Dream Act will be introduced in Congress next week

WASHINGTON – The Dream Act bill, which would allow undocu-mented students to regularize their immigration status if they go to col-lege or enlist in the military, will go to Congress next week.

The proposal will be part of an amendment to the defense spending bill, which will be considered by Congress.

The Deam Act bill has been stalled in Congress since 2003. It will al-low undocumented students to earn legal residency status if they arrived to the United States while they were under age.

The announcement was made by Harry Reid, D-NV and leader of the democrats in the Senate, but he didn’t reveal if he had enough votes to pass the bill.

Along with the Dream Act the defense spending bill is including an amendment to revoke the prohibition for openly homosexual men and women to serve in the military.

“These are two essential amendments for the defense spending bill and I hope they (Republicans) will allow it to move forward,” Reid said.

The senator said that until now there has been no way of passing a comprehensive immigration reform, but that the passing of the Dream Act is important to the young men and women who want to go to college or serve in the military.

To benefit from this bill, children must have had to come to the United States when they were younger than 16 years of age and must have been in the United States at least five years. Those who enlist in the military must serve for at least two years and attend college for two years.

Some critics have said that attaching the Dream Act bill to the defense spending bill is a way for Democrats to earn votes in the upcoming No-vember elections.

Police protest against superintendent

CHICAGO – Hundreds of Chicago police officers marched outside the Police Headquarters asking for the superintendent to resign.

The march, which lasted about an hour, was staged because Weis and the union representing the officers are at odds.

March participants carried signs that read “More Police No Weis” while they walked outside the headquarters the morning of Sept. 15.

Among the main complaints by the union is that police officers have been assigned to other duties, leaving the city’s 25 precincts short staffed.

“In the last several years, I’ve seen a big decline in morale and also a decline in manpower,” said Lt. Brent Fidler, 39, a 13 veteran of the depart-ment who participated in the march with his two young children and carried a sign that read “Resign.”

“And both of those things are directly related to the safety of the police officers on the street and the safety of the citizens of the neighborhood. The bad guys are losing respect for police because the police are afraid to do their jobs.”

Meanwhile other officers, who didn’t want their names to be used, ex-pressed their complaints.

Some said that politicians and high-ranking officers in the police depart-ment are not concerned with the safety of officers, particularly the safety of those who respond to crime calls in squad vehicles with only one officer instead of two.

They also said that while crime is allegedly down in the city, it’s has gone down because people don’t report crimes not because they don’t happen.

Meanwhile, Weis has rejected requests from the police union to resign.“I’ve still got more things to (do)”, Weis said. “And I’m certainly not go-

ing to leave until I get that work done.”Weis’ contract expires March 1, 1011. Weis was hired by mayor Richard

Daley in 2008. Weis was an FBI officer before being hired as Chicago’s top police officer. He has been frequently criticized for the personnel changes he made early in his tenure.

Daley continues supporting Weis, but because he won’t seek reelection next year, Weis’ future in Chicago is in the air.

Policías protestan contra superintendente en Chicago

CHICAGO – Cientos de oficiales de policía marcharon enfrente de las oficinas centrales del departamento, exigiendo que el actual superin-tendente de la corporación deje su cargo.

La marcha, que duró alrededor de una ahora, se dio debido al creciente rencor que existe entre Weis y el sindicato que representa a los oficiales.

Los participantes en la marcha, que se realizó la mañana del 15 de septiembre, cargaban letreros que decían “Más policía. No Weis”.

Entre las principales quejas del sindicato está el que oficiales de poli-cía han sido asignados a otras tareas, bajando considerablemente el nú-mero de oficiales en cada uno de los 25 precintos de la ciudad.

“En los últimos años he visto un gran descenso en la moral y un des-censo en la fuerza policiaca”, dijo el teniente Brent Filder, de 39 años de edad y veterano de 13 años de la fuerza policiaca, quien acudió a la protesta con sus hijos de 3 años y 20 meses de edad y portaba un letrero que decía “renuncia”.

“Ambas cosas están relacionadas directamente con la seguridad de los oficiales de policía en las calles y la seguridad de los ciudadanos del ve-cindario. Los maleantes están perdiendo el respeto por la policía porque la policía está atemorizada de hacer su trabajo”, dijo.

Mientras tanto, otros oficiales que participaron en la protesta y no quisieron que se dieran a conocer sus nombres, expusieron sus quejas.

Unos dijeron que los políticos y los altos mandos de la policía no están preocupados por la seguridad de los oficiales, en particular de los que viajan en las patrullas respondiendo a crímenes con solo un oficial en vez de dos.

También dijeron que se habla de una disminución en el crimen, pero esta persona dijo que el crimen ha disminuido porque la gente no reporta los crímenes, no porque sucedan menos.

Mientras tanto Weis ha rechazado los pedidos del sindicato para que renuncie.

“Todavía tengo trabajo que hacer”, dijo, “y no me iré hasta que lo termine”.

