SEMINARS & SPEAKERSThis lecture follows the controversies as researchers sought to solve a 350 year old mystery and give the men back a voice through an understanding of their lives and the events that led to their imprisonment. It has also uncovered the voices of those who survived their ordeal and reconnected living Scottish descendants in the US with this dark past.
Join Marci Richardson and Amy Goldstein from Elegant Ewe Travel as they share their explorations of the rich hand-knitting textile history of mainland Scotland and the northern islands including Shetland and Orkney. We will look at the history of the Sanquhar gloves, Fisherman Ganseys particularly of the Moray Firth area, and knitting in the northern isles including Shetland lace and the Tree and Star/Fair Isle sweater. We will also discuss some of the Sheep breeds particular to these areas including the Scottish blackface of the mainland, the Shetland sheep of Shetland, and the North Ronaldsay sheep of Orkney and the characteristics that make these wools unique.
A music and history program called Jacobite Risings in Song & Story. As a Highlander sympathetic to Prince Charlie’s cause, Charlie Zahm fills the program with history, music of the time, from the perspective of a true historical figure who actually fought for Prince Charlie’s cause.

SEMINARS & SPEAKERSTens of thousands of immigrants came to New England during the 1600s: some voluntarily, some not. Carol Gardner will discuss the fates of 420 Scottish prisoners of war shipped to New England and sold as forced laborers in 1650 and 1651. Their experiences—as soldiers, captives, involuntary immigrants, servants and later free men—offer a unique perspective on life in early colonial America. Evidence of their contributions to early colonial New England can still be found in towns across New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts.
According to the U.S. Census, Maine and New Hampshire have two of the largest percentages of residents of Scottish and Scots-Irish ancestry of U.S. states. Two groups of immigrants contribute to that heritage: Scottish prisoners of war, arriving in 1650 and 1651, and the Ulster Scots from Northern Ireland, arriving in 1718 and thereafter. Carol Gardner will discuss their distinct routes to the New World, their fates upon arrival, and the communities in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts that they helped to build, defend and define.
In November 2013 archaeologists observing building work near Durham Cathedral made an unexpected and unusual discovery when disordered tumbles of articulated skeletons were uncovered in two mass graves. Over the next two years, a complex jigsaw of evidence was pieced together by a team of researchers in order to establish the identity of the human remains. Today we know them to be some of the Scottish prisoners who died in terrible circumstances in Durham Cathedral and Castle following the Battle of Dunbar on the south-east coast of Scotland on 3rd September 1650. Using the latest techniques of archaeological science, it has been possible to reconstruct how and why these men vanished off the historical radar.
Dr. Carol Gardner is the author of a recently published book, The Involuntary American: A Scottish Prisoner’s Journey to the New World.

SEMINARS & SPEAKERSScottish food inspired by some of Scotland’s true dishes from history and how they have been developed since. Gary will also make contemporary cuisine from Scotland. Gary’s classes are always entertaining and are very popular at the Games!
In recognition of this year’s Guest of Honor, an exploration of the origins and history of the Buchanan tartan and some of the many variations that arose in the past 200 years.
From the time of George IV’s visit in 1822, clan tartans have been the main identifier of Scottish heritage. But where did they come from, and why?
An exploration of the tartans and dress of the ever popular Outlander series in the context of surviving specimens and other evidence from the ‘45.
Often overlooked in favour of male clothing, this talk explores traditional female dress of the 18th and early 19th century Highlands.
From an anti-Union symbol to the badge of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite army and a characteristic of the Highland Revival. Tartan as a cultural icon is explored in this talk.
