D.H. Lawrence sought inspiration for his writing from memories of his youth in Nottinghamshire. Although he could often be acerbic about Nottinghamshire, he called it ‘the country of my heart’. Through his creative work, he made the area famous around the world.
In this performance, students from local schools will explore Lawrence’s nostalgic feelings, finding inspiration in his poems, novels, and plays.
Josh finds the outside world a fascinating and frightening place. At a time when he is most vulnerable, a room of forgotten things quickly becomes the perfect place for him to escape reality.
An honest and uplifting show about fear and the impact our decisions have on those we care about, told through movement, poetic text and visual inventiveness.

NOTTDANCE
Nora is dancers Stephanie McMann, Eleanor Sikorski and Flora Wellesley Wesley, three friends who have been dancing together with zeal, humour and love for almost a decade. They have invited the American choreographer Deborah Hay, who has been making exquisite, radical dances for over 50 years, to make this new piece that asks for dance to be looked at differently.
BESIDE questions the construction of truth, fake news and the role the body can play in the credibility of what is said in the media.
Performers say what they hear on the local radio in the moment, whilst their movement score is made of gestures from public affairs television programmes. Does the abundance of information prevent us from understanding each other?
Gone the predator, no do-gooders around, everything moves, inextricably bound.”

This introduction to a lost world brings to life music that echoed around St Mark’s, entertained nobility in sumptuous palaces on the Grand Canal, or was performed in the winding streets and open squares of this most captivating of cities.
Manchester Collective plays on the idea of ‘transformation’ in this programme. The Collective commissioned Edmund Finnis’ The Centre is Everywhere for 12 solo string players and performed the premiere at the Southbank Centre in July. Alongside this new work we hear transformations of different kinds in the music of Ligeti, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, with Rakhi Singh as soloist, and Richard Strauss’s emotionally devastating work composed in the ruins of Dresden during the closing months of the Second World War.

Ivon Hitchens (1893-1979) is much loved for his landscapes featuring swathes of bright colour.
This exhibition considers the full scope of the artist’s career spanning a remarkable six decades.
In the 1920s and ’30s, Hitchens was part of London’s avant garde and profoundly influenced by artists such as Cézanne, Matisse and Braque. His retreat from the capital to Sussex at the outset of WWII
The exhibition is curated by Anne Goodchild and Simon Martin and is a partnership between Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, and Djanogly Gallery.
gave rise to an extraordinary body of paintings that was truly international in spirit although the greatest part of his work was produced in six acres of woodland surrounding his home.
Through continued experimentation and a heightening of his colour palette, his works were, in the last decade of his life, almost completely abstract, whilst still rooted in the landscape that had provided his inspiration since the war.

FULLY FASHIONED: ARCHIVAL REMNANTS OF THE TEXTILE TRADE
Friday 6 September – Sunday 1 December Open Tuesday-Friday, 11am-4pm Saturday & Sunday, 12noon-4pm Closed on Mondays Weston Gallery Admission free
Using photographs, marketing materials and business records from the University of Nottingham’s lace and hosiery archive collections, this exhibition explores surviving evidence of the textile trade which was once a major feature of the East Midlands. Other collections reveal the struggle for workers’ rights, from the targeted campaign of machine breaking by the Luddites of the East Midlands (in protest at unfair pay and the
introduction of ‘cut ups’ in favour of the superior fully-fashioned stockings), to the development of unions such as the Nottingham-based Amalgamated Society of Operative Lace Makers and Auxiliary Workers. The exhibition illustrates the rise and eventual decline of the trade, as it struggled to survive the ravages of war, the vagaries of fashion, and the battle to compete with cheap imports. The exhibition also reflects upon the way that Nottingham’s lace heritage and the spirit of the Luddites continue to inspire tourists, artists, and activists.
The exhibition has been curated by staff from Manuscripts and Special Collections at the University of Nottingham.

LAST SUPPER IN POMPEII Dr Paul Roberts, Keeper of Antiquities Ashmolean Museum
Most people know that William the Conqueror defeated Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, becoming king of England. But what did this conquest mean for ordinary English citizens? Studying the coins from the period can reveal some surprising stories of the people living through this period of political change.
Anja Rohde has just completed her PhD research on the coins of William the Conqueror and William Rufus. For this she drew together the largest dataset of these coins yet compiled, and undertook a detailed examination to reveal new narratives of early Norman England. This talk presents some of her findings.
