Chairman’s Chat The bank holiday weekend was the motor club’s autocross event.  This was rounds 5 and 6 of 6 of the British championship, and we saw the new British Champion Ross Westgarth win, Ross is still a Junior running in the Junior class.

Several Witney members took part: • Mark Bradley getting second in class just 4 seconds behind the new British

champion, whom he beat by 2 seconds on Sunday. • Russell Milligan took a 2 nd  in class on Saturday with 1.6 seconds covering the top 4

in class A2. • Daniel Adderley got second in class both days and was fastest Witney member in

his Escort • John Murphy and Jamie Davidson both in Subaru Impreza’s got second in class E

on Saturday and Sunday respectively. • And Jimmy Milligan hustled his 206 rally car around in the rally car class chasing a

2.7l mr2 all weekend.

I would just like to say well done to you all, you did WMC proud.

I would also like to thank all the helpers and if I forget anyone I am sorry.

weekend. ü Mike for getting the Permit ü Eddie, Herbie, Charlie, Ben, Dave, Craig, Will, Sam, Laura, Steve, Steve’s two

friends, Peter, Albert, David (and his girlfriend), Nobby and the other Marshals – a big thank you to you all (sorry if I have missed anyone out).

ü Also thanks to Daniel, Mark, Jody and her friends for helping put it all away

The club got lots of good comments for our event but we are not sure if we will put it on again next year as there is obviously not enough interest from our 50 odd members in running the event as half the above helpers are not even club members, without their help the event would not have run.

Check out the autocross website for Photo’s.

Social Report The Micolew Walkabout went well, thanks to Mike and Ellie.  There were four entries and after feeding the ducks at the start it was a pleasant walk in Burford without all those tourists, before the obligatory pub.  They seem to be everywhere!

With three all finishing with the same points it was down to furthest, cleanest.  Well done Helen and Steve.

The Season So Far With the autocross bearing down on us somewhat akin to a steam roller, I thought I‛d better catch up on recent events from the Treasurer‛s point of view, ie Secretary of the Meeting, Timekeeper, Results Secretary – you‛ve guessed it, just about everything, except money!

We were invited to put on a “demonstration” autotest at Ducklington Vintage and Steam Rally on 19 th July. From our point of view, it was free publicity and a nice, big, grass venue that we didn‛t need to grovel to use! I couldn‛t get there until about 12.45pm, so was vaguely surprised to hear nothing as I went through the entrance. Problem solved, lot of blokes looking under the bonnet / dash of Russell‛s Peugeot, and a sound of hammering! Despite being OK the day before, the key wouldn‛t go into the ignition. More hammering, swapping around to try different techniques, lots of advice and, eventually, the steering lock was removed!

Steve had planned just four tests, to allow for explanations etc to any interested parties. We did have a few spectators, but, as we were out on a limb, and no-one knew we were there, they were few and far between. Mike gave Russell a run for his money initially, but Russell‛s superior car and experience told in the end. However, all three, plus Brian (timekeeper), Ellie & Alex (Mike‛s fan club!) and I (results) had a good afternoon. We‛d almost finished packing away, when Witney TV rolled up to do a feature. Steve and Russell quickly put up a few cones and put on a show for the cameras. At one point, there was a camera on Russell‛s car, but I didn‛t see the resultant footage. Mike was walking round the show and missed this bit – “I‛ve got a better face for radio” – his words, not mine, when informed he‛d missed the camera.

On 15 August, Steve & I want over to Jimmy‛s farm with the “yellow peril” on the trailer – said car being a Peugeot Steve picked up for a song to use as a club car for autotests, allowing us to offer prospective autotesters a taster. We arrived to find 3 – yes 3 – new autotesters waiting for us in

Page 8: Septem ber 2010witneymotorclub.co.uk/documents/201009_Magazine_Sep_2010.pdf · on again next year as there is obviously not enough interest from our 50 odd members in running the

the field, and were soon joined by Russell with his car – now boasting a new ignition / steering lock!

Steve soon set out some cones and began instructing our “babies” in the art of autotesting. Jimmy arrived and, whilst he and Russell set about getting both of Jimmy‛s cars to the field, the others went to Burger King to get Sunday lunch.

We finally started the event at 2.30pm and ran 6 tests. The “Yellow Peril” broke an engine mount after 5 tests, so the three using that were classified after 5 tests as novices, whilst the 3 experienced autotesters fought out the final test. The final result was another victory for Russell, from Steve & Jimmy (twice). The novice class, renamed the “Baby Class” since they were all “newborns” to the art of autotesting, was a hard fought battle, won by Will Trinder. They finished with less than 7 seconds between the 3 of them after 5 tests, each of them clocking a fastest time to keep their own personal battle going right until the car called it quits.

Despite being tempted the day before to take wellies, it turned out to be a scorching hot day and I actually got a suntan!

Thanks to Jimmy for the use of the field, Steve for organising and to the guys who turned up – you were great, please come again!

There were also three total novices, who shared the club car, provided by Steve and which broke after 5 tests, so they were classed separately as follows:

1 st Will Trinder 2 nd Mike Bishop 3 rd Craig Abbott

They deemed “novice” was too grand a title, so entered as “Babies” – we suggest a baby’s rattle as trophy for class award at Awards Dinner – won’t cost as much as a trophy and it would be far more fun! They were really keen and we want to encourage them to come again.

Magazine Editor‛s ‘Bit‛ Wow, what an exciting time! I think a huge “thank you” is deserved by your committee, particularly to Steve, for putting on such a wonderful event as the Autocross. I gather it was very lively (with quite a few rolling) and very well organised. I know it took lots of organising but ran very well on the day. And, unlike the music festival at Reading, you didn‛t have the mud to contend with. Many thanks to Sam Gratrix for allowing us to use his pictures.

There‛s not a lot I can say after that, except to say that we look forward to seeing you all at Motor Club events.
