Seventy-seven of the company’s top emergency response professionals from nine countries came together for the summit, where they shared best practices and took part in realistic emergency exercises. Bruce Huber, senior director of safety and health for Barrick, said the summit allows employees from around the world to share knowledge, increase their ability to handle emergencies at their mines and learn how to act as a team with people from other countries. “It’s a three-quarters of a million dollars exercise,” he said. “But if these guys go home and save a life it is worth it 100 times over.” The Summit began in Carlin, Nevada with two days of training at the University of Nevada Reno, Fire Science Academy that included aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF), a hazardous materials scenario, confined- space rescue, high angle rope rescue, a knot tying challenge, pickup fires and treating victims of a major multiple vehicle accident. The summit continued mid week in Elko as miners performed community service at the Family Resource Center, Girl Scout House and Southside Elementary School. The summit then moved to Salt Lake City, Utah on Thursday for a mass casualty scenario at the University Health Care Burn Centre. There physicians provided training for treating critical burn injuries. The summit concluded on Friday in Park City, Utah. The focus on safety demonstrated through the Global Mine Rescue Summit is mirrored by the FSA, where it is our vision to be the worldwide leader in educating the emergency response and management community. For almost forty years, we have striven to build a culture of respect for safety, client service, teamwork, and community support.
