It was interesting to learn the Ches-termere Chiefs atom squad doesn’t keep score when it plays.

Maybe interesting isn’t the correct word here — baffl ing seems a better fi t.

Why oh why wouldn’t a team keep score?

It’s not just the Chiefs, this kind of thing is happening in sports all over the country.

Scores aren’t kept, there are no win-ners, no losers and we celebrate our chil-dren’s every minor victory as if it were an Olympic accomplishment.

Ribbons and trophies are strewn about just for showing up at an event, we hold Grade 2 grad events in a manner befi t-ting the completion of a master’s degree and we tell our kids it’s OK to strike out every time.

It seems no child is allowed to fail, to lose, to scrape a knee or to have hurt feelings.

It is, in a word, the sissyfi cation of a generation.

Without knowing failure, how can one possibly recognize genuine success?

Without keeping score, how would one know if he or she won or lost?

Sure, there are those who say just play-ing the game is fun — but the truth is it’s even more fun when you play and win. For that matter, it’s more fun to play and lose than to play without knowing a score.

It seems with this politically correct “No Kid Goes Unrewarded” mentality, we’re messing up an entire generation who will enter their teen and young adult years with such a sense of entitle-ment that if things do not go swimming-ly every time, then it won’t be worth doing.

We fear for the future of our communi-ties and our country.

Who will run for public offi ce when there’s a distinct chance of losing?

In the real world, you are not rewarded for just showing up.

You will quickly know in the real world if you succeed or fail in your job, your relationships or in any competitive endevour.

So the question is, how are we helping our children when we refuse to allow them to fail now?

CORRECTIONThe Laker incorrectly identified the cover

girl in the Sept. 3 issue as Raegen McFar-lane when in fact it was her sister, Brynne. The Laker apologizes for the error.

Cops are on the lookout for brazen thieves who swiped a vehicle and a trailer from a Ches-termere home.

On the morning of Sept. 2, a Willowmere Close resident discovered his all terrain vehicle and trailer were stolen the night before.

The ATV is described as a dark-green, 2005 Honda four-wheel drive, with serial number TE2655. The trailer is a 2006 silver “Yacht Club” brand.

Chestermere Mounties are also still looking for information about a hit and run that took place late last month. About 10:30 p.m. Aug. 29 a dark green Honda Accord, legally parked along Springmere Place, was struck and significantly damaged by an unidentified vehicle.

The Honda Accord was struck in the rear

quarter-panel and pushed up on to the sidewalk. Police noted yellow paint was transferred to

the Honda Accord from the impact. Neither the vehicle nor the driver have been

identified, however witnesses said there was a house party in the vicinity the same evening.

As a crack head Bernard Maillet could see a finish line and it was grim. Now, 10 years since his last crack

cocaine toke, the now buff Chestermere resident is an accomplished international triathalete and marathon runner and he’s building his own finish line.“I’ve seen the bottom,” said Loop Around the Lake founder Maillet while signing up runners for the Sept. 18 fundraiser.“It came to a time when I decided I wanted to be an asset and not an ass.”The Chestermere Public Library knows Maillet is now an asset: all funds raised from the charity run go directly to the library for whatever improvements it decides upon.“I have a plan to raise $100,000 in 10 years through Loop Around the Lake,” Maillet said. He is also dreaming of when the run will grow to attract 500 runners. “It can and will happen,” he said Wednesday, with a gleam in his eyes. The Second Annual Loop Around The Lake runs in conjunction with the town’s longest running event, the Chestermere Country Fair. The Loop around the Lake offers two new formats, a 1-km kids’ run, a 5.2-km and the

competitive 11.2-km. Chesteremere Coun. Tim Bergen credits Maillet for his hard work and altruistic attri-tude.“I bumped into Bernie a few days ago and thought it was fortunate timing for me as my running parter and wife, Lesley, and I had just completed a 20-km training run the weekend before — I wanted to gloat a bit.”But for Bergen, the 11.2-km Loop around the Lake run last year was not a high point in his running career. “This was not surprising due to my lack of training,” he admitted.“The result was an injured knee that left me unable to run for three months. After some therapy, and a significant amount of train-ing, I am ready to even the score. My wife and I are registered again this year for the 11.2k run.”Families can now easily participate and even bring the pooch and start at the back, away from the competitive runners. Last year there were more prizes than par-ticipants, but this year, “we’ll have less prizes but they will be more special,” said the organizer. The race officially starts at 8 a.m., but “We will have Katie from World Health Club and Fitness to lead a warm-up around 7:30 am for 10-15 minutes,” said MailletPackage pick-up (T-shirts and timing chips) will start at 6:45 am - 7:30 am race morning. The Loop Around the Lake route begins and finishes at Sunset beach.

slightly above the top the ear.2. The top of the headrest should be at least

as high as the top of the head.3. Ideally, the distance between the headrest and the back of the head should be between five and ten centimetres (two to four inches).

