Global Manufacturer Migrates Business Intelligence to the Cloud

Customer Profile Our client is a global manufacturing company with operations in 7 countries. With over 11,000 employees worldwide, this $2B+ global manufacturer of sensors and controls supplies customers across a broad range of markets, including automotive, aerospace, and mobile communications.

Business Problem Our client had an immediate need to implement Oracle HR Analytics built on their Oracle Business Intelligence platform. However, with an upcoming datacenter migration, all hardware decisions were on hold pending a long term data center solution. They had a short, 3 month window to implement their HR system without purchasing any new hardware.

SolutionApps Associates proposed a solution based on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform to host OBIEE 11g and BI Analytics. Starting with a proof of concept, we demonstrated the speed and ease of use of the AWS platform, and rapidly moved to deployment of a test and development solution.

Eventually we helped client to migrate their OBIEE production operations to the AWS cloud. This rapid deployment enabled the client to go live on AWS within 3 months.

Apps Associates consultants designed and implemented this solution using AWS Elastic Compute Cloud which enables scalable growth of the environment, as well as Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) for secure operations. Leveraging deep experiences within the OBIA platform, Apps Associates was able to provide a complete solution from Infrastructure through Database and BI architecture, which led to wider adoption of AWS and OBIEE technologies within the organization.

The solution provided business critical information and as a result it had to be continuously available to users. Apps Associates provisioned multiple VPN (Virtual Private Network) connections from our client’s corporate MPLS network for redundancy. As adoption of OBI on AWS grew within our client’s organization it became cost effective to move the solution to Amazon’s Reserved Instances from the On-Demand service that we’d started with. This is a more cost effective solution when there is a consistent demand for computing capacity.
