Mass Intentions—Intenciones de las Misas

Did you Know? ~ ¿Sabía Usted? It is important to help children understand the difference between telling on others and sharing information that could help keep themselves or someone else safe. Teach children about secrets that are okay (a surprise birthday party), and secrets that are never okay (don’t tell mom or dad that...), and, perhaps most importantly, what to do if someone asks them to keep a bad secret. Speaking up can save a kid from harm or abuse. To request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “To Tattle or Protect” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

From the desk of Padre José

This week on Tuesday, we celebrated Mother Teresa. Probably most of remember this petite nun who dressed simple and took care of the poor all over the world. The news could not keep up with her from taking care of the very poor and and unwanted to sitting with Princess Diana. I really admired her and today more than ever, I am asking for her courage to be a guiding light for me as your pastor, priest, brother, neighbor and simply someone wanting to make a difference in the small things that I am responsible for.

Our second reading from St. Paul to the Romans speaks of: "'You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not covet,' and whatever other commandment there may be, a summed up in this saying, namely 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law." I simply have to sit and ask the Lord to continue guiding us in our Church here as we continue welcoming ALL. We have a particular blessing of being in a downtown area where all our neighbors come from somewhere else. What a blessing that we can share and be brothers and sisters to them just as they are to us, and as they may have also welcomed our parents and loved ones even before we were here. On the same token, this past Tuesday we heard from White House officials that not everyone is welcome, not everyone can call this our home, and that for sure even children are less than others due to no fault of their own. This is in no way associated with the Gospel of Jesus Christ who welcomed all and defended the most vulnerable. I pray we may not continue to repeat the errors of history by simply being silent and not speaking up for those who are vulnerable. We have a higher calling to do God's Will. Let us act accordingly and speak accordingly to this Call and not just the Political correctness that may not want to offend someone because of their racism, xenophobia, and fear of the stranger who IS INDEED our NEIGHBOR.

May Mother Teresa who was not afraid of speaking up and being a voice for the voiceless and unwanted pray and intercede for us.

Fraternally, Father José.

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 10, 2017 VIGESIMO TERCER DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO

St. Anthony Elementary School, mindful of its mission to be a witness to the love of Christ for all, admits students regardless of race, color, or national and/or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.

St. Anthony Elementary School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, disability, medical condition, sex or national and/or ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs, although certain athletic leagues and other programs may limit participation and some archdiocesan schools operate as single sex schools.

While St. Anthony Elementary School does not discriminate against students with special needs, a full range of services may not always be available to them. Decisions concerning the admission and continued enrollment of a student in the school are based upon the student’s emotional, academic and physical abilities and the resources available to the school in meeting the student’s needs.
