The Results Issue

Well fall is here and so is the longest issue of the Chips. Highlights include the results from a summer of small and full bore matches, Novice open house and notice of our second Prairie Open cut score competition at our Shooting Sports Performance Center located at 711 Leola St..

The indoor 22LR rifle season will be starting soon with Monday nights at Gateway Gun Club and maybe Wednesday nights at Minto Armoury. Note that every third Monday night at Gateway, the Novice program shoots there and has exclusive use on that night. Keep an eye out for Leo’s e-mail as it will mention what night the that program runs and we will be updating the calendar on the M.P.R.A. website.

In the next several issues will also include historical documents from past members and fellow marksman thanks to Doran Sewell. Doran and her husband Don have represented Manitoba and Canada for many years at national and international shooting competitions. Both are also honored in the Manitoba sports Hall of Fame plus Don is in the D.C.R.A. Hall of Fame.

Finally to everyone going hunting, stay safe and send me a photo of your trophy, hunting camp or something that might be of interest to the rest of us. The hunting photo’s in last year addition were a big hit so let’s keep this going.

Thank you to everyone submitting a report and especially to Melissa for helping with the PDF’s.

Never wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty and the pig

likes it.

Training vs. Practice

For much of my 25 shooting career I was pretty mediocre, managing the occasional possible or bar in the meeting; however I just knew that if I could somehow master myself and my technique then I could do much better. It felt like there was a good shooter inside me fighting to get out. If this describes the frustration that you feel about your shooting, then you should probably read on. I can't promise "one weird trick" to make you effortlessly qualify for the next Commonwealth Games or gain your first shooting place on the Palma Team, but I can give you some pointers. The good news is that achieving such goals is within your grasp; I absolutely believe that pretty much anyone can do it. The bad news is that unless you're very naturally talented, it's going to take quite a lot of hard work. Looking back, there seem to be two key points in time where I've made major leaps in performance, each of which correlates with some lesson that I've learned. These haven't been about the specifics of technique; although both of them resulted in changes in technique which later improved my results. Nor have these been about increasing the volume of livefire practice that I've completed, and although the amount of shooting I have done has increased, that has been a consequence of improved performance and the increased number of invitations to tour or shoot in matches that I have received as a result. Rather, these lessons have been much more general in nature. Think of them as philosophies that have informed my approach to my shooting. Lesson 1 - Work out what you're doing wrong. Stop doing it wrong. Start doing it right. Believe it or not, it took me about a decade in shooting to work this one out. It sounds very simple, trivially obvious even, yet when people have asked me for a critique of their position or some other aspect of their technique, and I have made comment about one flaw or another I have often received the answer, "But I've always done that. I don't think it's a problem." It's incredible that such self-deception is possible but I believe that it is relatively common. I was certainly guilty of it for quite a while (see my post One Weird Trick for details.) Note that the person in question knows of the problem, very often they know that it's contrary to the principles of marksmanship, but still they do not perceive that it's a probable cause of poor performance despite the evidence to the contrary. The real issue very often lies not knowing that there is a problem, but in acknowledging it and acting upon that knowledge. Lesson 2 - Stop practising. Start training. The 2007 Palma Team tour was a critical turning point for me, not because I shot brilliantly as an individual and then earned my first Palma Match cap as a shooter. Actually, I shot mediocre groups in the DCRA meeting and the Individual WLRC. As a result, the Captain made the entirely correct decision that I was to be reserve for the Palma Match and plotted both days. While I was delighted that I could still contribute to the team's success, I was gutted that it wasn't as a shooter. In my post-season analysis, I realised that I wasn't learning very effectively, spending most of my time banging rounds down Century and Stickledown ranges. I needed to focus less onpractising, and more on training. As a result of this lesson, I began to do a lot more dry firing, SCATT and visualisation. During my practice sessions, I spent more time on creative exercises. One particular favourite is to mix a few dummy rounds in with lives in a cloth bag and not look when loading, which gives immediate feedback on flinch and follow-through. Speed shooting is also a useful exercise, and a real area for improvement for me as anyone who has coached me can probably tell you. I also spent less time on the range in the following year, but my resultsimproved. Since that time, I've expanded the range of activities that I do to train effectively to include cardio, stretching and other physical activities. I'll talk about some of these in future posts. Conclusions In the 2011 GB Palma Team Brochure I defined practise as "...the constant repetition of existing technique, often flawed..." and training as "...a schedule of highly varied exercises designed to identify and address flaws in technique planned around achieving a defined goal." My guess is that many, if not most fullbore shooters, do

