Message from the Director Page 2
When I meet people who demur from exploring Senior Center programs, I tease them a bit. I note that they don't hesitate to take advantage of the break in ferry fares or the discount movie tickets that come along with certain birthdays, so there is no reason they should cut themselves out of the privileges of
participating in our programs, events and trips.
There's lots to take advantage of at the Center, and it adds a zing that can
balance the sting of aging. As Bob Leik's sing-along lyric has it: "We're not getting older ‘cuz we're having too much fun."
I think we delivered that message loud and clear in this year's Grand Old Fourth Parade—our impressive turnout of marchers and dancers (the "Prime Time Steppers") and my role as grand marshal showed
the community how vibrant and varied our activities are. I'm thrilled that the Senior Center was the
winner of the Buxton/Ellis award for the most humorous parade entry! Thank you to everyone who participated in the parade, and the photo show, and our booth. Together you offered an open community invitation to explore BISCC.
And, a big thank you to everyone who participated in our annual Jumble Sale. We received some wonderful donations, many hours of pricing & organizing, and
then the event itself—your hard work paid off! Our fundraisers (like The Edge event coming on Sept. 14) make it possible for us to offer trips and programs for the lowest possible cost. Thank you for supporting the Center in these many ways.
We have some great programs on tap for this fall, and I encourage you to drop by on a different day or time than you might normally. I also continue to encourage you to try out our daily lunch; it's only a $3 donation for people over 60. We post the lunch menus on our website: look under "Resources." Register
the day before.
Finally, we've started using a new service for our weekly email updates. If you
were getting the emails and aren't any more, try looking for mail from "[email protected]" and mark it as a safe sender in your email contacts.

This is a chance for you to get to know the candidates, find out what they stand for, and to ask questions.
All four Council seats are up for grabs. If past candidate
forums are an indication, this should be a lively and informative session.
There are a number of issues to come before the Council next year that will affect both the Senior Center and the
senior community here on Bainbridge. We need Council members who are sensitive to our needs. Your attendance at this forum is critical.

Housing Resources Bainbridge - September is Fall Prevention Month! The Independent Living Program is all about fall prevention! The Program Manager Julie Stone is available to assess, and modify elements placing residents at risk in their home environment. The City of Bainbridge Island is funding repairs to improve accessibility such as: the installation of ADA bathroom fixtures; grab bars; improved entryways; safe flooring; and improved function in the kitchen. Falls threaten safety and independence generating enormous economic and personal costs. One third of Americans aged 65+ fall each year. Every 13 seconds an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall. Every 20 minutes an older adult dies from a fall. Julie Stone, Independent Living Manager 206-842-1909 ext. 17; [email protected].
GET RID OF YOUR EXTRA MEDICATIONS! - You can take unwanted or expired

amber-colored bottles cannot be recycled, so don’t put them in the recycling bin.
DO YOU HAVE YOUR PARKING STICKER? - Paid-up members can get a parking
sticker for their windshield from the office, which is good for parking along Brien Drive while you are

COOKING WITH KATHRYN Kathryn Lafond, author of the Seasoned with Gratitude cookbook, prepares tasty recipes every other month in our dining room for participants who register in advance for the opportunity to get cooking ideas and to sample her culinary delights. Below are excerpts from Kathryn’s story of how she began and where the love of cooking has taken her. My food-related journey began in southwest Washington where my father taught in a fairly poor school district and mother fed us on a shoestring. At times, we couldn’t get bread or milk until payday. The youngest of four sisters, I was a typical child who took food for granted. Because my household chores did not involve cooking, when I left home at nineteen, I could not fix Jell-O without ruining it and my cookies were hard as rocks. It was my love of sailing than eventually led to my becoming a serious cook. While vacationing in the Bahamas one spring, I was invited to be a member of the crew transporting a 50’ steel-hulled schooner to the US Virgin Islands. After delivery of the schooner I was offered a job as chef on a charter boat. Knowing this was my ticket to staying in the Caribbean, I jumped at the offer then panicked as I realized a charter chef was expected to prepare twenty-one gourmet meals plus appetizers each week. I had to learn to cook! For forty days before the beginning of the charter season I practiced on friends and family back in Seattle. My brother-in-law, an acclaimed, self-taught chef shared some of his favorite recipes. Besides cooking I had to learn provisioning and how to work with limited raw ingredients while sailing in the Caribbean. Although I faced a steep learning curve, I was comforted by discovering that Julia Child didn’t begin to cook seriously until she was in her late thirties. After six months of on-the-job training as chef and first mate in the US Virgin Islands, I moved to the British Virgin Islands to work for a well-known charter company. Now I had to learn to make gourmet meals from even fewer ingredients. No matter what you try, you cannot turn Spam into pate’ de foie gras. It was during these charters that I fell in love with cooking and decided I wanted to study culinary arts. Through the experiences of being a chef and caterer, mother and herbalist, farmer and gardener and now healer and health coach I have become not only a lover of food but someone deeply grateful for all the life-forms that share our planet and contribute to our sustenance. The key to a nourishing diet is to eat live foods, grown sustainably with reverence for what plants and animals need for quality of life: clean air, water, soil and sunlight. Live foods --- fresh vegetable, fruits, nuts, whole grains, dairy (from animals not altered with hormones), eggs and animals raised sustainably --- all offer the nutrients our bodies crave. So sign up for a Cooking with Kathryn class and find out for yourself how good food can taste. (See page 6 for her next scheduled presentation.)
I spice up life by “gingerly” choosing to “preserve” my gratitude and let it flow!
~Kathryn Lafond
