Experience Connecting Knowing Loving Growing WHAT CLASS SHOULD I TAKE? Aldersgate does offer a lot of classes, studies, and small groups. Many of them are starting anew in September. Trying to decide what to take usually comes down to three things: What is it? When is it? How long will it last? Occasionally, people decide on other factors, of course; but I want to help you find the right class this fall to help you grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Alpha is a great place to start. If you haven’t been in a class for a while, this might be the one for you. It takes a look at the big questions, like “Why did Jesus have to die for my sins?” and “What exactly is the Holy Spirit?” People who are new to church and people who have been in church all their lives are finding Alpha to be transforma- tional. Alpha runs for 11 weeks this fall on Wednesdays. Disciple Bible Study is for people who really want to study the grand themes of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. If you’ve ever thought, “I wish I knew more about the Bible;” well then, I would suggest Disciple Bible Study. It runs for 34 weeks on Tuesday nights. There is home- work. We will read about 70% of the Bible. Disciple 1 is for people who have never taken a Disciple class. Disciple 2 is being held for those who have completed 1. And there’s also going to be a short-term Disciple class called “Invitation to the Psalms” held on Wednesday nights. Companions in Christ is a small group experience in spir- itual formation. This group will meet to look at spiritual practices and to grow in faith and trust of God with the help of Christian brothers and sisters. If you’ve ever thought, “I sure would like to have a safe place to learn how to live out the faith” then this could be the place for you. It will meet on Tuesdays at 6:30 pm. Financial Peace University is for people who would like to spend some time trying to reduce debt, give more, save more, and spend less. It will be held on Wednesday nights. Wednesday Night Live Classes are short-term studies. They generally last anywhere 4 to 10 weeks. These classes are good for folks who need flexibility. There’s usually not any homework, it isn’t a year-round commitment, and there are children’s activities happening at the same time as these adult classes. The classes being led at this time are Alpha, Financial Peace University, Invitation to Psalms, and Caring for Caregivers. Daytime Classes are for people who would prefer to meet during the day instead of the evening. While the subject matter changes every few months, the people in the class often continue from month to month and develop strong relationships. Namesake: When God Rewrites Your Story will be held on Tuesdays at 10:30. Daniel, Faith Under Pressure will be held on Thursdays at 1:30. Rewired is a class designed just for men. It meets on Tuesdays at 6:30 am. It looks at current events through a Biblical lens. But instead of just listening or studying in order to gain knowledge, people in this class are challenged to live out their faith as Christ did. WHAT CLASS SHOULD I TAKE?

Aldersgate does offer a lot of classes, studies, and small groups. Many of them are starting anew in September. Trying to decide what to take usually comes down to three things: What is it? When is it? How long will it last? Occasionally, people decide on other factors, of course; but I want to help you find the right class this fall to help you grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Alpha is a great place to start. If you haven’t been in a class for a while, this might be the one for you. It takes a look at the big questions, like “Why did Jesus have to die for my sins?” and “What exactly is the Holy Spirit?” People who are new to church and people who have been in church all their lives are finding Alpha to be transforma-tional. CHILDREN IN WORSHIP

At Aldersgate, we welcome everyone into the worship services. For our young

worshipers, we realize that an hour is a long time, yet we want them to experience

worshipping with their parents and other church family. We have designed the

children’s church during the 11:00 service to allow them to participate and then

have time to engage in activities and worship they are specially designed for

them. The children leave the service with their leaders following the offertory

prayer in the service.

This fall, we have two different age groups:

2-4 year olds will have their own session each week. From September-December,

they will hear a story each week focused on sharing God’s love. They will have a

simple activity, song and prayer to accompany the story.

Kindergarten-third graders will begin this fall learning about worship. They will

examine a Bible verse, discover what it means to worship in different ways and

engage in their own brief worship time. They will have take-home ideas for wor-

ship in their family as well.

Fourth and fifth graders are old enough to participate fully in the worship service

in the Sanctuary. Beginning in September, they may take an activity book just for

their age group. Each booklet is designed around a worship theme – the Apostles’

Creed, Holy Communion, etc. These are available at the Welcome Center.

Activity bags are for children preschool through fifth grade for all three services.

There are games for different ages in each bag. We just ask that families return the

bags to the baskets after worship is over.

ARTS IN THE AFTERNOON

Sundays, beginning Sept. 15th, come join in part or all of our Arts

offerings for Kids!

MUSICAL (performance date: Dec. 8, 6:30)

led by Anna Van Deventer

4:45 – 5:30pm Children’s Choirs. Two choirs: M &M’s (Music and

More!), 4-6 –year-olds, Family Life Center - Room 110 / 2nd-5th

graders, led by Heidi Miller; Choir room)

Aldersgate Experience 7

This fall, let Psalm 100 come to life for you! AUMC invites every age and ability to

make a joyful noise unto the Lord! All are invited and welcome to join in our music

ministry!

CHANCEL CHOIR: Do you love to sing and worship? Get your happy on every Wednesday! We rehearse from 7:30- 9:00pm, and then multiply the blessing by choosing whether to serve the 8:15 or 11:00 service. Also, we’ll be starting Christmas music in a few weeks! Our choir is big enough that you don’t have to make a 52-week commitment, we understand that everyone is out some of the time. Just come when you can! Truly, “No experience is necessary” – we make a sweet, sweet sound in God’s ear by doing our best, and letting the Holy Spirit do the rest! Adults and Youth are encouraged to join in! So, come on! PRAISE TEAM: Rehearses on Tuesdays, 6:15-7:30pm. If you enjoy Contemporary Christian music, and love to sing or play guitar, drum, bass, flute, accordion, keyboard, trumpet…. consider whether you might add to our team! Youth and Adult singers and instrumentalists are all very welcome! P.S. If you have a song request, please let Nan know – she loves to know your favorites.. CHILDREN’S CHOIR: Children’s choir is shape-shifting this fall to better serve our church and our children! Sunday Arts Afternoons offer opportunity for children to dance (4:00-4:45pm), sing (4:45 – 5:30pm) and ring (5:30-6:00pm)! Young Dancers are led by Anna Van Deventer. They begin practices on Sept. 8th at 4:00pm. 2nd -5th graders are welcome. A parent is asked to attend the first, organizational meeting. Young Singers are in two groups: (one for 4-yr. through 6-year-olds, and one for 2nd-through 5th graders). They sing for worship about once a month and will also be presenting a Christmas Musical this year!! Young Ringers , will meet right after children’s choir, is our intermediate children’s bell choir, for children who have rung before, or have music reading skills. (If there are new ringers interested, please let Nan know, so she can contact you about starting a group for them asap.) Singers and Ringers will both begin their rehearsals on Sept. 15th. HANDBELLS: Two adult/youth bell choirs and two children’s bell choirs are forming this fall (beginning the week of Sept. 9th). For adults and youth: JOYFUL NOISE RINGERS, our advanced choir, will meet on Tuesdays at 7:30pm; and PRAISE RINGERS, a beginner-level choir forming now, will meet on Monday evenings at 7:00pm. Please note that youth are encouraged to join with adults, for handbells and choir as well! SWEET SOUNDS (HAMMERED DULCIMER GROUP) If you’ve always loved hammered dulcimer, why not try learning to play? We have a small group learning together on every-other Wednesday at 11:00am. We may even have a dulcimer you can borrow! Call Nan and find out more about us! SPOTIFY YOUR PRAISE Spotify is a free application for computers or smart phones/pads/pods that plays music from playlists built by members. It has provided us a great way to surf the learning curve in new worship music! Our church has a premium membership subscription, which allows us to build playlists and share them with others. You can listen in with us by creating your own (basic, free) account. Each month, Nan creates a playlist of the music which will be sung that month at our 9:30am Contemporary worship service. If you search for Nan de Andrade and then choose the month’s playlist (for example, AUG AUMC 2013), you can “tune your heart” all week, and be even more ready to praise God on Sunday mornings! Another cool feature is that you can select “Radio” from this playlist and it will shuffle in a variety of Contemporary Christian music from the same artists and play all day long! Hope you’ll give it a try – Please contact Nan de Andrade, Music Minister, to learn more. ([email protected])

A MOMENT OF GRATITUDE BY

GREG FISHER

I am grateful to Aldersgate because it is a family of the faithful. It is a family

that has supported me and my family with prayers during difficult times; it is a

family that promises to help raise our collective children in the faith by providing

examples of Christian life; and, it is a family of individuals who provide a strong

witness to me through their lives that are plainly lived in that faith.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY - FALL KICK-OFF

Aldersgate United Methodist Church

The Prayer Shawl Ministry will hold a fall kick off meet-

ing on Sunday, September 8th, 4:30 – 6:00pm. in Room 201

September meetings for both daytime and evening groups

and provide an opportunity for combined fellowship and

discussion about our projects. This is an important meeting

for all members, so please plan on being there and invite a

guest to be part of this caring ministry.

DRIVE-THRU PRAYER is the 1st Tuesday of each month from 4:00-

6:00 pm. It’s simple, you’ll feel great afterwards, AND it’s the ONLY

ONE IN DURHAM ! Just drive “thru". Someone will meet you at your

car and pray with you. OR

If you are interested in helping (but not necessarily praying) you can help

set up signs, take down the tent , or hand out water. Feel like you want

to check out the prayer part? You can start by observing with a partner.

We have heard from many in the community what a blessing this is to

them and you could be part of it! If you have any questions, contact Carol

SEPTEMBER 3RD 4:00 - 6:00 PM

Our year is off to a great start! Afterschool has been back for one month! We have

120 children grades Kindergarten thru middle school enrolled in the afterschool pro-

gram. They are a great group of kids. I hope you were able to read some of their All

About Me sheets they worked on and hung along the hallways. There were terrific !