El contrato de Weis con la ciudad termina el 1 de marzo de 2011. Weis fue contratado por el alcalde Richard Daley en el año 2008. Weis fue oficial del FBI antes de convertirse en superintendente de la policía de chicago y con frecuencia ha sido criticado por no estar en sintonía con los oficiales de policía de la ciudad. También ha sido criticado por los cambios de personal que hizo al principio de su administración.

El anuncio lo hizo el senador Harry Reid, demócrata de Nevada y líder de mayoría demócrata en el senado, quien no reveló si tiene los votos suficien-tes para aprobar la ley.

Junto con la ley Dream Act también se presentará una enmienda que re-voque la prohibición de que las personas homosexuales sirvan en las fuerzas armadas.

“Estas son dos enmiendas esenciales para la ley de gastos de defensa y espero que ellos (los republicanos) nos dejen seguir adelante”, dijo Reid.

Él dijo que por ahora no ha sido posible aprobar una reforma migratoria integral, pero la aprobación del Dream Act es importante para los jóvenes que deseen ira a la universidad o servir en el ejército.

Para beneficiarse con esta acta, los jóvenes deben haber entrado al país siendo menores de 16 años de edad y deben haber estado en Estados Unidos cuando menos cinco años. Los que se enlisten en el ejército deben servir cuando menos dos años y estudiar dos años en la universidad o colegio.

Algunos críticos dicen que el agregar la propuesta del Dream Act a la pro-puesta de presupuesto de la defensa es una estrategia demócrata para ganar votos en las elecciones de noviembre.

AURORA – El Comité de los Pioneros de la Herencia Hispana, formado por So-corro Campos, María Alicia Díaz, Penny Falcón, la concejal Juany Garza, Cynthia Hernández y Gabriela Wyatt, realizó el Quinto desayuno de reconocimiento a los pioneros del área de Aurora.

En esta ocasión el comité reconoció a los pioneros del cuidado de la salud. Los

galardonados este año fueron Theresa Chaidez, Salvador Ríos, Dr. José Treviño, Dr. Mario Zapata y Antonia Martínez de Maravilla.

El himno nacional de los Estados Unidos fue interpretado por Cynthia Hernán-dez, mientras que el himno nacional mexicano corrió a cargo de Ricardo Parra.

AURORA – La Quinta de los Reyes fue el escenario en el que se realizaron varias celebra-ciones esta semana para marcar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana.

La Asamblea Republicana Nacional Hispana de Illinois organizó un evento de recaudación de fondos para conmemorar este mes y contó con la presencia de Jason Plummer, candidato a vicegobernador; Randy Hultgren, candidato al Congreso; y Steve Kim, candidato a Procurador de Justicia del estado.

Además, se realizó la ya tradicional ceremonia del Grito de Independencia, a la cual asistió la concejal del distrito 2 Juany Garza.

Undocumented arrested for DUI not necessarely face immediate deportation

AURORA – Tres niñas de 11 años de edad estuvieron a punto de ser secuestradas en los alrededores de una escuela secundaria de la ciudad.

La policía está pidiendo la ayuda del público para identificar al sospechoso.Alrededor de las 4 p.m. del 14 de septiembre tres niñas le dijeron a la policía que un hombre se acercó a ellas

cuando estaban en el estacionamiento de una tienda de abarrotes en la cuadra 400 de North Farnsworth Avenue. El hombre estaba a bordo de una camioneta negra tipo SUV.

Las niñas dijeron que el hombre había abierto la puerta del vehículo y les había dicho “vengan”. Cuando las niñas se negaron, y empezaron a alejarse el hombre aparentemente les mostró una pistola. Al ver esto,

las niñas corrieron hacia un negocio cercano y vieron que el vehículo se alejaba en dirección sur por la avenida Farnsworth.

El sospechoso es descrito como un hombre de raza negra, delgado, de entre 20 y 30 años de edad, con cabello negro de largo mediano y peinado en trenzas, cabellos obscuros y de piel obscura. Vestía pantalón de mezclilla, camisa azul y un reloj de oro. La camioneta tenía una línea plateada en la parte de abajo del vehículo y tierra cerca de las llantas.

La policía pide a quien tenga información que llame a los investigadores al tel. (630) 256-5500 o a Crime Sto-ppers del Área de Aurora al tel. (630) 892-1000. Las llamadas a Crime Stoppers son anónimas y califican para recibir una recompensa en efectivo por información que lleve a un arresto en el caso.

Attempted child abduction near a school in Aurora

Police ask for help in identifying the suspect

AURORA – Three 11 year-old girls apparently were victims of an attempted abduction near a middle school and police are asking for the public’s assistance to identify the suspect.

