GEMS FRON\ THE NORTHWOODS By Roy Northwood

He I Io Aga I n !

~ow for national news (sound I ike Dan Rather, don't I?) The biggy is that the Sul!ITler Olympic stamps are back on sale! The day after the Olumpics were over - however, Lynns says you can only get them from Washington, D. C. No service charge and do not have

· to purchase $5.00 worth. I heard via the grape vine that many post offices kept them and wi I I put them on sale locally - so check there first before you write Washington, D. C.

Another goody - the Phi I ate I i c Mai I Order Fae i I i ty is no I onger a second c I ass operation Its status has been raised to the same stature as the Stamps Division (Now maybe they wil I stop back stamping FDC's) but I doubt it! Also the Emily Bissel I stamp may becane in short supp ly as Lynns reports 60 mi I I ion of the 160 mil I Ion were destroyed (no reason given).

Some of the goodies I promised from last time . - The commerative for General de Galvez - 1'his is really a worthwhile one for the American Revolution - He was a Spanish General who fought the British to protest Spanish interests in America during the Rcvo]lltion. - It really had nothing to do with interests in the American Revolut ion at al] - Oh well, maybe the Spanish Ambassador was visiting Jimmy that day! --

And now to Mr . Mozzoi - Seems this commerative is the final peak of a very entailed research done on him by Sister Margherita Marchione (Ph.D.) under a grant from the N.J. ARBC. She wrote a book about him "Jeffersons Zealous Whig," and became so envolved that this stamp is the result. (It just happened the Italian ambassador? resident?) was visiting Jimmy that day! Anyway he has much more background to honor him as a Revolutionary figure than de Galvez! He wrote four volumes on American Revolutionary Period published in Paris in 1788 which are still considered the best describing that period - He was influential to Jefferson and other Americans of that period - lie was Virginia's agent in Europe during the war and spent a great amount a great amount of time espousing America's cause over there. His writings under the pen name of "Furioso" predated Paine , Henry and Jefferson on the Revolutionary cause. - He was the first t o vrite "All men are by nr,ture equally free and independant . " This was paraphrased by Jefferson in the Constitution, John Kennedy in his book, and Ly many others, ineludine being used in the Virginia Bill of Rights. 'l 'here is lots more - Was envolved in the French and Polish revolutions - instrumental in forming the Constitutional committees - Well worth a commemorative . But I still can ' t see him breaking the chain of Air Mail fieures and beingput on an Air Mail stamp for frozen Buffalo Chips!

How about a discount to stamp collectors that ~ever use the stamps as postage - T would think it would mean a reflln rl on your taxes some vay, but then I don't have a political mind! (What's yours is mine and ;,hat's mine is mine ! )

So until they fil I al I the hot air balloons with the wind power from politicians so we can really save energy -

Sa__o~ soon

1p_~·7 P.S.Did you read where the electric car the post office was going to use to save gasoline

was dropped as it turned out to be a failure. Guess no one had long enuf electrical extension cords!