YOUTH

Students are back to school for the 2010-2011 school year and

with a new year comes changes at Chestermere Lake Middle School.

The big change is Grade 9 students are not

heading to Chestermere High School as they have in past years. Instead they’ll be staying for another year at CLMS.

Along with this, the Grade 5s, who moved to the middle school in 2004, are now moving back to Prairie Waters Elementary in order to make room for the nines.

So why is this happening? As you all know the town of Chestermere has

been expanding rapidly. Due to this the current grade placement at

Chestermere schools was not able to accommo-date this growth, said Murray Besenski, associ-

ate superintendent of schools of the Rocky View School Division.

The school board recognized this issue and acted by implementing a plan to reconfigure the grade placement.

Through this reconfiguration the schools will be able to maximize its student capacity.

Chestermere High School will now be Grade 10 to Grade 12, CLMS will be Grade 6 to Grade 9 and Prairie Waters Elementary will be kinder-garten to grade five.

Some Grade 9 students at CLMS do not have a problem with staying at the middle school, however, the majority want to go to the high school.

“I don’t like the fact we’re staying because I’ve been stuck here for too long,” said return-ing Grade 9 student Becca Moore.

To accommodate these changes a new team of staff have been assembled to teach these stu-dents.

The staff will be a mixture of existing teach-ers from CLMS and teachers from the high school.

Some high school teachers wanted to teach the Grade 9s and some middle school teachers wanted to take the job.

“We picked the best from both to teach Grade 9,” said Besenski.

One of those teachers said this school year will be “an awesome” experience for every-body.

“It’ll give the kids more of an opportunity to develop skills and confidence,” said Renata Urbanik.

Another change at CLMS is assistant princi-pal Tammy Rahn returns as principal, replac-ing Kim MacKenzie.

Reflecting on the changes at CLMS she said, “We will have a fabulous year.”

The Chestermere Chiefs atom squad is starting the season the way the left off last season.“That is we’re making progress,” said coach Randy Beck. The coach said about half the atom squad is made up of return-ing players.“We’re seeing the veterans taking charge,” he said.“We’re hoping with the experienced guys we’ll just improve game by game.”While no one was supposed to be keeping score, the team knows they went 0-8 last year — a sad statistic players have vowed to avenge.“But,” said Beck, “even with the losses they had fun.”Beck said this year the team seems to have a strong offensive line and “we have some strong, fast runners.”The Chiefs play the Falcons Sunday at Shouldice Park.

Preparations for the 21st An-nual Chestermere Country Fall Fair are in the home

stretch.Organizers are confi dant Mother

Nature will cooperate Sept. 17 and 18 to make sure the fair will con-tinue to impress.

Friday night’s Teen Blast starts at 6 p.m.,and is spread over two out-door stages and features the second annual Battle of the Bands on one grandstand and Guitar Hero on the other.

“There’s not a lot offered in the community for teens,” said Vicki Klinger, the fair’s chief organizer. “Last year we had about 100 to 150 teens participate — we hope to double that number this year.”

The Battle of the Bands is spon-sored by First Fire Productions and fi rst prize is a beaut — the top band will win studio time to help cut a music CD.

Teen Blast is also cheap entertain-ment.

For the $10 entry fee, youths and teens will enjoy the entertainment on both stages, a free round of laser tag and some refreshments.

Teen blast goes from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the rec centre. Jen Peddles-den, chair of the Red Ribbon fair committee, said there’s “lots” of prize money this year.

“I think that people need to be reminded of that,” she said.

Peddlesden said entrants only become known on the Friday when registering.

“We don’t know until Friday afternoon between 1 p.m. and 6:45

p.m. on Sept 17. People will the fi ll out entry forms and then we know what we have.”

It’s bedlam from 6:30 p.m. on with people coming in late, she said.

Peddlesden said this year all Red Ribbon entry fees have been waived.

“It does not cost you a thing.”Eight judges are then invited to

rule in their prospective categories. New this year is a viewing gallery

above the curling rink to watch the judges make their rounds starting at 7 p.m.

Platinum sponsors, such as Epcor, have donated $300 for three $100 prizes and TD Bank’s sponsorship will see the fair offer for the fi rst time, 30, $10 prizes in the kids’ de-partment for exceptional entries.

These $10 prizes are in addition to what kids may win with ribbons.

Peddlesden added prize money for fruits, veggies and herbs, bak-ing, photography and more enjoy growing local sponsorship that has allowed the fair to continue to offer cash prizes and prestige ribbons.