At about 4 p.m. Sept. 14, three girls told police they were approached by a man driving a black SUV, when they were in the parking lot of a grocery store in the 400 block of North Farnsworth Avenue. They said the man opened the vehicle{s door and told them “come here.” When they refused and began to walk away, the suspect apparently displayed a gun. At that point, the girls ran into a neighboring business and saw the vehicle drive away southbound on Farnsworth Avenue.

The suspect is described as a thin to medium built male black, possibly in his ‘20’s, with black, medium length braided hair; brown eyes and dark skin. He was wearing a blue shirt, blue jeans and a gold watch. The SUV he was driving had silver trim along the bottom of the vehicle and dirt on the body near the tires.

Anyone with information is asked to call Aurora Police Investigators at (630) 256-5500 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000. Callers to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and qualify for a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to any arrests in the case.

El Departamento de Inmigración y Adua-nas (ICE) ha dicho en un memorándum que el arrestar a una persona indocumentada por manejar en estado de ebriedad no necesaria-mente los hace elegibles de forma inmediata para ser deportados.

Además, ahora personas que han sido en-contradas culpables de manejar bajo la in-fluencia del alcohol en el Condado de Kane tendrán que someterse a pruebas adicionales, para probar que no han reincidido.

El nuevo programa del Fiscal del Estado en el Condado de Kane, llamado Programa de Pruebas de Alcohol durante Días Festivos, se realizará durante días de fiesta y otras veces en las que estadísticamente se ha demostrado que se consume más alcohol.

Este programa busca dar a ciertas perso-nas que tienen prohibido consumir alcohol el incentivo necesario para no caer en la tenta-ción.

Personas que han sido encontradas culpa-bles de manejar bajo la influencia del alcohol en repetidas ocasiones, o que están considera-

das como automovilistas ebrios de alto riesgo, por lo general reciben una orden de la corte de no consumir alcohol durante su sentencia y deben someterse a pruebas periódicas para probar que no han consumido alcohol.

El fiscal del Condado de Kane John Bar-santi espera que al incorporar este programa, los infractores estén más al tanto de sus obli-gaciones con la corte. Y a fin de cuentas este programa ayudará a salvar vidas, ya que re-duce las posibilidades de tener automovilistas ebrios en las calles y carreteras.

“Siempre he creído que si puedo iniciar un programa que evite que alguien tome y ma-neje, particularmente aquellos que lo hacen repetidamente, lo voy a hacer,” dijo Barsanti.

El programa fue puesto en marcha el pasa-do fin de semana del Día del Trabajo y a 17 infractores la corte les ordenó que se some-tieran a un examen del alcoholímetro durante ocho momentos específicos durante el fin de semana del Día del Trabajo.

Los 17 infractores que participaron en la fase inaugural del programa eran personas acusadas de manejar bajo la influencia del al-cohol y que han sido sentenciadas a supervi-

sión o libertad condicional y han recibido una orden de no consumir alcohol durante el tiem-po que dure su sentencia. También se incluyó a personas que tienen una gran probabilidad de consumir alcohol aún cuando la corte se los ha prohibido.

Estos infractores tuvieron que presentarse ocho veces durante el fin de semana festivo para que les midieran el nivel de alcohol en la sangre. Las pruebas tienen un costo de cuatro dólares cada una y el costo es pagado por el infractor.

De los 17 infractores sometidos a la fase inicial del programa, solo dos tuvieron alco-hol en la sangre. De los dos que fallaron, uno fue porque no se presentó a cuatro de las ocho pruebas obligatorias y el otro por registrar .01 en el alcoholímetro por haber consumido una cerveza. Ambos serán multados por esta vio-lación a su sentencia.

En el futuro, los infractores serán sometidos a pruebas del alcoholímetro antes, durante y después de los días de fiesta de Halloween, el fin de semana de Acción de Gracias, Año Nue-vo, el fin de semana del Súper Tazón, el Día de San Patricio, el fin de semana del torneo de

baloncesto de la NAACP, el fin de semana del Día de la Remembranza, el Día de la Indepen-dencia y el Día del Trabajo.

Inmigrantes ilegales que son acusados de manejar bajo la influencia del alcohol, ahora enfrentan sentencia de cárcel sin derecho a fianza, de acuerdo a documentos de la Agen-cia de Inmigración y Aduanas.

Después de un arresto por manejar ebrio, un indocumentado tiene la oportunidad de ir ante un juez de inmigración para que su caso sea escuchado. De acuerdo a Cori Bassett, vocera de ICE, cada caso se maneja de forma indi-vidual.

Si un inmigrante es acusado de manejar bajo la influencia del alcohol, no los hace in-mediatamente elegibles para deportación.

ICE no está requerido o por estatutos a de-tener a extranjeros convictos de manejar bajo la influencia del alcohol, pero lo ve como un asunto discrecional de usar las camas de de-tención para criminales convictos y extranje-ros que representan un peligro para la comuni-dad, como aquellos convictos de manejar bajo al influencia del alcohol”, dijo Basset.