Page 13: Sept 2015 Buffalo Chips - Squarespace The Full-bore- Planning for Phoenix Small-bore- Thinking Prairie Open Sept 2015 Buffalo Chips Like always, if you have any questions, scores,

13

not train effectively and certainly do not have a defined plan to improve and yet they expect somehow to get better. How is this reasonable? Take the time to make an honest appraisal of your shooting, and use the lessons you learn to build yourself a new plan to train, rather than merely to practise. Article Courtesy of : Gaz Morris - GB Fullbore shooter

Please note that with the shooting season coming to an end the dry firing and visualization technices can be practiced at home. But we also have a Scatt trainer at our Shooting Sports Performance Centre that can be used when the schedule allows. If you can find a coach to read the Scatt then form a group and contact Melissa for an opening at the SSPC. A small daily range fee will be required to participate.

Overall our provincial championships at the Range in Portage la Prairie turned out to be a

great facility. We experienced great hospitality from the range members. We were given

access to the club house where we had uninterrupted lunch from the elements. Including

indoor flush toilets.

The weather was reasonable for the Saturday Sporter event , just a little rain.

several members stayed after the match to take advantage of the site and brought some of

their rifle to shoot with.

Sunday was a picture perfect day at the range just below Lake Manitoba.

Katharina Knipping has twosummer weekends crossed offher calendar.

This is one of them. The 17-year-old Brandonite

“We’re all pretty close there, everybody across Manitoba, soit’s great to compete againsteach other and to be aroundeach other too,” Knipping said.

Brandon is sending sevenshooters to provincials thisweekend, including her fatherMichael and 21-year-oldbrother Lukas, along withMatthew Szoradi, Jarrod andDebbie Hoddinott and JeremyFisher.

In early August, she heads tonationals in Beachburg, Ont.,the biggest event in the country. She and her father Michael arethe only Brandon competitorsthis year, with both competingin match.

Sporter rifle is a uniquelyCanadian sport that has biggertargets while match rifle is theinternational equivalent that’scompeted in at the Olympics.

While its her seventh year inthe sport, Knipping only beganshooting match events morerecently, a process made easierwith her recent acquisition ofa new rifle.

Even that process isn’t aseasy as it may seem becauseshe’s a lefthander.

“The guns are usually moreexpensive and sometimes theyhave to be custom-made,” shesaid. “They’re really hard tocome by.”

Not surprisingly, with twoother rifle competitors in thefamily, she entered the sport tocompete against them. Butsoon she discovered it wassomething that she liked.

“I ended up really enjoyingit,” Knipping said. “I found

something that I was good atand that I was able to improveat and that I was able to gofurther with. Plus my brotherand my dad have both stayedin the sport as well so we keepeach other on our toes andgetting better and better everytime.”

It’s paid off for Knipping, who earned her way to theCanada Games in February bywinning silver and bronzemedals at the Prairie Opencompetition and CanadaGames team trials in Winnipeglast November.

Knipping, one of 60competitors in the Prairie Openevent, placed second in the sub-junior age class and finishedthird in the intermediate juniorage class division to secure herspot on Manitoba’s four-member team for the CanadaGames.

She represented the province

in the junior women’s air rifledivision — for competitorsaged 19-and-under — at theWinter Games, finishing 15thin the country individually andninth in team.

Knipping said much haschanged in her time in the sportto allow her to succeed.

“My strength is how muchbetter I’ve gotten at absorbinginformation and learning fromothers,” Knipping said. “At thebeginning I was prettyindependent and didn’t learntoo much. Now that I’velearned more and more andbeen able to expand and acceptchange. You can’t stay in thesame place in the sport; youalways have to be able tochange and get better.”

Events are held acrossCanada during the summer butthe Knippings usually competeonly in provincials andnationals. That makes this

weekend their final competitivetune-up before they head toOntario.

She chuckles when askedwhat her goals are, suggestingthat bringing home medals isalways what she’s after.

She said the toughest part ofher sport isn’t holding the gunsteady; it’s actually holding themind steady.

“I don’t think people quiteunderstand the degree you haveto go to, to be able to flush outany sense of competitors andeveryone around you to be ableto only focus on your target,”Knipping said. “It’s anindividual sport so you can’t fallon your team members. It’s nota team win or a team loss; it’sall on yourself and that can bevery hard sometimes, whetheryou do good or you do bad. It’stough to cope by yourself.”» [email protected]» Twitter: @PerryBergson
