For your best weaving experience (and in consideration of others in the class), PLEASE select classes consistent with your skill level for that particular medium (i.e., reed, ash, Nantuckets, willow…) These guidelines should help you decide:

Beginner: You may have woven a few baskets but you still need practice with basic weaving techniques and shaping.

Advanced Beginner: You have a basic understanding of twining, start/stop weaving, and lashing.

Intermediate: You can easily begin a basket. You want to learn and/or practice a new technique.

Advanced: You are an accomplished weaver looking for new techniques and materials.

If you do not have a class on a specific day, you may have an opportunity to take a class—check available openings on the Odyssey website and contact the registrar as soon as possible to reserve.

DO NOT ASK teachers to join their class during Odyssey if there is a last-minute vacancy. Only the registrar, Dianne Pearce, has authority to add students to a class. Switching classes after assignments are made is NOT permitted even if there is an opening in another class.

Include a self-addressed, stamped #10 business size envelope. This envelope will be used to mail your class assignments and payment instructions. Don’t forget the stamped envelope or your confirmation will be delayed until stamped envelope is received by the registrar. (Please do not ask the registrar to address, mail and stamp an envelope for you. With more than a hundred registrants, that task can be daunting in itself!)

Use this checklist to make sure you did not forget to include:

2020 A WEAVING ODYSSEY

INSTRUCTORS

Mary Annunziato Jackie Burke Havre de Grace, Maryland Belair, Maryland [email protected] For the past five years, Mary and Jackie have partnered as “Wooly Pines,” creating and teaching their own beautiful design of the wool tree. Naturally they have “branched out” to new and exclusively designed lavender, willows, wreaths, and flowers. Their teaching has taken them to many states to teach at basket guilds, and quilt, fiber and wool shops. Jackie, a retiree from the Department of Defense after 37 years of service, has over 30 years of experience in decorative painting, and continues to enjoy making rag quilts, wool projects, and gourd art. Mary, mother of three, also has over 30 years of experience in painting and also enjoys hand sewing and basket making. Candy Barnes Shepherdstown, WV [email protected] Candy grew up a Navy brat and met Dave on a sailing date in New London, CT. She has always been involved with crafts, starting out with sewing, knitting and needlepoint. After a basket-making class, she found her art form. The challenge of consistent form and symmetry, married with Dave’s woodwork, is what she enjoys the most. Jan Beyma Wilmington, North Carolina [email protected] I have been teaching and weaving baskets for over 25 years. I have taught at, NCBA, GBA, KBA, Odyssey, Stateline, Guilders Weave, TBA, Oklahoma and MBO conventions, seminars and for our local Port City Guild. I enjoy weaving Nantucket baskets. I love to stimulate the interest of basket weaving and sharing weaving tips with others that I’ve learned over the years, while also learning new tips from my students. I consider myself a non-traditional Nantucket weaver as I find common items to use as molds for my classes and I usually will incorporate a twill weave of some kind into my baskets. All the wood parts on my baskets are made by my husband. We work as a team creating the baskets. Anne Bowers Kearneysville, WV [email protected] Anne is from the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia where she works in her studio designing and teaching baskets. She was a production basket maker for many years and she brings those skills into each basket that she teaches. Ribbed basketry is her specialty, and some of her baskets have taken on a sculptural perspective in recent years. Anne has participated in many basketry exhibits and shows winning many awards for her work. This past year she produced a few baskets on huge moose antlers to