New program in Kane County requires additional alcohol testing for DUI offenders

GENEVA – Some offenders convicted in Kane County of drunken driving now must submit to additional testing to prove they have not violated court orders in a new initia-tive of the Kane County State’s Attorney.

The new Holiday Alcohol Testing program will take place during holidays and other times that statistically have been associated with high or increased alcohol consumption.

The objective of the program is to provide additional incentive for certain offenders who are prohibited from drinking to avoid alcohol at specific times when they might be tempted to do otherwise.

Repeat or high-risk DUI offenders typi-

cally are ordered by the court not to consume alcohol during their sentence and to submit to periodic testing to prove they are not con-suming alcohol.

By creating additional court-ordered con-ditions, Kane County State’s Attorney John Barsanti expects to provide additional incen-tive for the offenders to remain vigilant as to their court-ordered obligations. In turn, it is expected that the initiative would reduce the risks that other motorists might encounter a drunken driver during these times, ultimately saving lives.

“It has been my belief that if I can launch a program that will inhibit someone from drinking and driving, particularly those who are habitual offenders, I’ll do it,” Barsanti said.

The program began this past Labor Day weekend and involved 17 offenders, who had to submit to a portable breath test at eight specific times.

Those ordered by the court to submit to the tests were people charged with DUI, sen-tenced to supervision, conditional discharge or probation and ordered not to consume al-cohol for the duration of their sentence.

Also included were repeat DUI offenders or offenders who were deemed to be a high risk to violate terms of their sentence, which included not drinking alcohol.

The offenders had to report to the testing site eight times during the holiday weekend. Each test costs $4 and the fee must be paid by the offender.

Of the 17 offenders, only 2 failed the tests. One person failed to appear for four tests, while the other failed the test when it was shown he had .01 alcohol in his system after drinking a beer.

Both will be cited for the violations. In the future, offenders will be subject to

testing before, during and after Halloween, Thanksgiving weekend, New Year’s, Super

Bowl weekend, St. Patrick’s Day, the week-end of the NCAA men’s basketball tourna-ment, Memorial Day weekend and Indepen-dence Day, as well as Labor Day.

Illegal immigrants charged with DUI now face jail time without bond, according to doc-uments from U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.

After a DUI arrest, an illegal immigrant has the opportunity to appear before an immigra-tion judge to have their case heard. According to ICE spokeswoman Cori Bassett, each case is handled on an individual basis.

If an immigrant is charged with DUI, it does not make them immediately elligible for deportation.

“ICE is not required by statute to detain aliens convicted of DUI, but seeks as a dis-cretionary matter to use detention beds for convicted cirminals and aliens who pose a danger to the community, like those conviced of DUI,” Basset said

Kane State’s Attorney sues 81 Elgin gang members, seeks damages

GENEVA – The Kane County State’s Attorney has sued dozens of members of the Elgin Latin Kings street gang in a bid to protect the city’s residents.

The lawsuit was filed Sept. 8 in Kane county civil court and names 81 members of the Lating Kings, as well as the gang itself. It seeks to prohibit gang members from congregating in public and addresses such behavior as the possession and use of weapons, marijuana and illicit narcot-ics, graffiti, violent behavior and other activities generally associated with street gangs.

With this lawsuit authorities want to diminish the gangs’ criminal activities by impeding their members’ ability to freely operate within the community among law-abiding citizens.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified punitive and compensatory relief for past damage and financial losses incurred as a result of the gang activities and to offset the costs of fighting street gangs.

The suit states in part that “By and through their association with Lating Kings, members engage in a course or pattern of criminal activity including felonies, forcible felonies, aggra-vated batteries, unlawful possession and use of weapons, possession and delivery of controlled substances, criminal defacement of property, and other conduct injurious to the people of the state of Illinois and the city of Elgin.”

The gang members were served with the summonses the week of Sept. 6 and each one was ordered to appear on a specific day the week of Oct 4 in front of Circuit judge Michael J. Col-well at the old Kane County Courthouse in Geneva.

Elgin Police Department officers and attorney Patrick Crimmins researched the criminal his-tories of hundreds of gang members in Elgin to determine who to sue. The Kane County Sher-iff’s Department collaborated by serving the summonses.

Elgin Mayor has been supportive of the process since the beginning.“Gangs cause tremendous problems for cities and neighborhoods across the state. Local ini-

tiatives like this provide law enforcement with the necessary means to stop crime before it happens,” Schock said.

The lawsuit was filed under the auspices of the 1993 Illinois Streetgang Terrorism Omnibus Prevention Act, which holds that street gangs operate to terrorize communities with repeated acts of violence.

The act states that street gangs represent clear and present danger to public order and safety and are not constitutionally protected.

GENEVA – El fiscal del Condado de Kane ha demandado a docenas de miembros de la pandilla Latin Kings de Elgin en un esfuerzo por proteger a los residentes de la ciudad.

