    Heat and Dust is a novel which tells the tales of two

    young British women, Olivia and the narrator, who lived

    in India during different times.

    Dan Rayburn and Charlie Reed are best friends and co-owners of a successful sports

    marketing firm. Seven years prior, Dan, recently divorced, married Vicki after being

    whisked away by Charlie for a tropical vacation. The wedding, however, is short lived.

    Loneliness

    Olivia feels lonely and displaced in India, neither fitting in with the

    locals nor the British officers and their wives.

    to have someone feel the same way as herself; she hadnt so far met

    anyone in India who did. Not even her Douglas.

    Loneliness around loved ones

    There is a sense of loneliness in Dan due to his short lived marriage 7 years ago. What

    makes thing worse is that his friend , Charlie uses this story as a regular joke.

    .is the only guy I know thats been divorced in a 24 hour period

    So he wrote a letter to his ex wife

    Acceptance in a foreign country

    The narrator is accepted by India, eventually blending into the

    Indian community and culture.

    we are part of the town, part of peoples lives here, and have

    been completely accepted.

    no longer change into nightie but sleep like an Indian woman, in

    a sari.

    Acceptance

    The twins have accepted Dan as their father and also accepted

    Charlie as their uncle after spending time together for two weeks.

    its like we have two dads!

    Vicki accepts Dan and gives him a change to be close with the kids.

    My kids are already 7 So, I thought, maybe its time.they got to know who is

    their father

    The singer loves his partner very much, and is always thinking of her.

    There have not changed for the better in India after 50 years

    country especially when it dont have a capable

    avoid a disastrous relationship.

    We must convey love to the children and must show them good examples to them

    Emily thinks her father as a hero in her lifeHe tries to win her heart by acting as a king as she always thought him as a hero.

    Love between family and friends

    Dans although busy with his business, but he tries his best to take care of his twin kidsCharlie who is only a close friend of Dan lets Dan and his kids to stay in his house. Healso play his role to take care the children by attending a camping with them.

    Make sure that the relationship between a father and a child

    The separation between lovers is hard, but it strengthens the bond between them. Bymaking them wish to be together, they will cherish the times they had together

    Juxtaposition / Parallelism

    The stories of the two women are told with the similar experiences placed together.

    It emphasises the comparison between Olivia and the narrator.

    Telling the story through the perspective of a diary

    The novel is told through the memoirs of the narrator and her interpretation of

    Olivias story as she reads it from her letters to Marcia.

    This gives the reader a glimpse into the narrators thoughts.

    We never find out the narrators name throughout the entire novel.

    The flashback technique is used in OLD DOGS to relate the story and to improve

    the continuity of the film.

    Conclusion

    What all three texts have in common is that there is a sense of belonging andalso non-belonging in all levels of society, family, friends, peers, and

    community.

    All three texts talk about the loneliness of those who do not belong.

    This drives them to do bold things. Some choose to change and adapt to

    the crowd, and others choose to challenge these conventions.

    Above all these, there is one common

    message which unites the entire theme

    of the presentation:
