“Fish on! Marketing” What is it?!? What is “Fish on! Marketing?” It is a term from the sport of fishing that 99% of the population knows but many have forgotten. The term “Fish on!” is what a fisherman yells when a fish bites on the worm or other bait. The fish tugs on the line for more of the bait and it’s up to the fisherman to catch that fish. Isn’t the same true in marketing our business? We can’t catch a fish unless they take the bait and we can’t catch a customer unless they show interest in us and actually give us permission to sell our products and services. Yes, the goal of all marketing should be to gain permission to sell! When our marketing can actually gain the interest of our audience to consider our business, it has done its job for our sales representatives.
“Fish on! Marketing” can be implemented in a variety of ways; from the way we network one on one, to the way we make the audi-ence interested in our radio, TV and newspaper advertising. In addition, what we do with Social Media to gain interest in us is a great use for “Fish on! Marketing.” Audience members attending the upcoming “Fish on! Marketing” seminar will learn if they are a “D” or an “R” when it comes to the politics of marketing. They will learn how to get readers to actually read their material and they will learn how to do it with half or less of the time and money now being spent. They will learn how great marketers get most of the attention over
other advertisers and they will learn how to get potential customers to respond and ask for more!
Patrick H. McGaughey, CPF is an international business speaker whose credentials were built with over 30 years in broadcasting and business association management. He is recognized as one of the Top-5 Enter-Trainers in North America for his ability to help audiences laugh a little and learn a lot! However, the only credentials that matter are those he earns in each session, so every seminar he offers is guaranteed to be well received by a super majority of the audience or there is no charge! Call the Chamber of Commerce for registration details today.

Chamber Board Director Nominations The Spearfish Area Chamber of Commerce announces that nominations for three Board of Directors’ positions are currently being sought for the 2014-2016 term.
The Spearfish Area Chamber of Commerce is a democratic association of business and professional people. Final authority rests with the membership in accordance with proce-dures outlined in the organization’s bylaws. For practical operations, the membership elects a Board of Directors to handle the legislative functions of the organization and to serve in a policy-making capacity. Executive responsibility rests with the staff, but the Board of Direc-tors helps outline the policies under which the staff operates.
In accordance with Chamber Bylaws — Article 3, Section 2, Elections*: a nominating committee, consist-ing of two current board members and four individuals from the general membership in good standing will be selected to review potential candidates for board positions. The Vice-President of the Board shall also serve as chairperson for the Nominating Committee, with voting privileges only in the event of a tie vote. The Executive Director of the Chamber shall serve as an additional non-voting member of the Nominating Committee. Any member of the Nominating Committee who becomes interested in a Board position while serving on this com-mittee shall withdraw from the committee before seeking nomination. Prior to the third week of September, the Nominating Committee shall establish a list of nominees. Each of the eligible candidates shall then be sent a questionnaire, approved by the Executive Committee, which will indi-cate their willingness to serve as a Director. Said questionnaire will have a return deadline of September 30, 2013. Prior to the October Board meeting, the Nominating Committee shall confirm by personal contact that the three candidates chosen are willing to accept directorship responsibility. The Nominating Committee shall then present to the Executive Committee, a slate of three candidates to replace the Directors whose regular three year terms are expiring. The Executive Committee shall then review the report of the Nominating Committee and notify the member-ship by mail of the names nominated for Directorship and the right of petition as provided for in the bylaws. A list of candidates, so nominated, shall be kept on file in the Chamber of Commerce office for inspection by the members.
*For a complete copy of the bylaws pertaining to the election process of board members, please contact the Chamber office.
The Mission of the Spearfish Area Chamber of Commerce is to serve its members as the leading voice of business by providing advocacy, leadership and resources. Those interested in serving on the Chamber Board, must be members in good standing, with a desire to enhance the business community of Spearfish and its surrounding trade area.

Spearfish Economic Indicators
Ever since the Gold Rush of 1876, Spearfish has held claim to the distinc-
tion of serving as THE regional trade center for the Northern Black Hills. Today,
Spearfish has a Retail Trade Area of more than 54,000 consumers who pur-
chased $486 million in local goods and services in 2012, according to a compre-
hensive study recently completed for the City of Spearfish by The Retail Coach, a
national retail development firm. The Retail Trade Study went on to conclude that
Spearfish has the potential of capturing $191 million in new retail sales which is
currently being spent outside the community.
According to the Retail Gap/Opportunity Analysis, the retail categories in
Spearfish which have the greatest opportunity for growth include:
• Home Improvements
• Groceries
• Home Furnishings
• Home Electronics; and
• Eating Establishments
This is just a sample of the information which is now available to help potential
entrepreneurs and existing merchants identify opportunities to expand current
merchandising opportunities, pursue new retail concept and/or launch new busi-
ness ventures in Spearfish.
In addition to providing data which substantiates growth opportunities in
Spearfish, the study also analyzes the “Psychographic” profile of the retail trade
area. Psychographic profiling allows retailers the ability to understand the predic-

tive buying habits of potential customers based on life-
style characteristics. This information is extremely helpful
when making marketing decisions, offering discounts or
buying inventory.
If you are interested in learning more about the Retail
Trade Study, I would encourage you to visit

access to the market studies which have been completed
on Spearfish.