“Our volunteer positions are fi ll-ing up,” said Penny Sawyer, CRCA recreation program assistant, “but we can always use more.”

If you can help, contact [email protected] or Penny at 403-272-7170 ext 228.

The Red Ribbon committee “needs volunteers to help setup early on Friday from 11 to 4 p.m,” said Peddlesden. To lend a hand contact Lennox at [email protected]

This is Corie Solvason’s second year as parade coordinator.

“We almost never know until the

day before how many entrants are participating,” said Solvason.

“Last year, Chestermere’s only parade featured 66 entries,” she said, noting the entries were a re-sult of sending out 100 invitations. This year 150 invitations were sent and 35 have already confi rmed.

Long time fair participant Doro-thy Langair is parade marshal “and is very excited to participate in the parade.” She has tons of experience in the red ribbon competition and is always involved with the fair.

While the parade gets underway at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 18, she said it’s important to meet at Chestermere Lake Middle School staging area at 8:45 a.m. before town crews start closing roads to control traffi c.

As is tradition here, RCMP will lead the parade followed by the

Maxwell Pipe Band then the Ches-termere Army Cadets pull march-ing duty.

New this year and sure to be a crowd pleaser is the Al Azar Shri-ners in their tiny cars.

The Cochrane Queen and Prin-cess will be waving from horseback while the Wild at Heart trick rid-ers — acrobats on horseback — will perform all along the parade route.

Always a crowd favorite, the Lions Club Best Decorated 12 and under kids ride in the parade and will be judged to win cash.

The parade route will wind from the middle school along West Ches-termere Drive to the rec centre and lasts about 30 to 45 minutes.

“10 Market Rules to Remember” –The timeless words of Bob Farrell

Today, we would like to revisit some words of investment wisdom that are ageless. For those who don’t know, Bob Farrell spent several decades as chief stock market analyst at Merrill Lynch & Co. (He retired in 1992, but his famous “10 Market Rules to Remember” have lived on):1. Markets tend to return to the mean over time. When stocks go too far in one direction, they come back. Euphoria and pessimism can cloud people’s heads. It’s easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment and lose perspective.2. Excesses in one direction will lead to an excess in the opposite direction.Think of the market baseline as a pendulum. Any action too far in one direction not only swings you back to the baseline, but also leads to an overshoot in the opposite direction.3. There are no new eras – excesses are never permanent.Whatever the latest hot sector is, it eventually overheats, reverts back to the mean, and then overshoots. Look at how far the emerging markets and BRIC nations ran over the six years prior to the crisis, only to plunge by more than 60%. (As the fever builds, a chorus of “this time it’s different” will be heard, even if those exact words are never used…)4. Exponential rapidly rising or falling markets usually go further than you think, but they do not correct by going sideways.Regardless of how hot a sector is, don’t expect a plateau to work off the excesses. Profits are locked in by selling, and that invariably leads to a significant correction.5. The public buys the most at the top and the least at the bottom. That’s why contrarian-minded investors can make good money if they follow sentiment indicators and aim to remove emotion from the equation. (Easier said than done)6. Fear and greed are stronger than long-term resolve.Gains make us exuberant; they enhance well-being and promote optimism. Whereby, losses bring sadness, disgust, fear, regret. Fear increases the sense of risk and some react by shunning stocks.7. Markets are strongest when they are broad and weakest when they narrow to a handful of blue-chip names. This is why breadth and volume are so important. Think of it as strength in numbers. *Watch for when momentum channels into a small number of stocks.8. Bear markets have three stages – sharp down, reflexive rebound and a drawn-out fundamental downtrend. We would suggest that the reflexive rebound is nearing maturity. We have yet to see the long-drawn-out fundamental portion of this bear market.9. When all the experts and forecasts agree – something else is going to happen.Going against the herd can be very profitable, especially for patient buyers who raise cash from frothy markets and reinvest it when sentiment is darkest.10. Bull markets are more fun than bear markets.Especially if you are long only or mandated to be fully invested. When times are toughest, the true advisor shines, and the agent wanes.

Best Regards and Safe Investing.

Please allow me to introduce

myself. My name is

Lynne Ring and I am the Organizing Guru. I’ll be here each week to help you get your life back and to learn how to control that monster called CLUTTER!

Clutter has been around for a very long time so why the need for someone to help you get organized?

Well, I really believe our lives have become so busy with so much to do — and everything’s urgent — there doesn’t seem to be enough time in a day to get everything done.

Sound familiar? We just keep throwing stuff into piles, or making piles of paper in the corner until one day we look around and OMG what happened? When our lives get to that point, it becomes overwhelming, then paralysis takes over and we don’t know where to start.

In the meantime, we have our jobs, our kids, our families and everything else going on in our lives, so often what happens is the big P —pro-crastination — rears it’s ugly head and things only get worse.

