September 13, 2018 No. 37 Youth Taking the Reins Ali Chappell DeHay “This world demands the qualities of youth: not a time of life but a state of mind, a temper of the will, a quality of imagination, a predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease.” — Robert Kennedy. Mid-August, the “Youth Student Leadership Team” was formed. Six students, grades 10 – 12 make up the team, and this group will help me and our Youth Committee to brainstorm activities, plan certain events, and help lead in the youth ministry. They are also a key component of welcoming students who might be new to the youth group or new to church in general. While these students will help to accomplish general youth ministry task, they are more than just students chipping in to get things done. This group is and will be a means by which our group dreams God-sized dreams and a way God’s Spirit to move among our youth ministry. The students serving on the team are dedicated to furthering Calvary’s already vibrant youth ministry, and have certainly been means by which I’ve seen God’s presence in and among our church family. Harper Singletary (10th Grade) Anna Weaver (10th Grade) Calvary’s youth group is a place and a people richin love, kindness, and laughter, and RobertKennedy was spot on when he shared the meritsof youth that the world so desperately needs. Ibelieve that all of our youth, not just the lead team, possess these qualities Kennedy mentions, andmy prayer is that the Student Lead Team will be aplace where these merits can be celebrated foryears to come. Join me in this prayer and checkout the “Calvary Baptist Youth” Facebook page tosee “Student Lead Team Spotlights” everyThursday for the next five weeks.

Book Club: Getting Involved with God: Rediscovering the Old Testament This fall, Chad Eggleston will be leading a book club discussion on Wednesdaynights about the book Getting Involved with God. The author, Ellen Davis, writes,"This is a book about getting, and staying, involved with God—what it takes, what itcosts, what it looks and feels like, why anyone would want to do it anyway. It is at thesame time a book about reading the Old Testament as a source of Good News andguidance for our life with God. The key piece of Good News that the Old Testamentcommunicates over and over again is that God is involved with us, deeply andirrevocably so.” We hope you'll consider joining us on Wednesdays at 6 PM!
