Winterizing -Are You Ready for Cold Weather? Fall is the time to prepare for winter—cold and wet conditions not only make you miserable, but they can damage your home. Some winterizing can wait, some can’t. Make a list of what needs to be done, and tackle the time-sensitive tasks first. Here’s a simple checklist from the association to help you get a jump on winter: Indoor Winterizing
Examine doors and replace weather-stripping as needed. Examine window caulking and reseal where needed. Examine and repair vents where needed. Clean chimneys and flues. Remove items near heat vents. Place nonskid runners or door mats outside to help keep wa-ter, sand and salt out of the house.
Outdoor Winterizing
Cut back tree branches and shrubs that hide signs or block light. Examine outdoor handrails and tighten if needed. Turn off electrical breakers for outdoor equipment. Close hose bibs. Clean out gutters and downspouts. Clear yard drains. Spray outdoor locks and hinges with lubricant. Stake driveway and walkway edges that may be difficult to find under deep snow.
Assemble, stockpile or refresh winter supplies:
Batteries Candles and matches Ice melt and deicer Sand Snow shovels Generator fuel Antifreeze

SURFSIDE DEPUTY REPORT
DEPUTY T. OSTGAARD
SEPTEMBER 4th, 2014 – SEPTEMBER 10th, 2014
On 09/04 I was in the business office when someone reported a deer had been hit in the
29700th block of I Street. I located the deceased deer in the area. The reporting party stated
that the car that had hit the deer did not stop. Gil Gonzalez came with the backhoe and re-
moved the deer carcass.
On 09/05 I was dispatched to the 30200th block of X Place for the report of a noise complaint.
I contacted the reporting party and he stated his neighbors’ motion alarm keeps going off. He
advised me he had already contacted the business office to file a complaint and I advised him
he could contact DCD to file a complaint there too.
On 09/06 I was dispatched to the 34200th block of G Street for the report of a domestic vio-
lence complaint. I contacted the victim and he stated his wife had assaulted him with a coffee
cup and broke the tail lights on his vehicle. The victim stated he had filed for divorce from
his wife, and she had shown up and started causing problems. The suspect left before I ar-
rived and I was unable to locate her. The case will be filed with the prosecutors office.

E9-1-1 Emergency Response Exercise Successful FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - September 10, 2014 – 1:00 p.m.

E9-1-1 Emergency Response Exercise Successful
South Bend, Washington – A Telecommunicator Emergency Response Taskforce exercise, the first of its
kind in the nation, was conducted Friday, September 5th through Saturday September 6th, as part of the
Pacific County Communications Center response to the Rod Run to the End of the World.
Sheriff Scott Johnson met and welcomed all the TERT members participating and stated, “Pacific County is
pleased to be involved in an exercise of this magnitude and is grateful for the assistance provided and the
opportunity to participate”.
In the aftermath of man-made and natural disasters that devastated many areas of our country, public safe-
ty communications centers have faced tremendous challenges. One of the greatest challenges was maintain-
ing adequate staffing levels of the involved communications centers. To address this problem the associa-
tions of APCO International and the National Emergency Number Association joined hands to develop the
Telecommunicator Emergency Response Taskforce (TERT). TERT involves a comprehensive program
that has led to the establishment of predetermined and selected trained teams of individuals who can be mo-
bilized quickly and deployed to assist communications centers during disasters or large incidents.
The Washington State TERT program deployed four telecommunicators and one team leader to Pacific
County in support of Rod Run as an exercise event. Pacific County telecommunicators stood by as resource
staff while the deployed fielded both 9-1-1 and officer generated calls for service in this first ever exercise
using a real world incident. As Cory Ahrens, the Washington State TERT Committee Chair, stated, “It
would be impossible to simulate such an event and this has provided us with invaluable information and ed-
ucation.” The TERT team assisted Pacific County in the entry and handling of over 700 law, fire, and EMS
incidents throughout the weekend. TERT members responding in the exercise hailed from King County
Sheriff’s Office, NORCOM (Bellevue 9-1-1), CENCOM (Kitsap County 9-1-1), Okanogan County Sheriff’s
Office, and Spokane 9-1-1.
The exercise was successful in that both the deployed TERT members and the receiving agency, Pacific
County, learned some invaluable lessons regarding what may happen during an actual event. As a result,
both local and state plans will be revised and a “lessons learned” presentation will be provided other com-
munications centers throughout the state. In addition, future exercises are being planned in order to test ca-
pabilities and additional identify areas for improvement.