12

be used by a floral designer for the Philadelphia Flower Show. She is a member of the National Basketry Organization. She has taught on 3 basketry cruises, teaches basketry widely and lectures about the woven form. She is in her 38th year of weaving and is still fascinated with the woven form. This coming fall will mark her 31st year of participation in the annual Over the Mountain Studio Tour. Her goal is to make each student’s class a successful one. Char Ciammaichella Aurora, OH [email protected] Char has been weaving for over 30 years and teaching for the last 18 years. She weaves mainly with reed and loves playing with color placement to get many different and interesting patterns. She teaches at home, guild gatherings, and many weaving conventions. She loves teaching and passing down the weaving techniques to all. She has opened her website www.charsweavings.com to purchase basket kits and basket related jewelry, and is constantly trying new techniques, colors and ideas! The love of working with silver evolved into teaching weaving jump rings together to make beautiful bracelets. She has also taken an interest in lapidary. She uses her rocks to start pine needle basket coiling of needles she picks up while riding her bike in Florida! The cabochons are also made into beautiful necklaces. Dianne Gleixner Brookfield, Wisconsin [email protected] Dianne began weaving baskets in 1987 and teaching in 2004. She enjoys weaving ribbed baskets, Nantucket style baskets, twills and anything else with a challenge. She has written and published over 100 patterns. Dianne has taught in many state guilds and conventions. She is honored that her baskets have won numerous awards at basket weaving conventions around the country.

Billy Owens Jenkins, Missouri [email protected] Billy Owens is the second generation of the “Owens” White Oak basket makers. His dad, Dale Owens, was self-taught and the first basket maker in the family. His wife, Theresa, as well as the children and grandchildren (the third and fourth generation) help with the weaving. “Owens Oak Baskets” has been around for over 30 years in the Ozarks of Southwestern Missouri. All the basket material used is made from White Oak timber grown in the Ozarks, which Billy selects, cuts and prepares by hand using a homemade hand tool, made by his Dad, called a “Split Knife”. Billy has taught at conventions and workshops all over the United States. He enjoys sharing with his students everything about the Ozark and Owens method of “White Oak” basketry, from selecting the right tree to how he prepares the material for weaving. It is his goal when he teaches that first and foremost everyone leaves with a finished basket that will last a lifetime.

Kathleen Petronzio Beverly, MA [email protected] Kathy started weaving at a local class while living in South Carolina and fell in love with basketry. She quickly expanded her education while in Japan on deployment with her husband and sons. She was invited to study with local weavers and soon began actively teaching classes. She is influenced by her love of Japanese basketry as well as the beauty, tradition and usefulness of Nantucket and Shaker basketry. She has and continues to exhibit in shows across the northeastern U.S. and teaches in Massachusetts, Virginia and North Carolina. Linda Scherz Rome, NY [email protected] Linda started weaving baskets in the fall 1987 shortly after moving to Northern NY. Her interest in weaving quickly expanded to designing, teaching, exhibitions and juried shows. Linda enjoys working with a variety of materials, including reed, bark that she harvests, waxed linen, beads and other materials. While much was self-taught, she has attended conferences to learn other techniques and to work with other materials. Known for her intricate patterns, eye for color and incorporating different materials in her designs keeps it exciting for her. Linda has won several awards for her baskets. She teaches her designs throughout the United States for various guilds, conferences, art centers and organizations. You can see more on her website www.AdirondackBasketry.com Joyce B. Smith Kingsport, Tennessee [email protected] I have been weaving since 1988 and teaching for over 25 years. I prefer teaching and working with black ash and Shaker baskets. I also teach Nantucket style baskets, enjoy working and teaching with copper, red cedar and birch barks. My favorite baskets are miniatures. Bill & Charlene White New Bern, NC [email protected] Charlene and Bill have taught for NCBA Conventions and Seminars for about 34 years. Bill is a past NCBA Board Member and photographer for multiple conventions and seminars. Charlene is current NCBA Secretary. She served as co-chair for three Conventions, as a committee member on the 2020 NCBA Convention and as coordinator of numerous seminars. They both served as the 2008 Convention coordinators. Bill is best known for designing and making all their molds and working parts for the Whites’ classes. They have taught at other state conventions such as Indiana and Georgia. Both enjoy working together on their Nantucket designs. They also enjoy making other style baskets but Nantucket baskets are their passion.
