The most important thing about being Hispanic is our Heritage.Without it we would not be who we are today – Proud Hispanics. Our heritage is filled with Traditions and a Culture that everyone wants to

be part of, no matter what nationality or race they are. We have the music, food, style & way of life that says “FELICIDAD” (Happiness).

Who doesn't want to be part of something that makes them happy?

That's why it is important to keep the “UNITY” of the Hispanic Community Alive. We need to show our younger generations that being

Latino is a thing to be proud of. We need to show our youth that they should embrace who they are and where they come from. We need to teach our young to preserve the Hispanic Culture by representing it

with honor and respect.

Hold your Heritage close to your heart, Be proud of who you are & Be happy with where you come from – YOU ARE HISPANIC!!!!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~La cosa más importante de ser Hispano es nuestro patrimonio.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month from

Well Los Lonely Boys from a Hispanic background that grew up in the “barrio”. Well Los Lonely Boys are such a group. This group is made up of three brothers that come from a are such a group. This group is made up of three brothers that come from a Hispanic background and they did, in fact, grew up in the “barrio”; but as you Hispanic background and they did, in fact, grew up in the “barrio”; but as you can see they overcame anything and everything that could have kept them can see they overcame anything and everything that could have kept them down. I believe that this is what true “role-models” are all about. Coming from down. I believe that this is what true “role-models” are all about. Coming from a background that could have easily lost this talented trio, Los Lonely Boys a background that could have easily lost this talented trio, Los Lonely Boys chose to dedicate themselves to their music and they chose to stand above all chose to dedicate themselves to their music and they chose to stand above all the negative influences that surrounded them. Henry, Ringo and Jojo showed the negative influences that surrounded them. Henry, Ringo and Jojo showed the music industry, as well as society in general, what a few guys from the the music industry, as well as society in general, what a few guys from the “barrio” could accomplish with hard work, dedication and God. “barrio” could accomplish with hard work, dedication and God.

We interviewed Jojo in July 2011 and the only words that can describe him are: We interviewed Jojo in July 2011 and the only words that can describe him are: Down to earth, funny and humble. Talking with Jojo confirmed what I knew all Down to earth, funny and humble. Talking with Jojo confirmed what I knew all along which was that “these guys are warm hearted and really do care about along which was that “these guys are warm hearted and really do care about their fans, as well as the community.” They are truly and undoubtedly one-of-a-their fans, as well as the community.” They are truly and undoubtedly one-of-a-kind. Here is how the interview went:kind. Here is how the interview went:

Conexiones LatinoConexiones Latino: : What inspires the great music you create? What inspires the great music you create?

JojoJojo:: The material basically comes from what we believe is the greater The material basically comes from what we believe is the greater source, it comes from God and I’m talking about lyrically and musically. We source, it comes from God and I’m talking about lyrically and musically. We really focus on life in general. Our music has a lot to do with what we really focus on life in general. Our music has a lot to do with what we experience and what we see or hear. It comes from where ever we have been experience and what we see or hear. It comes from where ever we have been or are going - It’s from talking to people and from seeing the news, also from or are going - It’s from talking to people and from seeing the news, also from life experiences. I think that trying to tie all these experiences into music and life experiences. I think that trying to tie all these experiences into music and lyrics is a good way to get people to relate to it. We base our music around our lyrics is a good way to get people to relate to it. We base our music around our regular lives. We are just basic cats that have been given the talent of music regular lives. We are just basic cats that have been given the talent of music and I think we are doing the best we can do with it. We play, write and give our and I think we are doing the best we can do with it. We play, write and give our music to the people but we also do things like charitable contributions, music to the people but we also do things like charitable contributions, fundraisers and help out all kinds of people in the community. But like I said, fundraisers and help out all kinds of people in the community. But like I said, much of the inspiration comes from God & life itself.much of the inspiration comes from God & life itself. 7

Conexiones LatinoConexiones Latino: : Did you or do you guys have any obstacles & how did Did you or do you guys have any obstacles & how did you overcome those?you overcome those?

JojoJojo:: The obstacles were always there, even when we were with our dad. The obstacles were always there, even when we were with our dad. When we were little kids, being mexican-american, walking into a place where When we were little kids, being mexican-american, walking into a place where we just didn’t blend well, people just weren’t used to it and it created a funny we just didn’t blend well, people just weren’t used to it and it created a funny taste in their mouth, so they talked and said things that were discriminating but taste in their mouth, so they talked and said things that were discriminating but the way our dad always taught us to accept it and take it was to tell us “You the way our dad always taught us to accept it and take it was to tell us “You know what, when we get on the stage and after we play you’ll see how these know what, when we get on the stage and after we play you’ll see how these people react” and it was just that way. people react” and it was just that way.

