Vancouver Canucks WelcomeYoung Stars 2014

On behalf of the Vancouver Canucks and our NHL counterparts involved in the Young Stars Classic Tournament, we want to extend our appreciation to the fans and city of Penticton for welcoming us to your city for an exciting week of hockey. We have amazing fans in the Okanagan and I look forward to watching up-tempo, skilled and competitive NHL prospect games with you while celebrating the rich hockey history of Penticton. The Young Stars Classic acts as a great opportunity to showcase the game’s top up-and-coming prospects and also display the fi rst-class hockey facilities and beauty of Penticton. This is an excellent tournament to develop and assess our prospects in competitive game situations. Over the past three Young Star Classics, over 65 players have gone on to play NHL games. We would also like to extend our thanks to everyone involved that have helped make this a memorable event for our fans, players and staff. We hope you enjoy the tournament and look forward to seeing you again.

Organizing Committee ChairAndrew Jakubeit

Thanks for attending the Vancouver Canucks Young Stars classic and welcome to Penticton. We are thrilled to once again partner with four NHL teams to provide facilities, community support and a real game atmosphere for their prospects to be evaluated and demonstrate their talents. It has been amazing to watch top draft picks come to this event, this year 12 fi rst round draft picks are scheduled to

appear. They dazzle us with their speed, skill, energy and talent. With over 35 players that have played in the previous Young Stars now actively playing in the NHL… it showcases the amount of skill and determination the players bring to the ice in hopes of cracking the NHL.Penticton has a great hockey history and passion. It is exciting to see hockey heroes of the past; now part of team management, coaching, or scouting, also in our community. This classic wouldn’t happen without the community support, volunteers and the work of our committee (including Global Spectrum management and the Vancouver Canucks)… so thank you.I hope you enjoy your time in Penticton.

Bo HorvatNinth Overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft

Jared McCann24th Overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft

Vancouver Canucks ProspectsYoung Stars 2014

A two-way forward with a constant nose for the net, Jared McCann has one of the quickest releases of all skaters at the 2014 Young Stars Classic. The sharpshooting 18-year-old fi nished second on Sault Ste. Marie in goals (27) and points (62) in 64 games played during the 2013/14 season. He also fi nished second in the team in playoff scoring registering seven points (2-5-7) in nine games. McCann received Ontario Hockey League All-Rookie Second Team honours in his fi rst season with Sault Ste. Marie in 2012/13 after recording 44 points (21-23-44) in 64 games. Internationally, the London, Ontario native won gold with Canada at the 2013 Under-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and bronze at the 2014 Under-18 World Championship. McCann also served as a member of Team Ontario at the 2013 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, registering three points (1-2-3) in fi ve games.

With the size and strength to matchup against opposing teams’ top players, Bo Horvat looks to be an imposing force at the 2014 Young Stars Classic. A playmaker on both ends of the ice, the 19-year-old appeared in 54 games in his third season with the London Knights, collecting a career-high 74 points (30-44-74) which ranked third most on the team. He also tallied 11 points (5-6-11) in nine playoff games continuing his success in post-season play. In six pre-season games with

the Vancouver Canucks last season, Horvat tallied two assists.

Horvat was an integral part of two back-to-back Memo-rial Cup clinching teams with London. During the 2013

OHL Playoffs, he scored a league-leading 16 goals (16-7-23) through 21 games earing Most Valuable Player honours.

On the international stage, the Rodney, Ontario native has represented Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championships and at the 2012 Un-der-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, where he helped Canada win the gold. He also captained the bronze-medal winning Team Ontario at the 2012 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge, where he posted seven points (4-3-7) in six games.

Dane Fox Signed as a free agent, December 28, 2013

A pure goal scorer that can play in all situations, Dane Fox looks to fi ll the net at the 2014 Young Stars Classic. The 20-year-old fi nished fi rst in the OHL in goals (64) and sec-ond in points (107) behind Erie Otters teammate Connor Brown in the 2013/14 season. He was awarded OHL Overage Player of the Year and OHL First All-Star Team honours for his remark-able season in which he scored more goals than any other player in the OHL since the 2006/07 season, getting his 50th goal in his 43rd game to became the fastest player to reach the 50-goal mark in the OHL in over 20 years. The Thamesville, Ontario native also fi nished tied for ninth in OHL playoff scoring registering 19 points (8-11-19) in 14 games. Despite missing the fi rst half of the 2012/13 season due to a foot injury, Fox recorded 36 points (19-17-36) in just 37 games, further highlighting his tendency for lighting the lamp across the OHL. Fox was acquired from the London Knights during the 2011/12 season and was named to the CHL Top Prospects Game.

