THE CITY #THECITY#

The Jongno-gu area of Seoul is one of themost fascinating districts, symbolising theduality of Seoul as both ancient andmodern. Here the historic palaces and theold quarter of Insadong sit aside Daehaknoor University St, which is the centre foralternative art and is brimming withgalleries, theatres, restaurants and bars.

This dichotomy between the ancient andthe modern is also seen in the district ofGangam, where skyscrapers tower abovethe delicate architecture ofGyeongbukgung Palace. As the city’scommercial centre Gangam is moreworkmanlike than other areas of the city. However, like Myeongdong the city’sfinancial district, Gangam is also becomingknown for its restaurants and bars.

Missing home? Then head for Itaewon theinternational hub of Seoul, whereexpatriates, tourists and locals gather. It isknown for its legendary nightlife whereWestern style pubs and nightclubsproliferate. Failing that a spot of retailtherapy in the Namdaemun andDongdaemun areas should cure all!
