orjust can’t be found?

It has made me think how we, as people, can become lost to God. Wecan so easily go astray. We can so easily wander away from the placewhere we should be -- close to God.

But, thankfully, God sent His own Son, Jesus, to seek and save those whoare lost. Perhaps we are bewildered. We may be perplexed by illness, pain, loneliness. We may be drifting into bad company; becomingalcohol dependent; being tempted by drugs; doing anything Godwouldn’t like. All sorts of situations can allow us to stray from God.However, Jesus knows what we are suffering. He knows if we are lost, and He wants us back. And He is waiting to pick us up, dust us off, andgive us a brand new start -- no questions asked. Jesus offers us love, and wants to put His arms around us and is waiting to say -- ‘thank Godyou are found’.

THE PERFECT NEIGHBOUR

Define the perfect neighbour. He/she is someone who stops to chatwith you for no longer than a few minutes at a time, and who returnsitems within 16 days of borrowing them.

A survey of 1,000 home owners also found that the ideal neighbourinvites nearby residents to their home for a meal six times a year, butasks for no more than two favours a month, such as signing for parcelsor mowing a shared lawn.

The research, for More Than, the insurers, also found that perfectneighbours: deliver a bottle of wine within three and a half days ofsomeone moving in; agree to watch your children 10 times a year; andcheck on your house over four days when you go on holiday.

A good neighbour also knows when to back off. Small talk should last nomore than four minutes over the garden fence. Neighbours should alsonever cut a tree, plant or shrub that has partially grown into their gardenwithout asking the owner of the plant first.

THEY CANNOT BE SERIOUS!!

If you have room for it in your garden, plant more weeds such as thistlesnext year! The Royal Horticultural Society says it will help declining beepopulations.

CROSSING THE CHANNEL

A Big Thank You from Steve Clark.

I would like to express my thanks andappreciation to everyone who has supportedme through my channel swim, with their kindwords and generous sponsorship. This overwhelming support has madedoing this all worth while.

Unfortunately, due to a deterioration in sea state, and poor weatherconditions, the skipper abandoned the crossing just 6 miles off the Frenchcoast. This was very frustrating as France looked within touchingdistance, but 3 of the team just weren’t strong enough to continue.

I will definitely be doing this again but when, where and how is yet to bedecided, but I will keep you all updated. I just hope it doesn’t involveanother 2 am start!

Again, a big thank you to everyone.

SAINT OF THE MONTH. CEOLFRITH (d 716)

Ceolfrith is a good patron saint for anyone who has studied hard fortheir profession, is strong in the face of tragedy, and who can also offersome homely care to others in need.

This well loved abbot of Wearmouth and Jarrow came from a nobleNorthumbrian family, and was ordained at Ripon when he was just 27.After a period of travel, he returned to Ripon and monastic practices. The monks soon came to appreciate him for another good reason:Ceolfrith was an outstanding cook. They asked him to be the monas-tery’s baker, and he agreed.

In time Ceolfrith was moved on to Wearmouth, and became abbot. Then disaster struck, when a plague killed all of the monks who couldsing or read. Only Ceolfrith and the boy Bede were left alive. Theystayed on, believing God had called them to be there.

Ceolfrith seems to have been a kindly and energetic leader. During hisrule 600 monks joined the monastery, the library was doubled, and theendowments increased. But his biggest legacy came when he commis-sioned three Pandects (complete Bibles in single volumes ) in uncialscript. One still survives today. A kindly baking abbot who also hap-pened to leave us the earliest complete Latin Bible – not a bad combina-tion of skills!

A SEASIDE HOLIDAY

When planning a holiday well in advance,One must accept weather as a matter of chance. We all wish for sunshine and skies painted blue,But unfortunately, days of sunshine are very few.

It really isn’t much fun with the rain lashing down,Miserable if you are visiting a seaside town.High winds blowing a gale from the open seas,Makes walking the ‘Prom’ a bit of a wheeze.

Every morning we are greeted with a grey cloudy sky,“What has happened to our Summer!” is the battle cry.Or go to the waterproofs, prepared to tackle the day,Hoping the showers of rain, might at last blow away.

Huddled in Jumpers and Anoraks, stoic to the last,Battling the elements, but not walking fast.In the distance a Cafe shines like a beacon of light,To rain lashed faces, what a welcoming sight.

Two thousand and twelve we shall remember it well,When out of the skies torrents of rain fell and fell,Flooding towns and villages, rivers bursting their banks,For those helping in the community we offer our thanks.

WHAT’S IN YOUR HAND?

September is the time when we get back to our normal routines afterthe summer break. It’s a good opportunity to think how God could useus to make a real difference in our workplace, school, family, friends andcommunity.

God equips us with everything we need to complete this work of show-ing love and establishing justice. If we are doing what God wants us todo, we can really feel the joy and power of the Holy Spirit.

John Ortberg in his book ‘It All Goes Back In The Box’ tells the story ofJohnny the bagger. Johnny, 19 years old with Downs syndrome, workedat a supermarket checkout, putting people’s items into bags. After atraining event on how to make a difference, he decided that he wantedto do something special for his customers. His idea was to put a thoughtfor the day into every bag; something positive about how good it is to bealive or how much people matter!

Every night his dad would help him carefully prepare the slips of paperand sign every one. Each time he bagged someone's groceries, he wouldput his saying on top of the last bag. Then he would look the person inthe eye and say, ‘I've put a great saying in your bag. I hope it helps youhave a good day. Thanks for coming here.’ A month later, the storemanager noticed that the line at Johnny's checkout was three timeslonger than anyone else's! People wanted to get hold of Johnny'sthought for the day. He was doing more than filling bags with groceries;he was filling lives with hope!
