Keoni had a great job and had been with the same company for over 20 years. One
day he got really sick and was hospitalized. His diagnosis took months and included
three surgeries. He was out of work for over a year, and during that time, his company
downsized and closed his office. He had a wife and two young children to care for.
Eventually they weren’t able to meet their obligations and found themselves living
in their car on the streets...

With more than half of us needing blood during our lives, maintaining a safe and adequate community blood supply is important to everyone. By donating blood, you’ll help ensure that it is available for all who need it, and you’ll help save up to three lives.
Everyday in Hawaii, hundreds of patients count on volunteer blood donors for their very survival. The donation process is safe and usually takes about an hour. There is some paperwork, a
confidential interview, and a mini physical, but the actual collection of blood takes only five to eight minutes.
Your help is needed now! Two hundred pints of blood are needed every day to help maintain safe blood levels. That’s 58,000-60,000 pints a year.

This is the fourteenth of the series of articles focusing on the 21 Asia-Pacific economies that will be represented at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Honolulu during November 2011.
BackgroundPapua New Guinea is a country in Oceania, occupying the eastern half of the island
of New Guinea and numerous offshore islands. It is located in the southwestern
Pacific Ocean, in a region defined since the early 19th century as Melanesia. Papua
New Guinea is one of the most culturally diverse countries on Earth, with over 850
indigenous languages and at least as many traditional societies, out of a population
of just under seven million. It is also one of the most rural, as only 18% of its people
live in urban centres. The country is one of the world’s least explored, culturally and
geographically, and many undiscovered species of plants and animals are thought
to exist in the interior of Papua New Guinea,
Customs, Culture & Etiquette• Kai bars (fast-food stands) are popular
• Food taboos vary and are often temporary, as with restrictions on pregnant
women and initiates. Others are totemic, involving plants or animals that are
symbolic of kin groups. Still others are relational; for example, a son-in-law may
not consume food in the presence of his mother-in-law
• Papua New Guinea is renowned for ceremonial occasions at which hundreds of
pigs or other valuables are distributed to guests
• Competitive feasting (“fighting with food”) between big men and chiefs features
oratory, dancing, singing, drumming, and feasting that go on for days, along with
the payment of bride-prices and other exchanges
• There is no legal drinking age
• Villagers produce most of their own food, and many townspeople plant gardens
and rely on open-air markets for fruits and vegetables sold by village women
• Most land is vested in kin groups and allocated according to need
• Individual land ownership is not common
• While land normally passes from father or mother’s brother to children or nieces
and nephews, the intended recipients provide much assistance and gifts to the
“owners” before the land passes to their care
• There are both village and national court systems. Village courts use custom
rather than English law, a situation that sometimes results in injustice from the
point of view of the larger society
• Sometimes people will greet you, take your hand in a hand shake and hold it
against their chest. This is a sign of friendship and respect
• Most people do not keep time and work according to the sun. They get up in the
morning when it starts to get light, lunch at noon, visit when it’s dark and sleep at
about 8PM.
• Usually nothing happens on time due to the fact that most people do not keep
time. In general people are not offended if you are late, and you will need to be
aware of the fact that people will come late or arrive early for appointments
• Services like buses do not run on time, there is no time schedule. In general planes
arrive on time but often they are late as well and sometimes will not arrive
• People will usually offer their time freely; they love to serve and help and do not
covet their time. This is a major sign of friendship and coveting your time will be a
sure sign that you are not a friend
Papua New Guinea Facts & Fun
• Officially the Independent State of Papua New Guinea
• Capital: Port Moresby• Queen: Elizabeth II• Population: 6,732,000 (2009 est)• Language: Melanesian Pidgin serves as
the lingua franca, English spoken by 1%-2%, Motu spoken in Papua region, plus 820 indigenous languages spoken
• Currency: Papua New Guinean kina (PGK) • Languages: English, Tok Pisin, Hiri Motu• Many live in extreme poverty, with about
one third of the population living on less than US$1.25 per day
• There are hundreds of ethnic groups indigenous to Papua New Guinea, the majority being from the group known as Papuans, whose ancestors arrived in the New Guinea region tens of thousands of years ago. Many remote Papuan tribes still have only marginal contact with the outside world
• Rugby league is by far the most popular sport and has been described as a replacement for tribal warfare as a way of explaining the local enthusiasm for the game (a matter of life and death)
• A large proportion of the population is illiterate. Particularly women are affected. Much of the education in the country is provided by church institutions

Create A Remarkable Experience
and make someone’s day special
I welcome my day with enthusiasm and passion
knowing that I have been blessed with another
opportunity to touch someone’s life in a very special
and unique way
I can bring warmth and joy to someone’s day with
a gracious welcome and greeting, a sparkle in my
voice and a smile in my eyes
I can transform that gracious welcome and greeting
into an extraordinary experience simply by
addressing that special someone by their name
I can let someone know that I truly care about them
by “being in the moment” and making them feel like
they are the most important thing to me
I can express my thanks with sincere words of
appreciation and reveal an even deeper sense
of gratitude through my caring and thoughtful
actions
I can truly honor someone and make them feel like
part of the family by extending them a warm and
personal invitation to return
