LIFE TOGETHER

ST. JEAN VIANNEY CATHOLIC PRESCHOOL

The preschool is accepting applications for the 2012-2013 school year. Our program is in operation Monday through Friday 9:00am to 2:00pm.Classes are being offered for two, three, and four year old students. Parents also have an option of “Preschool Plus”, an extended day program. Preschool Plus is available mornings from 7:25am to 9:00am and afternoons from 2:00pm to 3:00pm. Applications may be picked up in the preschool office or downloaded from the preschool website. www.stjeanvianneypreschool.org. For more information call the office at 752-5356.

Dear Friends: Our campus is back in full swing with many activities going on! Our preschoolers have adapted well to their new schedule. I heard many of the children saying how much they “missed” preschool while being out for the hurricane. The students at SJV are busy with cheer practice, drama club and all the extra activities that incorporate their talents! Teachers are back to their routine of preparing lessons and correcting papers! Our Religious Education program kicks off this weekend and those that attend public or private schools will gather to learn more about their faith and how to apply what they learn in their everyday lives. Our youth groups, both middle and high school, gear up to meet with old and new friends as they share their faith in unconventional ways. Next Saturday, our scouts have an exciting day planned as they launch rockets while gathering as a Pack in Fr. Engel’s Hall! Wow, what an enthusiastic and energetic community we have! This weekend, we also celebrate Catechetical Sunday. We are blessed at SJV to have so many people who are willing to come forward and share their faith with others. Catechists not only teach the Catholic faith, they help others develop their faith and deepen their relationship with God, our Father. Thank you for answering the call to pass on your faith to others in our parish! In today’s gospel, Jesus teaches us that the Son of Man must suffer and die. He goes on to say that if we wish to follow him we too must deny ourselves and take up the cross. Today’s society teaches us to value so many things that are not really necessary. I think we all should take a few moments this week to reflect on this scripture and identify ways we could build up the kingdom of God by letting some of these things go. Continue to pray for our parish community and know that we, as a parish staff, remember you in our prayers also. God Bless all of you and your families. Peace, Denise Louviere, D.R.E.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY NEWS Longing to Lead an Extraordinary Life? Yes, it is 30 weeks of learning, experiencing, and growing in faith and compassion – a lively and challenging encounter that can change your life. Contact Lori, 753.7950, to participate. A REFLECTION ON THIS WEEK’S READINGS FAITH TO DEEDS In today’s second reading James compares two kinds of faith, a dead faith and a faith that is alive and active. As he makes perfectly clear, if we come across people who are starving and cold it is simply not enough to wish them well and go on our way. Mark and Isabel decided to teach their children that the only way to respond to need is to do small things consistently. The children were 7, 10, and 13, so they were old enough to understand when the family sat down to talk things through. Isabel said, “We go to Mass every Sunday, we pray together at home, and we do things in our parish, but what else can we do to show Jesus how much we love him?” The younger son suggested, “Do our chores on time!” “That’s good,” said Mark, “but what can we do for other people?” “You mean people who are sick or hungry?” asked their daughter. “Yes,” said Isabel, “or people who have no job or no home.” After a lot of talking, the children decided they would save half of their pocket money and the parents would equal that amount. At the end of the month they would de-cide what to do with it. After searching on the com-puter for ideas, they decided to help a shelter for homeless families trying to regain independence. The whole family went to give their gift to the direc-tor. She thanked them and asked, “Would you like to meet some of our residents?” It was just after din-ner so children were doing homework while parents chatted about their job searches. On the way home the younger son said, “They were really nice people. Can we go on helping them?” “Yes,” said Isabel. “We’ve only just begun.” Copyright © 2011, World Library Publications. AWAKENING FAITH—SPAGHETTI DINNER SEPTEMBER 23, 2012 following 5:30 mass

“No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine.” John 15: 4 It is not unusual that as our professional life takes off and crowds our time for developing a loving relationship with God. The Awaken Faith ministry at St. Jean Vianney helps remind us of God’s desire to have a loving relationship with each of us. Have you been away from the practice of the Catholic Faith? Come visit with us over coffee at CC’s on Coursey Blvd., 6:30 p.m. every Monday. Better yet, come for a fun evening of food and fellowship planned for September 23, 2012 at the Fr. Engels Hall following 5:30 mass. Do you know of a family member, friend, or neighbor who might like to reconnect with their Catholic roots? Speak up, get the word out to them! ….and pray for the ministry that we “consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing. But let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10:14-15 For information and RSVP for September 23, 2012, contact Jim at [email protected], Cathy at [email protected], Kris at [email protected], Earl at [email protected], Gus & Janet at [email protected]
