A Round-up of Sensory Products: Flavours/Palatants/Sweeteners, Colourants/Pigmenters
AzeliS Azelis Animal Nutrition
o f fe rs an ex tens ive
range of feed flavours
and sweeteners, working
with supply partners Phytobiotics and Symrise. The well-established,
extensive Bigarol® range covers savoury, fruity, milky/creamy and
spicy options developed to optimise both smell and taste of feeds for
livestock and pets.
Bigarol® flavours are available in powder, encapsulated (for longer
lasting sensory effects and improved stability), liquid (water soluble)
or oil soluble formulations. Expert advice is on hand to ensure that
selected flavours are compatible with certain feed ingredients, such
as fishmeal and fats. Use of an incompatible flavour means that the
unpleasant taste may not be masked, so it is essential to ensure that
the correct flavour for each application is chosen.
Azelis also offers three sweeteners: Piggysweet is a uniquely
formulated sweetener specifically designed for inclusion in piglet diets
up to four months of age. Trials have proven it to outperform a leading
sweetener when included in the diets of weaned piglets.
Appitello Naturale is an entirely natural sweetener, produced from
plant extracts and designed to enhance the palatability of animal feed
in situations where saccharin based sweeteners are not permitted. It
has a sweetening power approximately 300 times greater than sucrose
making it a highly effective natural solution. It is suitable for use in all
species and there is no upper dose limit.
Phytosweet is a plant-derived appetising additive with a pleasant,
hay-like scent. With a sweetening power 40 – 50 times that of sugar,
it allows reduced dietary molasses inclusions whilst still boosting feed
intake.
Azelis Animal Nutrition also carries a broader range of other
sensory additives approved for either feed or food applications including
colours such as Red Iron Oxide and Titanium Dioxide.
Other flavours that have a positive effect on intake with prebiotic
qualities such as natural and toasted Carob powders (Caromic 105/500)
are available in various grades for use in a wide range of formulations
for feeds and supplements across all species.

BASF PlcThe BASF Lucantin® portfolio
has a wide range of effective
applications, and is used
primarily in poultry and aqua
feeds.
Lucantin ® CX Forte (Citranaxanthin)
This red carotenoid is used exclusively in poultry rations in order to
impart redness to egg yolks. A close relative of the yellow pigment C-30
ester, citranaxanthin is efficiently assimilated and deposited in yolks,
where it contributes to the consumer appeal of eggs and egg products.
Used in conjunction with yellow pigments, citranaxanthin increases
yolk colour intensity to meet market demands for golden-orange yolks.
Citranaxanthin has been applied in this field for approximately 30 years
and well known for its excellent colouring properties.
Lucantin® Yellow ( Apocarotenoic C-30 ester)
Lucantin® Yellow is primarily used in combination with Lucantin® CX
Forte to obtain the desired yolk or broiler skin colour
Lucantin® Pink ( Astaxanthin)
Astaxanthin is the carotenoid that provides the pink-red pigmentation,
that is a familiar characteristic of salmon and shrimps. With Lucantin®
Pink, BASF offers a high quality pigmenter in an effective and
practicable formulation for the production of aqua feed. To protect
oxygen sensitive nutrients, BASF has developed a sophisticated
technology. The specific formulation process ensures the outstanding
stability of the final product together with high bioavailability.

Crina® Protect a novel way to protect feed efficiency
We are all aware of the challenges facing dairy producers currently
even with milk prices rising and improving from the extreme lows of
2016. Efficiency is key.
Crina® Protect is a new innovative form of Crina® for Ruminants
specific produced with a spray chilled coating to ensure 100% delivery
of the volatile botanical components into the rumen to ensure efficacy.
we can discuss the various options.

However, there are additional benefits of the Crina® Protect in that is
less volatile and therefore has reduced odour and improved safety of
handling. New data shows that the unique combination of botanical
components optimise rumen fermentation for health, performance and
efficiency. Crina® Protect functions by utilising the natural plant defence
systems; these defences cause a change in rumen bacterial profile
which results in increased propionate production and a decrease in
protein degradation and rumen ammonia. Ultimately, this means more
propionate and protein reaches the cow from the rumen, leading to
more glucose, energy and protein to produce milk from the same feed
intake. Typically, milk production response are 1.5-2.0kg of milk and
feed efficiency is improved by about 8%.
This gives a return on investment even at the lower end of milk
prices of in excess of 4:1, equalling to approximately £1000 extra
income per 100 cows per month through improved efficiency.
Crina® Protect is a novel
truly innovative easy and safe to
handle botanical component that
increase milk yield and protects
feed efficiency.