Johnny Gaudreau

Sam Bennett

Calgary Flames ProspectsYoung Stars 2014

Mason McDonald

Having just turned 18 years old in June and looking every bit that age off the ice, standing six feet tall and only tipping the scale at 178 pounds, some might think that Sam Bennett will want to avoid the tough areas when he straps on the skates. What a surprise it is when he competes with much bigger opponents all over the ice, constantly badgering them night in and night out and showing nastiness that led to 118 penalty minutes for Kingston in 2013-14.But when Bennett was drafted fourth overall, it wasn’t just to be a pest. He has setup skills that had him at almost an assist per game clip for the Frontenacs and he also potted 36 goals to help his team to a second place fi nish in the East Division. While Bennett may look like the complete package, his parents, who he credits as his biggest infl uencers, have helped ensure that he keeps a level head. The Ontario native attended the World Junior camp this summer in Calgary. Bennett already won

gold for his country at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament and the 2013 Under-18 World Championships, so hockey fans across the country should hope that he once again dons

the red maple leaf when the tournament starts this December.Calgary signed the centre to a three-year entry level contract on July 25, 2014.

While small in stature, the accolades earned by Johnny Gaudreau as a Boston College Eagle are massive. The most impressive that he took home individually was the Hobey

Baker Award, which he won as the top college player in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 2014. Gaudreau was the fourth Flames player to win the

Hobey Baker (Brendan Morrison ’97, Chris Drury ’98, Jordan Leopold ’02).The left winger from Carneys Point, New Jersey enjoyed team success in his

college career as well. As a freshman he helped the Eagles take home the NCAA Championship in 2012, potting a highlight reel goal in the 4-1 victory over Ferris State in

the fi nals. Gaudreau followed the NCAA title up with a gold medal for USA in the 2013 World Juniors, earning All-Star honours after recording seven goals and two assists

in the Americans’ seven game run.“Johnny Hockey” made his NHL debut this season, scoring on his fi rst

NHL shot. The Flames penned the 2011 fourth round pick to a three-year entry level contract on April 11, 2014.

A quick and athletic style helps explain how Mason McDonald earned a reputation as a goalie with excellent recovery ability. The Halifax, Nova Scotia native was the fi rst goalie taken in June’s NHL draft when the Flames selected him 34th overall. McDonald, who plays his junior hockey in the QMJHL, was traded from Acadie-Bathurst to Charlottetown this past season before helping Canada to a bronze medal at the Un-der-18 World Championship. He made 38 saves in the third place match against Sweden and also led the tournament with a .930 save percentage.

Nikolaj Ehlers

Few players on the planet played more hockey than Josh Morrissey in 2013-14. The fl eet-footed defenceman suited up in 112 games between Prince Albert of the WHL, the Jets’ AHL affi liate in St. John’s, and representing Canada at the World Junior Championships. Morrissey’s toughest test of the season came toward the end of his unending year when he was thrust into regular action for the Calder Cup, contending St. John’s IceCaps. He more than met the challenge during his fi rst taste of pro hockey, earning nine points (2G, 7A) in 20 AHL playoff games while playing signifi cant minutes for the IceCaps.

The Jets took a chance on a lanky netminder playing in Odessa, Texas during the fi fth round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and the reward has been obvious. Just two seasons later, Connor Hellebuyck is the reigning winner of the Mike Richter Award as college hockey’s top goaltender after an outstanding campaign for the UMass-Lowell River Hawks. Over two years at U Mass-Lowell, Hellebuyck compiled a gaudy 38-12-2 record with just as many shutouts as losses. He also backstopped the River Hawks to consecutive Hockey East titles earning tournament MVP honours in 2013 and 2014.

Winnipeg made Nikolaj Ehlers the second-highest drafted Danish player in NHL history at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft when they selected the native of Aalborg, Denmark in the fi rst round, ninth overall. The Dashing Dane, as he’s been referred to before, compiled more goals than any draft-eligible player last season, amassing 49 tallies in 63 games for the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL. For his impressive fi rst season in Halifax, he was recognized with the BMO Award as the top rookie in the Canadian Hockey League.
