Amoris Laetitia is the result of the two

Synods in 2014 and 2015 on the

pastoral challenges of the family.

Pope Francis asked the synod

fathers to speak from the heart and

called for a worldwide consultation

with the faithful. The Pope has not

changed Church teaching but gives a

vision of the family inspired by the

Gospel as well as an encouragement

for those who are not yet there.

The heart of the document is in

chapter 4 where Francis gives his

own meditation on the famous hymn

to love found in 1Corinthians 13.

Those preparing for marriage might

well find this chapter inspiring.

Pope Francis does not give us a new

set of rules but rather asks us to

discern each individual situation.

Discernment is central to Ignatian

spirituality encouraging us to look at

the signs, to listen to what is

happening and to feel for people all

done in the presence of the Lord.

A new set of canonical, universal

laws, cannot substitute ‘responsible

personal and pastoral discernment of

particular cases’.(16) ‘I would make it

clear that not all discussions of

doctrinal, moral or pastoral issues

need to be settled by interventions of

the magisterium.’(17) ‘We have been

called to form consciences, not to

replace them.’(18) Moral

development is a stepbystep

process that may not happen all at

once. So Francis introduces us to the

principle of gradualness in which we

do not merely proclaim eternal truths,

but through which we accompany a

person meeting each where they are

now and encouraging them to take

one small step and then another.

Through conscientious discernment

we can see what God is asking for

now.(23) Gradualness is an attitude

that sees both the shadows and the

lights of morally messy situations.

The Holy Father says: ‘I sincerely

believe that Jesus wants a Church

attentive to the goodness which the

Holy Spirit sows in the midst of

human weakness’.(26) Pope Francis

does not call for a rigid legalism nor a

lax permissiveness but for a

principled sensitivity to the particular.

Finally Pope Francis calls for mercy

which is ‘the willingness to enter into

the chaos of another, to answer them

in their need.’(28) He hopes for a

Church that is ‘a sign of mercy and

closeness wherever family life

remains imperfect or lacks peace and

joy.’(34) Pope Francis does not

change the content of Church

teaching on marriage and family life,

he does not abandon the rules of the

Church, but he asks us to imitate

Jesus Christ in his humility,

gentleness, joy and love. He asks us

to respect, encourage and

accompany one another on our

journey of love.

A DAY OF ANGLICAN/CATHOLIC DIALOGUE in Ladysmith on Wednesday 24th August 2016

The gathering held at Maria Ratschitz

of some of the Social Projects in our

Diocese. The meeting was an

information one to hear from Jenny

Boyce, about “CARITAS KZN”. Jenny

Boyce has the coordinating role of

the seven KZN Dioceses. It was a

good time to meet one another, to

share and encourage the good work,

and come up with practical ideas to

follow through. It is proposed to have

a Workshop on Fundraising, the

writing of and presenting Proposals,

and possibly offer a Workship on

Social Projects for the priests (and

sisters) of the Diocese.

Those represented were:

Maria Ratschitz Duduza Care Centre

and Hospice, and HBC;

Blaauwbosch Rosary Crèche;

Driefontein Cheche; Mhlumayo

Crèche; St. Anthony’s Home;

Amakhazi Old Age Home; uMusa

woMsinga Projects, Pomeroy (Bishop

Graham shared); Mpuluzi Crèches;

MCARE; Yakhumndeni AIDS

Project, and OVC.

If there are PROJECTS that have

somehow been inadvertently missed

(with apology), and did not receive

information and would like to, please

sms or email Fr. Gerald Gostling so

that you may be added to the

Diocesan list, and also your contact

then passed to Zandile and Jenny.

You can then be sent the full notes of

the meeting that took place. Email Fr

Gerald Gostling via the Diocesan

Office: [email protected]

or SMS: 0761223234.

“CARITAS MEETING” August

5th/6th 2016.

Bishop Graham writes in the letter of

invitation to the priests of our

Diocese: “Through the

Anglican/Catholic dialogue, a small

group of Catholic priests (including

myself and Fr. Peter) have been in

contact with the Anglican Bishop,

Nkosinathi Ndwandwe and his team

of priests. Over the last 23 years we

have had two meetings a year and I

am very happy to say, a really joyful

spirit and camaraderie has grown

between us....”The meeting in

Ladysmith was attended by some 30

priests, roughly half and half Catholic

and Anglican. Fr. Nhlanhle Mchunu

presented an excellent paper on

Amoris Laetitia, and the ‘mind of

Pope Francis’. This provocked lively

discussion, followed by another

presentation by an Anglican on

Receptive Ecumenism, based on the

theology of the Catholic Theologian

Paul Murray, of Durham University in

the UK.

The Prayer Line has been operating for nearly six years, and is able to cope with most African Languages. Each week we include the priest to be prayed for on the Diocesan Prayer List.

Jimmy Mutevera is the coordinator, and Fr. Gerald Gostling the Chaplain. Mass is celebrated each week forall requests, and for the Bishop, Priests, Sisters, Brothers, and people of our Dundee Diocese. God bless

By now most people are well aware

that Pax Christi Pastoral Centre is

temporarily closed until its relocation

is completed. What seems to be less

well known is that the Pax Christi

repository is not closed. The

repository, which serves the Diocese,

is now situated very close to the

Chancery. A room, near to the

Chancery, has been made available

at Sts Peter and Paul parish. With

the skills of a parishioner, a

carpenter, the room has been

converted into a beautiful new

repository with shelves to display

books and other stock. Miguel

Nunes, assisted by his family, has

created a lovely setting in which it is

a pleasure to browse the shelves.

Thanks. This has been an

encouragement to increase the

variety of books on display. Whether

that continues will, of course, depend

on if there is a demand for them.

That also goes for anything that is

stocked in the repository, if an item is

needed and affordable so people buy

it, it will hopefully be possible to stock

it. So feedback from individuals and

parishes will be appreciated and will

help to assure that the repository is

serving the needs of people,

parishes, and groups.

To date, the repository has been

open twice a week as well as on

Sundays after Mass at Sts Peter and

Paul parish. Tuesdays from 8.30am

until 2pm has not been frequented,

so perhaps that day will fall away.

Thursdays from 12 noon until 4pm

seems to be a more popular time,

and so will probably continue.

However, do give your feedback. Do

these times suit you? Do you have

suggestions concerning the

day/times the repository should be

open or what you would buy if it was

stocked. At present, any responses

may be addressed to

[email protected].