We have obstacles all the time, for instance I had vocal cord surgery not too We have obstacles all the time, for instance I had vocal cord surgery not too long ago and probably last week I nearly lost an eye on stage because the end long ago and probably last week I nearly lost an eye on stage because the end of the microphone stand poked me severely in the eye. So you see if you’re of the microphone stand poked me severely in the eye. So you see if you’re talking about obstacles there are all kinds of obstacles that we go through all talking about obstacles there are all kinds of obstacles that we go through all the time. But one of the biggest obstacles is being away from home and away the time. But one of the biggest obstacles is being away from home and away from the family. We have to learn to balance that out and we have to let our from the family. We have to learn to balance that out and we have to let our family know “Hey, we’re still here even though we are gone a lot of the time” family know “Hey, we’re still here even though we are gone a lot of the time” and we tell them that we love them and that we are out here so that hopefully and we tell them that we love them and that we are out here so that hopefully we can give them a better life. we can give them a better life.

During my conversation with Jojo I started to explain to him what Conexiones During my conversation with Jojo I started to explain to him what Conexiones Latino was all about – I told him it was all about reaching out to the Hispanic Latino was all about – I told him it was all about reaching out to the Hispanic Community especially the younger Hispanic generation, and here is what he Community especially the younger Hispanic generation, and here is what he had to say:had to say:

JojoJojo: : It’s really important to us to reach out to the Hispanic Youth too, It’s really important to us to reach out to the Hispanic Youth too, because you know we are all part of the human-race and we’re Latinos and for because you know we are all part of the human-race and we’re Latinos and for us that’s a really big thing. You know you hear a lot of musicians say “We’re us that’s a really big thing. You know you hear a lot of musicians say “We’re not role models we’re musicians” and I’m gonna tell you something – Los not role models we’re musicians” and I’m gonna tell you something – Los Lonely Boys are not perfect at all - there is nothing perfect about us. But we Lonely Boys are not perfect at all - there is nothing perfect about us. But we do realize that there is a big responsibility in being role-models and “hopefully” do realize that there is a big responsibility in being role-models and “hopefully” the younger generation will look at the younger generation will look at cats like us and think “Hey they did it”. cats like us and think “Hey they did it”. I mean, we come from nothing, we I mean, we come from nothing, we come from the streets and Barrios come from the streets and Barrios and I guess you could say we come and I guess you could say we come from being “Vato Locos” in a way; from being “Vato Locos” in a way; we’re just like everyone else. But to we’re just like everyone else. But to know what your magazine does, I know what your magazine does, I think it’s awesome. There’s a lot of think it’s awesome. There’s a lot of good in the world and when we are good in the world and when we are out here doing what we do for the out here doing what we do for the world we know there are a lot of world we know there are a lot of people looking at us and like I said people looking at us and like I said before, we’re not perfect - we’re just before, we’re not perfect - we’re just like everybody else. But we do like everybody else. But we do everything we can to make tomorrow everything we can to make tomorrow a better day. a better day.

Conexiones Latino: Conexiones Latino: How do you How do you feel about being a “role model”?feel about being a “role model”?

JojoJojo: It just comes down to the fact : It just comes down to the fact that we are not perfect people, and that we are not perfect people, and no one can look at us like we are no one can look at us like we are anything saint like, there is no one anything saint like, there is no one that is like that. Jesus was the only that is like that. Jesus was the only one that was like that. But we all can one that was like that. But we all can do our best to live life everyday and do our best to live life everyday and make it better everyday especially if make it better everyday especially if yesterday was not very good. But yesterday was not very good. But since we are always being told that since we are always being told that we are role models from everyone we are role models from everyone around us we take it with a lot of around us we take it with a lot of gratitude and we are happy to know gratitude and we are happy to know that three Chicanos from the streets that three Chicanos from the streets could become that. The bottom line is could become that. The bottom line is that we want to take it for what it’s that we want to take it for what it’s worth and do everything we can with worth and do everything we can with it. The more kids and youth we can get in touch with and talk to them about it. The more kids and youth we can get in touch with and talk to them about these things, I think the more we can help out.these things, I think the more we can help out.

Conexiones LatinoConexiones Latino: : So what advice can you give to encourage the Hispanic So what advice can you give to encourage the Hispanic Youth to know that there is something better than what they feel is being Youth to know that there is something better than what they feel is being offered to them?offered to them?