La demanda fue interpuesta el 8 de septiem-bre n un corte civil del Condado de Kane. En ella se menciona a 81 miembros de los Latin Kings y a la pandilla. Esta demanda busca prohibir que los pandilleros se reúnan en lu-gares públicos y aborda la posesión y uso de armas, marihuana y drogas ilícitas, grafiti, comportamiento violento y otras actividades asociadas generalmente con las pandillas.

Con esta demanda las autoridades buscan minimizar las actividades criminales de las pandillas, al limitar su capacidad para operar libremente.

La demanda busca alivio compensatorio y punitivo no especificado por daños en el pasado y por pérdidas financieras ocurridas como resultado del as actividades de las pan-dillas, además de para cubrir los gastos de la lucha contra las pandillas callejeras.

La demanda dice en parte lo siguiente: “Por medio de sus asociación con los Latin Kings, los miembros se involucran en un cur-

so o patrón de actividad criminal, incluyendo felonías, felonías agravadas, agresiones agra-vadas, posesión ilegal y uso de armas, pose-sión y entrega de substancias controladas, daño criminal a la propiedad y otra conducta injuriosa a la gente del estado de Illinois y del Estado de Elgin”.

Los pandilleros recibieron citatorios la se-mana del 6 de septiembre para que se presen-ten en la corte un día en particular entre el 4 y 7 de octubre, ante el juez de circuito Mi-chael J Colwell en la vieja corte de Geneva.

Elementos del Departamento de Policía de Elgin y el abogado Patrick Crimmins revisa-ron los expedientes criminales de cientos de pandilleros de Elgin para determinar quiénes iban a ser demandados. El Departamento del Alguacil del condado de Kane participó en la entrega de citatorios a pandilleros.

MEXICO CITY – With the ob-jective of giving Mexicans the op-portunity to celebrate the Bicenten-nial of the Independence of Mexico in a safe environment, the Mexico City government decided to spread out the celebration throughout Re-forma Avenue and at the Zocalo.

The official celebrations started at El Zocalo at 5 p.m. Sept. 15, with the lighting of the New Fire, a pre-Columbian tradition that signals the beginning of a new era.

To try to avoid a large concentra-tion of people and to keep things un-der control, Mexican authorities de-cided to limit the number of people that could enjoy the main celebra-tion at El Zocalo to 50,000.

The Mexico City Civil Protection Secretary Elias Miguel Moreno Bri-zuela announced authorities were using illuminated signs to let people know when venues were reaching their maximum capacity.

The celebrations also included a parade through Reforma Avenue, which included floats representing different stages of Mexico’s history, including the Independence, the pre-Columbian era, the Colony and popular culture.

Once the parade reached three monuments: the Column of the In-dependence, The Cuauhtémoc Mon-ument and the Caballito Monument, popular concerts started. Singers like Paulina Rubio, Erik Rubin, Los Tigres del Norte, Eugenia Leon, Ar-mando Manzanero, Aleks Syntek and Maldita Vecindad kept people entertained. The concerts ended at 2 a.m. Sept. 16, but they were inter-rupted at about 11 p.m., when all the sites were linked to the live broad-cast of the Cry of Independence from El Zocalo.

After the traditional ceremony

there was a spectacular fireworks display throughout Reforma Avenue and at El Zocalo.

Those who braved the crowds, organizers installed 47 big screens, some near El Zocalo, so people could see the ceremony.

Authorities indicated that only 900,000 people were allowed to enter the downtown zone and the Paseo de la Reforma area and they suggested people to stay at home and watch the celebrations via Internet.

The security operation set in mo-tion by authorities used more than 14,000 officers who kept things un-der control. Also the Mexico City Attorney General’s office mobilized 500 officers and installed nine pub-lic ministry desks to receive any complaints, and authorities said no incidents were reported.

In the morning of Sept. 16 Presi-dent Felipe Calderon headed the second ceremony of the Cry of In-dependence, this time in the town of Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, where priest Miguel Hidalgo started the fight for independence.

After the ceremony, Calderon returned to Mexico City, where he headed the military parade.

Military delegations from 17 countries took place in the parade: Spain, United States, France, Ger-many, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Chile, China, El Salva-dor, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicara-gua, Peru, Russia and Venezuela.

One of the highlights of the pa-rade was the participation of the air force, which had spectators in awe.

The celebration was more sub-dued in cities hard-hit by violence. In Ciudad Juarez the ceremony of the Cry of Independence was can-celled for the first time in the city’s history. However, people celebrated across the border in El Paso, with family and friends.

In Morelia, where a grenade at-tack that left eight people dead dur-ing the Independence Day celebra-tions in 2008, only 2,000 people attended the ceremony. In the past,

tens of thousands attended the cel-ebration.

Meanwhile, authorities in Cancun are still trying to determine if six men who were arrested with assault

rifles and grenades were planning on using them during the celebra-tions. And in the northern state of Nuevo Leon eight gunmen died in a shootout with police.