Preschool will be starting back the Tuesday following Labor Day. We have 152 children enrolled in our

preschool program ages 1-4 years old. We have just completed 3 weeks of preschool summer camp and the

kids loved learning about dinosaurs, pirates and princesses and camping. The s’mores were the best!

This year we will have 28 preschool teachers and 16 afterschool teachers working with our children. I ask

you to pray for the families that attend our school – for some this is the only place they hear about Jesus and

see his love lived out. I ask you to pray for the teachers who are in contact with the children each day and

for their own personal families.

We invite you attend our Christmas programs – they are adorable, or come to Chapel held on Wednesday’s

at 10:30am.

A Day of Service to Veterans FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 8:30AM -2:00PM

DURHAM COUNTY MEMORIAL STADIUM & THE NATIONAL GUARD ARMORY

750 STADIUM DR. DURHAM, NC

“Stand Down” is United States military terminology which means to formally deactivate or

decommission a unit, formation or command structure.

Bull City Stand Down seeks to serve Veterans who first stood up for our country with their service and

sacrifice. Sadly, too many of our Vets are unemployed or underemployed and are rejoining an economy fresh

from recession. Their needs are often considered “non-service related”, in other words not covered by the

usual channels of Veterans Services. The “Stand Down” seeks to bring a myriad of resources together in one

place to help Durham Vets meet the demands of returning to civilian society . In addition there is always a

moving opening ceremony in the Stadium to honor our Veterans for their service to our country.

Something you’ll not soon forget.

YOU CAN HELP BY: Bring “in- kind” donations which can be placed in the “Stand Down” bin

along the Wesley Room Hall. Or by calling Jane Bahor 919-6986634 or Curtis Gay - 919 471-2352 for pickup.

(see list below)

Toiletries * Facial Soap * Hand Soap * Body Soap * Hand Sanitizer * Shampoo * Ponchos * Toothpaste *

Underwear (male & female) all sizes * Toothbrush * Socks (M&F) * Feminine Hygiene products * Towels *

Mesh Clothes * Disposable razors * Gift Cards * Dental Floss * Toilet paper * Lotion * Bottled Water *

Shaving Cream * Can Sodas * Gallon Storage Bags * Reading glasses (all powers).

We also need volunteers to help outside the county stadium at the Aldersgate UMC “Prayer Table” Please

SEPTEMBER QUIET DAYS .

Quiet Days will be held on the following Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. until noon in the

Wesley Room

SEPTEMBER 21ST - ENCOUNTERING CHRIST: “WHO DO YOU SAY I AM?”

As our fall classes and activities start up again it is even more important for us to take

time to spend in the presence of the Lord. It is here that we can find refreshment for our

spirit and take time to listen to the still small voice that God uses to call us. But how do

we do that amid the flurry of activities? We can do that by taking advantage of Quiet

Days! What are Quiet Days? They are times set aside to be quiet before God and a time

to catch our breath from the busyness of life.

But doing that is not always easy. Our days are often over scheduled with many things

pulling at our hearts. Jesus knew this. That is why he often went off by himself to a qui-

et place apart, to be able to fully engage with others in his life and ministry. We are en-

couraged to do the same – “Come away. . . and rest awhile.” (Mark 6:31).

Don’t let the demands of the world come between you and the One who made you. Our

God-given gifts and call are unique to each of us – but for all of us, it takes time in si-

lence, solitude, and prayerful reflection for those to be nurtured.

Our September Quiet Day will be held on Saturday the 21st from 8:30 a.m. until noon in

the Wesley room. Bring your Bible and a journal. Lunch will be provided. Our focus

for this Quiet Day will be "Encountering Christ: Who Do You Say I Am?"

Rest in the Lord - You'll be glad you did!

Jesus says, “This is my commandment that you love

one another as I have loved you.” Loving and caring

for one another is not just the pastor’s job – it’s some-

thing Jesus calls us all to do! Stephen Ministry is a

ministry in which people with special gifts for caring

ministry can put those gifts to use in an organized

way, bringing Jesus’ love and care to those who most

need it.

Our Stephen Ministers are trained and available to meet with you to provide one-to-one care, prayer and sup-

port to those going through a difficult time. If you or someone you love would like to talk to someone about

connecting with a Stephen Minister, please contact Pastor Tara Lain at 919.477.0509, x.102 or

[email protected].

TIME AND TALENT SURVEY

The Time and Talent survey is your opportunity to

volunteer for one of the many ministries here at

Aldersgate. Each year we can grow in Christ as we

serve those we love in our church, community, and

world. By simply completing the survey, the Lay

Leadership committee is able to place you in one

of the many areas that need your help: Greeters, Ushers,

New Baby Ministry, Missions, small group activities -

the list goes on and on. We hope you will prayerfully

consider the areas you would like to help.

To complete the survey, go to www.aldersgate.org and click on the Time and Talent survey or click HERE .

Paper copies are at the Welcome Center located outside the Sanctuary. If you have any questions, please

contact Paula Veasey: [email protected] or Stacey McCorison: [email protected] .
