White Elephant Gift Exchange
On December 7, 2011
After the Pearl Harbor Remembrances, the Happy Hands group will play this game, which is usually played at Christmas gatherings with friends for fun. The objective of this game is to open, ex-change, and “steal” a gift. We’d like everyone to bring a wrapped gift. You can bring a gift that you no longer use. Do not put your name on the gift. This item should be some-thing that a person would want or could use. If
your gift is small, put it in a big box. This is a fun game and really can get us going. Come and bring a gift to the Happy Hands Luncheon on December 7th. We’d like to see many gifts under the tree. Before the game begins, Carolyn Willis will explain the simple rules. If you have any questions, please contact Kenny Hynes at [email protected].

John Harper had surgery for his broken lumbar vertebrae early in November, and is now staying at Commonwealth Skilled Nursing Facility for his physical therapy. Thanks to Dora Ing for this ad-dress: Commonwealth Skilled Nursing, 43150 Chain Bridge Rd., Fairfax, VA. I’m sure John would welcome get-well cards and/or visits.
Good news! Mary Malzkuhn has returned to her home after getting excellent care at a facility for her physical therapy in Reston.
Gary Viall is in the middle of his two-month recovery from his successful prostate cancer surgery. He is getting better each day. The annual PSA test helps to detect early cancer for men above 40. Peggy Schmidt hopes that friends from Happy Hands would pay her mother, Elizabeth Allen a visit. Peggy can be contacted at [email protected] to make arrangements for visits with Elizabeth.
Annie Dickens is doing good, and staying with her son (Jimmie) in Linden, VA. She goes to physical therapy twice a week for shoulder. She misses Happy Hands, and wishes you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Her email address is [email protected].
Update on LaVerne Jenkins
LaVerne Jenkins was mentioned in the November 2011 issue of NEWS ON THE BRIDGE (Dominion Village of Poquoson). URL: http://dominionvillagepoquoson.com/
Resident of the Month:
Congratulations to LaVerne Jenkins for being chosen as our resident of the month for November 2011. LaVerne was born on September 26, 1918 in Caldwell County, NC. LaVerne married Ace Jen-kins in 1968. Ace passed away in 1973, and they didn’t have any children. However, LaVerne has a loving, caring and dedicated cousin (Lindy) whom she loves like a daughter. LaVerne has overcome many obstacles including being deaf. She attended and graduated from Gallaudet University. She was employed for many years as a clerk in a government accounting office. Her previous hobbies were collecting salt & pepper shakers, reading, quilting, and sewing. LaVerne is a wonderful, kind, gentle, loving, and caring person. She is such a joy to have in our community where she has been a resident since 2010. Congratulations, Laverne!! Source: Selina Gilson

Where did Thanksgiving go? Did you count your blessings? And did you lose track of all your bless-ings? I did! Before 1970, we had no captioning on our TVs! http://www.ncicap.org/caphist.asp Before 1968, we had no TTYs. http://www.tdiforaccess.org/advocacy.aspx?key=Advocacy(History)&select=Advocacy Before 1964, there was no RID--interpreters were mostly family, friends and/or church members. http://rid.org/aboutRID/overview/index.cfm
Lastly, but not the least, the NAD! All the above are things we can see and use. Since 1880, the NAD has given us something so invisible yet priceless: constantly and continually increasing our right to equal access. www.nad.org.
Now, it is the Christmas season, already. What am I dreaming of? No, not for a White Christmas--that’s for the snow lovers! Although I love watching snow fall, I just wish it
would disappear before I have to go out and shovel. I know we all wish everyone a very joyous albeit SAFE Christmas.