Mexico celebrates 200th birthday

MÉXICO, D.F. – Con el objetivo de dar a los mexicanos la oportuni-dad de celebrar el Bicentenario de la Independencia de México de forma segura, el gobierno de la Ciudad de México decidió instalar varios esce-narios en el Paseo de la Reforma y en el Zócalo.

Las celebraciones oficiales inicia-ron en el Zócalo a las 5 de la tarde del 15 de septiembre, con la ceremonia ritual del Fuego Nuevo, marcando el inicio de una nueva era.

Con el fin de evitar aglomera-ciones y mantener la situación bajo control, las autoridades mexicanas determinaron que solo 50 mil perso-nas tendrían acceso al Zócalo.

El secretario de Protección Civil del Distrito Federal, Elías Miguel Moreno Brizuela, dijo que se haría uso de anuncios luminosos para avi-sar a los asistentes sobre el cupo en los distintos espectáculos.

En la zona de Paseo de la Refor-ma se realizó un desfile que contó con carros alegóricos que represen-taron la Independencia, la época prehispánica, la colonia y la cultura popular.

Una vez que el desfile pasó por la Glorieta del Ángel de la Indepen-dencia, la Glorieta del monumento a Cuauhtémoc y la Glorieta del Ca-ballito dieron inicio tres conciertos multitudinarios que incluyeron a ar-tistas como Paulina Rubio, Erik Ru-bín, Los Tigres del Norte, Eugenia León, Armando Manzanero, Aleks Syntek y la Maldita Vecindad, entre otros. Los conciertos duraron has-ta las 2 de la mañana y solamente fueron interrumpidos para el enlace con el Zócalo para la transmisión en vivo del Grito de la Independencia.

Después de la ceremonia del Gri-to, se realizó un magnífico espec-táculo de fuegos pirotécnicos a lo largo del Paseo de la Reforma y en el Zócalo.

Para quienes se animaron a acu-dir a las celebraciones multitudina-rias, los organizadores instalaron 47 pantallas gigantes, algunas cerca del Zócalo, para que la gente pudiera ver los espectáculos.

Las autoridades indicaron que solo habría cupo para 900 mil per-sonas en la zona centro y del Paseo de la Reforma, por lo que sugirieron a los mexicanos que se quedaran en casa y vieran las celebraciones en televisión o por Internet.

En el operativo de seguridad pues-to en marcha por las autoridades de la capital, más de 14 mil elementos estuvieron en servicio para vigilar que las celebraciones se realizaran sin ningún incidente.

Además, la Procuraduría General de Justicia del Distrito Federal mo-vilizó a 500 elementos de la Policía Judicial y puso en funcionamiento nueve Ministerios Públicos para atender denuncias. Las autoridades reportaron saldo blanco de inciden-

tes.La mañana del 16 de septiembre

el presidente Felipe Calderon dirigió el segundo grito de independencia, esta vez en el pueblo de Dolores, Hidalgo, Guanajuato, lugar donde el cura Miguel Hidalgo dio inicio a la lucha por la independencia.

Después de dar el grito en Dolores Hidalgo, el presidente se trasladó de nuevo a la Ciudad de México, donde presidió el desfile militar.

En este desfile participaron tro-pas de 17 países: España, Estados Unidos, Francia, Alemania, Arenti-na, Brasil, Canadá, Colombia, Chi-le, China, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Perú, Rusia y Venezuela.

Uno de los puntos más atractivos del desfile militar fue el desfile aé-reo, recibido con excalamciones de asombro y admiración por parte de los espectadores.

En las ciudades donde la violen-cia está a la orden del día, las cele-

braciones fueron austeras. El grito fue cancelado en Ciudad Juárez por primera vez en la historia de esta ciudad. Sin embargo, el patriotismo fue demostrado en el Paso, donde pesronas se reunieron para celebrar la ocasión en familia.

En la ciudad de Morelia, donde se reigstró un ataque con granadas en la celebración de la indepen-dencia en el año 2008 la cual dejó ocho personas muertas, solamente asistieron a la celebración 2 mil per-sonas, cuando en años anteriores el número era de decenas de miles de personas.

Mientras tanto en Cancún auto-ridades están investigando si seis hombres que fueron detenidos con rifles ade asalto y granadas tenían planeado un ataque coincidiendo con las festividades. En el norteño estado de Nuevo León ocho pisto-leros murieron en un tiroteo con au-toridades.

La reportera de televisión Inés Sainz se vio envuelta en un inciden-te con algunos jugadores de los Jets de Nueva York en 11 de septiembre, un incidente que algunos consideran acoso sexual.

La reportera deportiva de 32 años de edad se unió a otros reporteros en el vestidor de los Jets para entrevis-tar al mariscal de campo Mark Sán-chez, quien es de ascendencia mexi-cana. De acuerdo a algunos testigos, algunos jugadores hicieron comen-tarios sexualmente sugestivos, algo que molestó a muchos, pero no a Sainz.