JojoJojo: W: Well like you said, there is something better out there and it doesn’t ell like you said, there is something better out there and it doesn’t matter what you do in life - If you wanna be a dancer, an artist, a chef, a doctor matter what you do in life - If you wanna be a dancer, an artist, a chef, a doctor or a lawyer. You gotta take passion in what you do, but you have to really or a lawyer. You gotta take passion in what you do, but you have to really believe in believe in yourselfyourself. You also have to look past the stereotypes of being . You also have to look past the stereotypes of being Chicano or mexican-american or any of that. No matter where you are from or Chicano or mexican-american or any of that. No matter where you are from or what street you live on you can change your life for the better and do better for what street you live on you can change your life for the better and do better for yourself, if you really yourself, if you really choosechoose to do that. That’s just the way it is. Hard work to do that. That’s just the way it is. Hard work and dedication will get you anything you want in life Sure you can go sell and dedication will get you anything you want in life Sure you can go sell drugs, go hit the street corners and all those other things that look real easy, drugs, go hit the street corners and all those other things that look real easy, because everyone is making it sound so easy through music and TV these because everyone is making it sound so easy through music and TV these days. But you’re not gonna be happy in that life and in time you’ll find out that it days. But you’re not gonna be happy in that life and in time you’ll find out that it was not the best choice you made. It’s not easy and it never gets easier.was not the best choice you made. It’s not easy and it never gets easier.

Conexiones LatinoConexiones Latino: : What do you feel the biggest challenge our Hispanic What do you feel the biggest challenge our Hispanic youth have today?youth have today?

JojoJojo: : Well I guess poverty and education are two of the biggest challenges Well I guess poverty and education are two of the biggest challenges and I guess there is also a lot of gang related stuff which ties into drugs and all and I guess there is also a lot of gang related stuff which ties into drugs and all kinds of negative stuff which is everywhere. This is a challenge throughout the kinds of negative stuff which is everywhere. This is a challenge throughout the whole human race, but speaking from the Latino Community those are some of whole human race, but speaking from the Latino Community those are some of the biggest challenges. It seems like one of the only thing that young Chicanos the biggest challenges. It seems like one of the only thing that young Chicanos have to look forward to is prison and that’s not right. We’re better than that. have to look forward to is prison and that’s not right. We’re better than that. This country was built on hard work and our blood, sweat and tears. Our youth This country was built on hard work and our blood, sweat and tears. Our youth are not being taught or shown that life is all about hard work and hey, you are not being taught or shown that life is all about hard work and hey, you might not bring in 1000 dollars a week but you are gonna bring in enough might not bring in 1000 dollars a week but you are gonna bring in enough money to live an honest life. Who knows maybe you could become a money to live an honest life. Who knows maybe you could become a millionaire as long as you do it with good in your heart and right things in your millionaire as long as you do it with good in your heart and right things in your mind. I think that anything is possible. Our Hispanic Youth need to stop going mind. I think that anything is possible. Our Hispanic Youth need to stop going to prison and start running the prisons through their hard work – education and to prison and start running the prisons through their hard work – education and dedication. dedication.

I will tell you this much too. A lot of people don’t know this about the Los I will tell you this much too. A lot of people don’t know this about the Los Lonely Boys; we were also involved with gangs and all that kind of stuff. We Lonely Boys; we were also involved with gangs and all that kind of stuff. We grew up like regular cats but the music is what kept us from completely giving grew up like regular cats but the music is what kept us from completely giving ourselves to that kind of a life. We had friends that were hard core into it and ourselves to that kind of a life. We had friends that were hard core into it and they ended up in prison. Some of them are finally getting out of prison and they ended up in prison. Some of them are finally getting out of prison and now they think “Man, I could have made a better decision”. They do talk to us now they think “Man, I could have made a better decision”. They do talk to us and say “Man, you guys kept on doing the same thing that you always did - and say “Man, you guys kept on doing the same thing that you always did - playing music, staying true to it and look you guys made it.” But that is what it playing music, staying true to it and look you guys made it.” But that is what it takes.takes.

At the end of the interview I started to talk to Jojo about how our Hispanic At the end of the interview I started to talk to Jojo about how our Hispanic Youths feel like they are kicked around in the community and how they are Youths feel like they are kicked around in the community and how they are looked down upon because of the “stereotypes”. looked down upon because of the “stereotypes”. And his response was:And his response was:JojoJojo: : You know we are all God’s children and we should all treat each other You know we are all God’s children and we should all treat each other the same. Which is the message we really want to spread. I know we are the same. Which is the message we really want to spread. I know we are talking about Latinos here but I am talking about “La Raza Humana antes de talking about Latinos here but I am talking about “La Raza Humana antes de todo” (The Human Race before anything). And in talking about our Latino todo” (The Human Race before anything). And in talking about our Latino people “We gotta get it together, keep it together and we gotta stick together - people “We gotta get it together, keep it together and we gotta stick together - we will make it, we just gotta believe”. we will make it, we just gotta believe”.
