A Time for All Things Faithful and gracious even in illness, Fr. Agus n has requested to celebrate one more Mass here with the people he loved so much before he becomes too weak to do so. What a fi ng thing, for someone so in love with Christ and His Church, to want to share one more moment of in mate communion in Holy Communion. Bishop Vann will preside at the Mass, slated for Saturday, September 24 at 9:30 a.m., which will also be a ended by visi ng priests. Whether you can a end or not, please keep Fr. Agus n in prayer during this final stage of his journey home to the Lord.

What a Zoo! School started up again and all I can say is, heads up in the parking lot! Between the newcomers ge ng accustomed to it and returning families reacquain ng themselves with the traffic flow, we've had to keep our heads on a swivel these first few days. As

me goes on, of course, everyone will get back into the rou ne, but be vigilant, especially now that the children are back on campus. Think safety!

Stay Tuned Effec ve immediately, we begin having daily Exposi on of the Blessed Sacrament Monday through Friday, between the two morning Masses. If you currently a end one of the daily liturgies, you might consider carving out a few extra minutes a er the 6:15 or before the 8:30 to visit the Lord. From the standpoint of worship protocol, this means a few things will change. First, the priest does not bless or dismiss at the end of the 6:15. With the Blessed Sacrament on the altar, he says a concluding prayer and exits in silence. Similarly, the assembly remains in silence as well, and when leaving, genuflects toward the altar instead of bowing. This is true for all who come in to church or exit during Exposi on. Before the 8:30, Father will simply repose the Blessed Sacrament back to the tabernacle then begin Mass in the usual way. This will also be done on our First Fridays as well. I'm hoping to also ins tute a weekly holy hour as well, along with a regular evening session for confessions. More on that as we figure out the details.

Respect Life Sunday Bishop Kevin Vann has designated Sunday, October 2, as Respect Life Sunday in the Diocese of Orange. We will celebrate our annual Pennies from Heaven campaign in early Ocotber (date to be determined). This campaign helps support the Pro-Life organiza ons in Orange County which provide medical services to expectant mothers, as well as food, lodging and training to women who chose life for their babies and have no place to stay. These local facili es are served by dedicated women and men. However, these facili es need your financial and prayer support. In following weeks, details about these local facili es will be included in our church bulle n, but you can also learn about them on the diocesan web site h ps://www.rcbo.org/resource/pennies-from-heaven/ or individual web sites like www.obria.org (Obria), and h p://www.casateresa.com/ (Casa Teresa), both located in city of Orange. Please take a few minutes to learn about these life-affirming organiza ons and support them, especially on Pennies from Heaven Sunday. _________________________________________________________________________________________________

Stewardship

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Jubilee Year of Mercy

When religious people complained that Jesus welcomed and ate with sinners, Jesus challenged them to change their image of God. Imagine God as a shepherd, abandoning ninety-nine obedient sheep to seek the stupid one who got lost. Imagine God as a distraught woman (could religious men imagine that?), losing something and turning the house upside down to find it. Imagine God as an uncondi onally forgiving father gran ng an unworthy son an undeserved feast. Then Jesus added a character whom religious people might imagine, even recognize, all too well. The elder son stayed home; obeyed the father’s will; then exploded with rage and judgment and refused to join his brother’s welcome-home feast. This Jubilee Year of Mercy asks, which half of Jesus’ audience do I belong to? How do I imagine God? How can I become like the searching shepherd, the sweeping woman, the forgiving father? How else can I expect a welcome to Jesus’ feast of forgiveness?

9/11 In remembering the fateful events of September 11, 2001, may we resolve to put aside our differences and join together in the task of renewing our na on and world. Let us make our own

the prayer of Pope Benedict XVI when he visited Ground Zero in New York in 2008:

O God of love, compassion, and healing, look on us, people of many different faiths and tradi ons, who gather today at this site, the scene of incredible violence and pain…. God of understanding, overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy, we seek your light and guidance as we confront such terrible events. Grant that those whose lives were spared may live so that the lives lost here may not have been lost in vain. Comfort and console us, strengthen us in hope, and give us the wisdom and courage to work relessly for a world where true peace and love reign among na ons and in the hearts of all.