“Lo que ocurre ahí es que de pron-to los jugadores empiezan a hacer sus comentarios, pero la prensa que estábamos adentro de los lockers, pues recibíamos comentarios de tipo sexual”, dijo Sainz a la Agencia México. “Yo no quiero poner en mi boca las palabras que decían. Los demás medios estaban dentro, ellos escucharon cosas muy fuertes, pero yo honestamente jamás me percaté

de eso y si era un ambiente donde estaban alborotados, pero nada más. Lo tomé como un juego entre ellos, no lo tomé personal ni como agre-sión”.

Cuando el incidente sucedió, Sainz no le dio mucha importan-cia. Pero la Asociación de mujeres Periodistas de Estados Unidos se enteró del incidente y puso una que-ja como una agresión a la reportera como mujer y como profesional.

“La controversia se genera por-que aquí la Asociación de mujeres Periodistas lo toma como una ofen-sa a las reporteras y sienten que le comportamiento de los jugadores fue inapropiado, porque tienen que tener cierta línea de respeto, en-tonces ellos levantan la denuncia, yo solamente soy parte de ella, ni siquiera había hablado del tema”, explicó.

Mientras que Sainz no le dio mu-cha importancia al incidente en un principio, aparentemente la presión que sufrió cuando el incidente se hizo público la hizo cambiar de opi-nión.

“Sentí que el ambiente fue incó-modo porque sabía que estaban ha-blando de mí y entonces hice como que nada pasaba, pero el ambiente es grosero para una mujer. No es bueno que estas cosas pasen”, dijo, agregando que dejará que la investi-gación siga su curso y ella dará sus pruebas. “Fui una testigo y prefiero que ellos, quienes tienen todas las piezas juntas, incluyendo mi mate-rial, sean quienes decidan si ocurrió o no esa situación. Ellos son muy profesionales y están tomando esto

seriamente”.Al ser informado del incidente, el

dueño de los Jets Woody Johnson se disculpó con la reportera y dijo que iniciaría una investigación para de-terminar si los jugadores se habían comportado de una forma inapro-piada y para establecer quién es el responsable del incidente. El entre-nador de los Jets Rex Ryan dijo que los representantes de la liga han ha-blado con algunos jugadores como parte de la investigación.

Después del incidente los oficia-

les de la NFL enviaron un memo-rándum a los 32 equipos de la liga estableciendo que las mujeres un acceso igualitario y la liga tiene una política al respecto.

“Las mujeres son una parte co-mún de los medios en los deportes”, dice el memorándum. “Por ley, las mujeres deben recibir los mismos derechos para realizar su trabajo que los hombres. Por favor recuer-den que las mujeres reporteras son profesionales y deben ser tratadas como tal”.

TV Azteca reporter harassed by NFL players

was involved in an incident with New York Jets players on Sept. 11, which some have considered a sex-ual harassment incident.

The 32 year-old sports reporter joined several other reporters in the Jets’ locker room, to interview quarterback Mark Sanchez, who is of Mexican descent. According to some witnesses several players made comments charged with sex-ual innuendo, something that both-ered some, except Sainz.

“What happens here is that play-ers start making comments, but we reporters who were in the locker room were receiving sexually-charged comments. I don’t want to say what they were saying. All the other media were inside, they heard very strong things, but I honestly never noticed that and yes, they were excited but nothing else,” Sainz told Agencia Mexico. “I took it as a game amongst them; I didn’t take it personally or as an aggression.”

When the incident first occurred

Sainz didn’t give it much thought. But the Association of Women Jour-nalists in the United States found out about the incident and filed a complaint as an aggression to the reporter as a woman and as a pro-fessional.

“The controversy happened be-cause here the Association of Wom-en Journalists took it as something offensive for female reporters and they feel the players’ behavior was inappropriate, because they have to follow certain rules, and then they file a complaint, I’m only part of it, but I haven’t said anything about the issue,” Sainz said.

While Sainz at first didn’t think the incident granted much attention, apparently the pressure she was un-der after the incident was made pub-lic made her change her opinion.

“I felt the atmosphere was un-comfortable because they were talk-ing about me, but then I pretended nothing was going on, but the atmo-sphere was aggressive for a woman. Something like this is not good,” Sainz said, adding that she will let

the investigation run its course and that she will provide her proofs. “I was a witness and I’d rather have them, those who have all the pieces of the puzzle together, including my material, to decide if this happened or not. They are very professional and are taking this seriously.”

Upon learning of the incident, team owner Woody Johnson apolo-gized to the reporter and said they would initiate an investigation to determine if the players behaved inappropriately and to establish who was responsible for the incident. Jets coach Rex Ryan said league repre-sentatives have spoken with some players as part of the investigation.

Following the incident, the NFL sent a memo to all 32 teams in the league that they have an equal access and conduct policy toward the media.

