TheNewiPhonesAreHere:ShouldYouBuythe8Now,orWaitfortheXinNovember?OnTuesday,Applelaunchednotonelong-anticipatednewiPhone—buttwo—whosespecificationsfellgenerallyinlinewithrumorsandindustrywatchers’expectations.Therearesomanypartnersandsuppliersinvolvedinthecreationofanynewgenerationofphones(includinganarmyoftalkativeworkersatApple’scontractmanufacturersinChina)thatitisnearlyimpossibletokeepthedetailsofsuchahotlyanticipated,high-volumenewproductunderwraps.Nottomentionthatlastweekend,anAppleemployeeleakedthelatestbetaversionoftheaccompanyingiOS11software,whichcontainedmanyofthedetailsofthenewproductreleases.
AswithpracticallyeverynewiterationoftheiPhone,thenewmodelsfeaturesharperdisplays,fasterprocessors,bettercamerasandmorememory,andApplestrivestomakeeachnewiPhonethinnerthanthelast.Bothnewmodelssupportwirelesscharging(usingtheQistandard)andruniOS11,whichincludesApple’sARKitsoftware,whichwillenableaslewofaugmented-realityapplicationsandgames.IKEAisalreadyworkingonanappusingARKitthatwillallowcustomerstovisualizehowthecompany’sfurniturelooksintheirlivingspaces.Applecallsitsnew-generationprocessorA11Bionic,anhomagetothesuperstrengthoftheman-machinecombointhe70sTVshowTheSixMillionDollarMan,andthenewphonesalsocontainanewgraphicchiptohelpsharetheload.
