    MARKYOUR CALENDAR

    SKEET SHOOT Alvord FFA will have a skeet shoot starting

    at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Oak Hill MX Park, County Road

    1270 between Alvord and Decatur. The event will also have a

    .22-caliber rifle giveaway, raffles, an auction and other prizes.

    CHICOFEST Chicofest is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct.

    17, at Chico square. Booths can be rented for $5 or $10 with

    electricity by calling (940) 644-2515. The event will include a

    cake walk, horseshoes, a beauty pageant featuring Chico High

    School boys at 11 a.m. and bingo at 1 p.m. A picnic will follow

    Chicofest in the park.

    FALL FEST Alvords Fall Fest is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.Saturday, Oct. 17, in downtown Alvord. To reserve a booth, call

    city hall at (940) 427-5916.

    BOOK SALE The Chico Library is having an ongoing book

    sale during library hours, 1 to 6 p.m. Monday and Friday, 1 to 5

    p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

    LIBRARY HOURS The Alvord Public Library is open 9

    a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noonSaturdays.

    ONTHE COVER

    The Alvord School Board

    approved the budget and tax rate

    for the 2009-2010 school year at

    the Aug. 27 meeting.

    Members approved a budget

    of $8,436,704 for the fiscal

    year, compared to a budget of

    $13,419,350 last year.

    The board approved a tax rate

    of $1.34, the same rate as the

    previous year.

    ay to cool off on a sweltering afternoon.At The Old Drugstore in Chico, Minnie

    Jennings makes the perfect accompaniment

    to a good air conditioner a traditionalbanana split. Jennings said the treat isordered year round and is a good dessert tosplit with a friend.

    Split the banana in half and place in a bowl. Put