KAeSler NutritioN GMBHEarly feed intake in piglets – Flavours at the crucial point of
performance
Although your piglets may not have seen the last invoice from
purchasing their prestarter diet, the impression could arise they feel
shy to eat such expensive feed. Indeed, achieving an early intake of
solid feed pre- and post-weaning represents a challenge in many pig
nurseries. At less than a month of age, piglets experience the stressful
weaning at a time when their digestive maturity is not yet fully reached.
However, reduced feed intake for several days, sometimes connected
with low water intake, causes a persisting disadvantage compromising
performance in the fattening unit.
Complex nursery nutrition programs are available today, reflecting
the paramount importance of this growth phase. They focus on high
quality feed raw materials (proteins, lactose) to ensure optimum
digestibility and reduced protein level with balanced amino acid profile
to support both, gut health and feed intake. Especially in the first two
weeks when the intake of solid feed is still low, with some piglets not
eating at all, make sure that what is offered is fresh. Simply spoken,
the best concept will fail if piglets do not like to eat their feed.
Piglets are curious by nature and the presentation of solid feed in
the farrowing unit potentially draws their interest. One element of the
Cuxarom concept is to start using a specific flavour in creep feed and
continue this flavour post-weaning.
Alternatively, a sweet, vanilla-type flavour adjusted to the aroma
profile of milk increases the acceptability and feed intake at weaning,
as was shown in a recent study (1) where weaned piglets significantly
preferred the Cuxarom vs. the non-flavoured starter.
Cuxarom – flavour concepts for every taste, milk-type for young
piglets, optionally in combination with sweeteners and fruit-type for
older piglets. Better performance with Cuxarom.

additives and feed additive
concepts for the animal
nutrition market. In short:
we create, select and deliver. We offer both in-house developed and
branded products as well as distribution products. Orffa’s brands,
Elovitals, Excentials and Top Select, stand for exceptional quality as
well as proven and documented efficiency.
One of the products in the Top Select line is the line of Capsantal
natural pigments. These products are produced starting from agricultural
products, carefully harvested and selected for the quality and content
in carotenoid pigments. Capsantal EBS Is a yellow pigmenter, mainly
based on lutein with a high percentage of trans isomers, obtained
from extracts of Marigold flowers (Tagetes erecta) carefully stabilized,
homogenized and saponified to give maximum intestinal absorption
and biological efficiency. Capsantal FS Is a red pigmenter, mainly
based on trans-capsanthin, obtained through a highly developed
process of extraction from selected varieties of peppers (Capsicum
annum), carefully processed to potentiate the natural red colour of
their pigments. Besides the powder form, Capsantal is also available
in an easy to handle micro pearl. Natural pigments make it possible
to obtain a high level pigmentation of the broiler skin and the egg yolk
based on natural and biological products.

PANcoSMA SAPancosma is the leading
company in the research,
development, production
and worldwide sales of
palatants used in animal
feed. Based on advanced research and innovation, Pancosma creates
palatants, which bring real value to an increasingly specialized area
of animal nutrition.
Since it was established in 1947, Pancosma has been refining
the technology used in the production of palatants, to improve feed
palatability and encourage higher feed intake, which is crucial for
optimal animal productivity. Our sophisticated flavours have a powerful
impact in the nose and oral epithelium. In addition, Pancosma’s market
leading sweetener and taste enhancer, SUCRAM®, has a strong and
unique effect on the tongue and the lingual epithelium.
We have proved that palatants not only target the oral and
lingual epithelium, but also positively affect nutrient uptake in the gut.
A sophisticated research program has demonstrated that the gut is
indeed an epithelial surface with sensory properties, able to perceive
its environment and adapt to it. This concept of Intelligent Gut Action
ensures that Pancosma’s palatants improve feed palatability, increase
feed intake, and enhance the absorption of nutrients in the gut, providing
greater flexibility in feed formulation.
All products are manufactured using the unique Iso-Fusion
Technology® production process (micro-sized particles with uniform
homogeneity). Pancosma’s palatants are scientifically developed,
tested by an in-house panel, and validated by the highest scientific
protocols to meet our customer’s expectations.