That’s where a professional organizer comes in. Have you heard of us? If not, you’re not alone. It’s a relatively new industry in Canada.

Our national association, Professional Orga-nizers in Canada, was formed in 2000 and there are now more than 500 members across our country.

Our members are organizing professionals from all sectors of the industry, comprising resi-dential and office organizers, time management and goal setting professionals, estate organizing experts and many, many more.

At this point I want to tell you that there are both men and women who are profession-al organizers, however for simplicity’s sake I’ll use “she” because I’m a she.

She can help you to sort through the piles, help you keep the things that are relevant and important in your life and dispose of those things you no longer need.

She is an objective opinion that helps you to see what you really need and no longer have use for.

She can help you organize your home, your home office, your business office, your garage, your day, your life, whatever it is that needs her help!

Each week we’ll tackle a facet of organizing and explore the ways of getting organization into your life.

Sort the Clutter, Ease Your Mind — that’s my goal!

I’m here to help you de-clutter your space, your time, even your life and to help you enjoy the free time you’ll have!

Now you may be asking yourself, it sounds like a lot of work, why would I bother?

There are so many benefits of having an organized space, an organized mind, an orga-

nized office, etc. 1. When your space is organized you have a

harmonious environment — remember a clut-tered space really does make for a cluttered mind. 2. You’ll have more time when everything has

a home and you know where it is. Have you ever thought of how much time you waste look-ing for things?3. You’ll have more room for belongings that

are relevant to your life. 4. You’ll save money that’s wasted by pur-

chasing duplicates of lost items. This can be huge — I had a client that had multiples of many things in her home because she couldn’t remember where she had left them, so out she would go and buy another. We found eight bot-tles of Windex throughout her home. This same client had 19 pairs of black pants! 5. You will have a safer environment — no

tripping over stuff anymore!6. Your home will once again become your

sanctuary. We all deserve a place where we can go to really relax and rejuvenate.

There are many more benefits that we will delve into in the weeks to come.

Now that’s enough for this week. Please take some time to think of how your life would be if it were more organized. How would it look? How would you feel? Together we’ll explore the ways to make your space and your life a bet-ter place, so you can be that happy little camper who has time to enjoy your friends, family and all of the things you love to do!

I want to leave you with this thought: Whether you think you can or think you can’t — you’re right!

See you next week,LynneQuestions? Please email Lynne@organizing-

KILLERS a comfortable fit on the home tube

Boy meets girl, falls in love, gets married and moves to the suburbs.

Girl discovers hubby is a former spy with 15 kills on his resume and a $20 million bounty on his head.

The result is a PG rated mix of action, ro-mance and hilarity.

Sounds like the premise for a TV series. Maybe that’s why KILLERS (100 mins. PG)

fi ts so comfortably on the home screen. In fact, all of the stars of this feature length

movie got their fi rst big break on network tele-vision.

Ashton Kutcher of That 70s Show fame is Spencer Aimes, a swinging secret agent who fi rst meets Jen Kornfeldt (Greys Anatomy’s Kath-erine Heigl) on the beach in the south of France where she has been taken by her overprotective father (former Magnum P.I. hunk Tom Selleck) to recuperate after being dumped by her latest boyfriend because she was, according to her affably alcoholic mom (SCTV vet Catherine O’Hara), “too safe and predictable.”

MOM: He tried to get you to go bungee jumping. You wouldn’t do it.

JEN: I have a thing about heights and a rule about vomiting in public.

Talk about safe and predictable. The fi rst half of this movie is inert. Things liven up only when Jen learns about

Spencer’s double life. (“Let’s just say I work for the blah, blah, blah

and I have a license to blah,” he says by way of explanation.)

Most of Spencer’s friends and co-workers turn out to be professional killers who spend the second half of the movie chasing him around the neighbourhood looking to collect the bounty with his surprisingly adaptable wife along for the ride.

This is another one of the movies that should only be seen with a bunch of friends with un-demanding tastes in movies, television and/or pizza and beer.

Ms. Heigl demonstrates a fl air for light com-edy and certainly qualifi es as eye candy in this reviewer’s book and yet the focus here is on her co-star.

According to the DVD featurette, Kutcher spent a lot of time getting “jacked up” for the role (in the words of cast mate Rob Riggle, who plays one of Spencer’s homicidal co-workers) and the actor isn’t shy about showing off his newly-toned physique.

It’s Heigl’s character that’s depicted as drool-ing helplessly during their fi rst date while Kutcher gets to act cool and amused by her

obvious attraction to his manly assets. “You know, I keep thinking I’m going to

build up some kind of tolerance to his physical godlike perfection,” Jen tells her mother,” but it hasn’t happened yet.”