What was happening in the Tenth Century? The legacy of the Holy Roman Empire, established by Charlemagne was a rocky one. Following Charlemagne’s death, his eldest son, Louis I, (the Pious,) was crowned Emperor by the Pope, but once Louis’ children had grown, conflict arose with the family as to who should become heir to the throne. For a me, Louis’ son Lothar I reigned as co-emperor with his father, but Lothar was deposed in 834, returning the reign to Louis I, who supported naming another son, Charles the Bald as co-Emperor. Lothar joined forces with his two full-brothers, Louis of Germany and Pippin of Aquitaine to oppose Charles. A er Louis’ death, in 840, Lothar assumed the role of Emperor for fi een years, but not without conflict. For three years, 840-843 the empire experienced civil war as Lothar’s full brother Louis now formed a coali on suppor ng Charles as the emperor. This warfare between the brothers caused division within

Faith Formation & Enrichment

the Holy Roman Empire that would lay the founda on for the future na ons of France and Germany as separate en es. As Emperor, Lothar issued a document defining the authority and power of both the Pope and the Emperor, giving the Emperor the higher ranking, in essence authority over the Pope.

Although ba les con nued among the descendants of Charlemagne, upon Lothar’s death, his son Louis II who had been named King of Italy at age fourteen by his grandfather Louis the Pious, became the Holy Roman Emperor in 855. Louis was followed by his half-uncle, Charles the Bald, a long me contender for the throne, in 875. Only one of Charles’ eight sons, Louis the Stu erer, outlived his father. Although he was crowned as King of Aquitaine and of West Francia, he never ruled over the united Empire. The throne of Emperor remained vacant from Charles’ death in 877, un l the corona on of his nephew, Charles the Fat, in 881. He would be the last Emperor of the direct Carolingian line to rule over a united kingdom. A er him, a variety kings of different dynas es aspired to the throne, most holding the rule for a very short period.

Berengar became King of Italy in 887. Although of another dynasty through his paternal ancestry, he was connected to the Carolingians through his mother, Gisela who was the daughter of Louis the Pious. A er serving for 28 years as King of Italy, Berengar was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope John X in 915, a tle he would hold for 9 years. He was known to be par cularly incompetent as a ruler, and died in 924 by poisoning by one of his own men. Berengar died with only one child, a daughter Bertha, who was an abbess. With no heir apparent, the throne of the Holy Roman Emperor would remain vacant for thirty-eight years.

As the Holy Roman Empire was breaking apart, the papacy too went through a period of decline in the tenth century. Of that century’s twenty-three Popes, ten of them had reigns las ng less than two years, with several only a few weeks. During this me, the ethics and morality of the papacy seriously declined. This was due in part to prominent families purchasing high ecclesias cal offices for their sons, nepo sm, or otherwise manipula ng church offices to be awarded to aristocra c sons, who had no apparent call to religious life, but could benefit the family by placement as a bishop or cardinal. One of the most colorful of these was Pope John XII who was elected in 964. He was the third pope in history to change his name, born as Octavianus to his parents Alberic II of Spoleto and his wife Alda. Alberic, a er having overthrown his step-father Hugh, King of Italy, named himself Prince of Rome, and required a solemn oath from the Roman nobles that when the papal seat was next vacant, his son Octavianus would be elected as pope. Alberic died in 954, and Octavianus succeeded him unopposed as the Price of Rome. The reigning pope, Agapetus, died in November 955, and on December 16, Octavianus was declared pope. He saw no problem with being both a prince and a pope. He was eighteen years old.

And, so, the history of the Church con nues.

¿Cómo tú te imaginas a Dios?