“Women are a common part of the sports media,” said the statement. “By law, women must be granted the same rights to perform their jobs as men. Please remember that women reporters are professionals and should be treated as such.”

CD. DE MÉXICO – Vicente Fernández, el ‘macho’ latinoamericano por excelencia, ha sorprendido a muchos al defender a las parejas del mismo sexo y el derecho de las parejas homosexuales de adoptar niños.

“Dicen que es prohibido o que se ve mal que un matrimonio de homosexuales adop-te a un niño, pero prefiero que los adopten donde haya amor y no a que anden en los drenajes y entre las ratas, sin comer, todos viciosos”, declaró.

Fernández dijo que su punto de vista es

opuesto al de Paquita la del Barrio, quien hace unos meses hizo comentarios en contra de las adopciones de parejas homosexuales. Fernández dijo admirar a las parejas homo-sexuales que pueden ofrecerles un hogar a los niños.

También hizo un llamado para que la gente sea más tolerante con la gente homosexual.

“Pienso que son seres humanos que no pi-dieron nacer así y hay que mirar bien lo que uno dice porque tarde o temprano se puede uno morder la lengua porque vienen nietos, vienen bisnietos y uno no sabe”.

MEXICO CITY – Vicente Fernandez, the epitome of a ‘macho’ man in Latin America, has surprised many by defending same sex marriages and the right of gay couples to adopt children.

“They say it’s prohibited or that it’s wrong for a homosexual couple to adopt a child, but I’d rather have children adopted in a home where there’s love and not in the sewers, with the rats, without food and in drugs,” the singer said.

He said his way of thinking is the opposite of Paquita la del Barrio, who a few months ago made comments against adoptions by gay couples and that he admires gay couples that can offer a home to children.

He also made a request for people to be more tolerant with gay people.

“I think that they are human beings and they didn’t ask to be born like this. We have to watch what we say because sooner or later one has to eat his own words, because the grandchildren are coming, the great-grand-children and one never knows.”

LAS VEGAS – Después de casi dos años desde su últi-mo espectáculo y después de que aparentemente estuviera muy enfermo, Luis Miguel reapareció en Las Vegas para lanzar su nuevo disco y hablar sobre sus presentaciones.

Luis Miguel habló ante una audiencia de más de 80 perio-distas acreditados, empezan-do con un comentario para romper el hielo.

“Estoy encantado de estar aquí… y de estar vivo”, dijo.

Luis Miguel dijo que mien-tras que quería agradecer a los medios por el apoyo reci-bido durante su enfermedad,

también quería denunciar a los medios que usaron su en-fermedad para vender más.

“Si el público me lo per-mite, me gustaría entregarles muchos más años de mi mú-sica”, dijo.

También comentó que mientras que algunos medios habían esparcido el rumor de que había muerto, él se en-contraba de vacaciones. “Mu-cha gente dijo que estaba en el más allá (muerto)… pero estaba en Bora Bora”, dijo.

Sobre su último material discográfico, el cantante se mostró entusiasmado y dijo que a pesar de las críticas es-taba complacido. “Todos los discos son especiales pero

este nuevo para mi es un gran paso”.

Él también agradeció a sus fanáticos, quienes crearon ca-denas de oración para que el cantante recuperara la salud. “Quiero mandar un mensaje bien claro a mis fans: no de-ben creer nada de lo que oyen y escuchan. Se crean tantas cosas a mi alrededor, de mi persona, que no estoy para salir y aclarar nada. Sería caer en su juego y mañana pueden inventar otra cosa. Tengo que ser inteligente”.

Luis Miguel tiene algunos conciertos programados en Las Vegas en honor del 200 aniversario de la Independen-cia de México.

LAS VEGAS – Almost two years after his latest show and after supposedly being very ill, Luis Miguel reappeared in Las Vegas to launch his new CD and talk about his show.

Luis Miguel spoke before an audience of over 80 accredited journalists, starting with a sentence to break the ice. “I’m glad to be here … and to be alive.,” he said.

Luis Miguel said that while he wanted to thank the media for the support he received throughout his health scare, he also wanted to denounce the media who used his illness to sell magazines.

“If the audience allow me, I’d like to give them my music for many years,” Luis Miguel said.

He also stated that while some media had spread the rumor that he was dead, he was on

vacation. “Many people said I was in the other side (dead)… but I was in Bora Bora.”

About his latest CD, the singer was very en-thusiastic about it and while he has received sev-eral negative comments, he said that “all record-ings are special but this new one is a big step for me.”

He also thanked fans, who created prayer chains to make the singer feel better. “I want to send a message to my fans: don’t believe any-thing you hear. There are so many things said about me, and I’m not going to come out and say anything. It would be to go along with them and tomorrow they can say another thing. I have to be intelligent.”

Luis Miguel had some concerts scheduled in Las Vegas in honor of the 200th Anniversary of the Independence of Mexico.
