HOLY CROSS IS THE SIGN OF GOD’S LOVE
Dearest Brothers andSisters,
Grace toyouandpeace fromGodour Father and theLordJesus Christ.
On September 14th theCatholic Church celebratestheFeast of theExaltationofthe Cross of Christ. Thecrucified Christ is lifted upby faith in the hearts of allwho believe, and he too liftsup those same hearts with ahope that cannot bedestroyed. For the Cross isthe sign of the Redemption, and in the Redemption iscontained the pledge ofresurrection and thebeginning of new life: the lifting up of human hearts.
This Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross began as acommemoration of a unique event: the miraculousfinding of the True Cross by St. Helena, the mother ofEmperorConstantine.Helena journeyed to theHolyLandto see the place of the Lord’s Crucifixion. She found thespot and tore down a temple she found there honoring the
Greek goddess, Aphrodite, and she began to build a newbasilica in honor of Christ. As they began to lay the
foundation, the remains ofthree crosses werediscovered, but they did notknow which was the trueCross. The Cross of Christwas eventually revealedwhena dying woman was healedafter touching one of thecrosses. The basilica wascompleted, and the Church inboth East and West observesthis feast in honor of theCrosson the anniversary ofdedication.I would like to reflect withyou through the extracts fromahomily bySt. JohnPaul II onthe Feast of the Exaltation ofthe Cross in 1984: “Why arethe Cross and the Crucified
One the doorway to eternal life? Because in him - Christcrucified - is manifested to the full the love of God for theworld, forman. In the sameconversationwithNicodemusChrist says: "God loved theworld somuch that hegavehisonly Son, so that everyone who believes in him may notbe lost butmay have eternal life. ForGod sent his Son intothe world, not to condemn the world, but so that throughhim the world might be saved" Jn. 3:16-17.

Pastor's Weekly Reflection - continuedThe salvific lifting up of the Son of God on the Cross hasits eternal source in love. This is the love of theFather thatsends the Son; he gives his Son for the salvation of theworld. And at the same time it is the love of the Son whodoes not "judge" the world, but gives himself for the loveof the Father and for the salvation of the world. Givinghimself to theFather through theSacrifice of theCross, he giveshimself at the sametime to the world: toeach person and tothe whole ofhumanity. The Cross containsin itself the mysteryof salvation, because, in theCross, Love is liftedup. This is the liftingup of Love to thesupremepoint in thehistory of theworld:in theCross, Love islifted up and theCross is at the sametime lifted upthrough Love. Andfrom the height ofthe Cross, lovecomes down to us. Yes: "The Cross is the most profoundcondescension ofGod toman . . . TheCross is like a touchof eternal love upon the most painful wounds of man’sexistence" (St. John Paul II, Dives in Misericordia 8).To the event of John’sGospel the Liturgy of today’s feastadds the presentation made by Paul in his Letter to thePhilippians. TheApostle speaks of an emptying of Christthrough the Cross; and at the same time of Christ’s beinglifted up above all things - and this too had its beginningin the same Cross: "Christ Jesus . . . emptied himself toassume the condition of a slave, and became as menare…..even to accepting death, death on a cross. But Godraised him high and gave him the namewhich is above allother names, so that all beings in theheavens, on earth andin the underworld, should bend the knee at the name of
Jesus, and that every tongue should acclaim Jesus Christas Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Phil. 2, 6-11).The Cross is the sign of the deepest humiliation of Christ. In the eyes of the people of that time it was the sign of aninfamous death. Free men could not be punished with
such a death, onlyslaves, Christwillingly acceptsthis death, death onthe Cross. Yet thisdeath becomes thebeginning of theResurrection. Inthe Resurrectionthe crucifiedServant of Yahwehis lifted up: he islifted up before thewhole ofcreation. At thesame time theCross is also liftedup. It ceases to bethe sign ofinfamous deathand becomes thesign ofresurrection, thatis, of life. Throughthe sign of theCross it is not the
servant or the slave who is speaking, but the Lord of allcreation.”Friends, the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ stands as, in asense, the pole of the world, or the focal point, certainlyof our lives asChristians. To itwe come and through itwehave access to the Lord’s Resurrection and our own. Thisis a deepmystery and a cause for rejoicing, that bymeansof something so horrible we receive so great a treasure:The Risen Lord who even now offers us his Body andBlood.Maywe find healing and redemption in himalone. Many blessings,

Mary's love for mankind is great because she loves us as God loves us. Her love for us is shown beautifully in her SevenSorrows. Tradition says that Mary’s heart was pierced seven times with seven swords of sorrow. This constitutes herseven dolours. St. Paul tells us that we cannot be partakers of His Glory unless we partake in His crucifixion. Being the
Mother of God has made Mary no less exempt from this law of sacrifice.
The seven swords that pierced the Immaculate Heart of Our Heavenly Mother are:
1) Simeon’s Prophecy, proclaiming her child destined to be the downfall and riseof many in Israel
2) The flight of the Holy Family into Egypt
3) The three days loss and finding the child Jesus in the temple
4) Mary's meeting of Jesus on his way to Calvary
5) Mary's standing at the foot of the cross when our Lord was crucified
6) Mary's holding of Jesus when He was taken down from the cross
7) Our Lord's burial
Mary’s heart was one with her Divine Son’s Heart. Her sorrow was not for what shesuffered, but for what He had to suffer. Love never thinks of itself. If Jesus belongedto the sinner, then so would she.
