ABOUT US

We are an IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and receive support from the City of Blaine, Whatcom County Parks & Recreation, Blaine-Birch Bay Parks & Recreation District 2 and local businesses and organizations. To learn more about the programs and events offered request one of our monthly newsletters or visit www.blaineseniorcenter.org

The Blaine Senior Center does not provide services that would normally be provided by a trained attendant, nurse or personal caregiver (e.g. incontinence, inability to use the restroom facilities by one’s self, or preventing participant from leaving the grounds of the Center). The provision of any personal care by staff for a participant is beyond our capability and cannot be expected.

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE I’m excited to say our new website has been launched – www.blaineseniorcenter.org. This is been a joint effort between me and the staff. The original website www.blaineseniorcenter.com has now been shut down. So, if you “google” Blaine Senior Center you might not find it at the top. Bear with this, scroll until you see the new .org website. Many are calling as they can’t find the lunch menu. It’s there - be patient and look a bit harder. The more we “google,” the more the website will rise to the top. I’m delighted to say that the Bellingham Norwegian Male Chorus will be performing at lunch on December 17th! Larry Peterson, one of our members is part of the Chorus and I am honored that they will be singing for us. I hope you all put this on your calendar. Let us know so that Melody can prepare lunch accordingly. And don’t forget we have planned some holiday day trips. We have people already signed up for some of the Christmas excursions! The Victorian Country Christmas (12/05/19) and Van Dusen Festival of Lights (12/12/19) should get everyone in the Christmas spirit! For those trips, we will be leaving out of the Birch Bay-Lynden plaza. We also have planned a tour at our own Van Wingerden’s Nursery to see the poinsettias in full bloom! If interested, please sign up near the front desk. For those that don’t drive, we can arrange a carpool. We have arranged for a presentation by the Hearing, Speech & Deaf Center. If people are interested after this, Joel Bergsbaken, the Director of HSDC will set up a time for individual consultations in the following months. Separately, Clear Captions will be hear a few times this month offering vision assisted phones for those with hearing difficulties. It was a busy year and now is the time to reflect and to enjoy your time with friends and family. To many, the Center is your family. May your holiday season be filled with love and hugs – we can’t get enough of them! Happy holidays to all of you from all of us!

HEARING CHANGES SEMINAR PRESENTED BY - JOEL BERGSBAKEN Wednesday, December 4 12:30pm - 1:30pm As we age, we all experience changes to our hearing. These changes often come on gradually and we only notice when it is already a significant barrier to communication. These barriers often lead people to start to withdraw from communication and from social opportunities. Joel Bergsbaken, from the Hearing, Speech & Deaf Center, will be giving a presentation about hearing changes as we age, technology and techniques that improve communication, and support services available to the community to prevent withdrawal and isolation. The Hearing, Speech & Deaf Center (HSDC) is a nonprofit for clients who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have speech-language differences. Their mission is to foster inclusive and accessible communities through communication, advocacy, and education.

Meals On Wheels Delivery Drivers

There are several seniors in our community who are unable to come in for our Congregate Lunch. Thanks to the generous hearts of our Meals on Wheels Delivery Drivers, they are able to have hot meals delivered during the week. They not only deliver nourishing meals, but smiles and friendship as well. To receive Meals on Wheels, an individual must be at least 60

years old, homebound, and unable to prepare meals for themselves due to physical activity, physiological or mental impairment, or a lack of knowledge to prepare nourishing, well-balanced meals. It is with much gratitude that we honor those

who provide this important service each week. Thank You!

Emergency Planning Susy Hymas, Nutrition Assessor

Meals on Wheels and More

Whether we like it or not, winter is approaching in our corner of the Northwest. We never know exactly what winter will bring, but we do know there will be rain, some cold and possibly even snow or wind events. Our corner of the world can also experience earthquakes. If the weather gets bad, you can hopefully stay bundled up in your home. Are you prepared in case the power goes out, or you cannot get out due to snow or ice? Having emergency supplies for weather events or other disasters is always a good idea. What should you have on hand to keep you safe and nourished in case of emergency? Disaster preparedness planners recommend that we have at least three days of emergency supplies. Everyone’s situation is different, but here are some suggestions to help you and your family prepare: Keep enough water on hand for at least 3 days. The recommendation is for one gallon per person per day.

Consider your medications. Talk to your pharmacist about stockpiling an emergency supply of your essential medications. Include some over the counter pain medications in your emergency supplies. Be sure to check expiration dates on all medications.

 Flashlight and some extra batteries.

 Transistor radio and extra batteries.

If you have pets, make sure you have some emergency food and water for them as well.

Other supplies to have on hand include: a whistle, some cash (ATMs may not be working), and an emergency blanket.

Every cupboard should have an emergency food supply for those times when you cannot cook or get out of the house to get supplies. Stock up on foods that you like; rotate and use when they are nearing the expiration date. Here are some suggestions for your emergency food supply. (If you are on a special diet or have food allergies be sure to adjust accordingly.)

Milk or milk alternative in cans or shelf stable boxes Canned fruit and vegetables Tuna and/or canned meats Canned or boxed soups and stews Canned Chili Crackers Peanut butter and nuts Breakfast bars/energy bars Hot and cold cereal Shelf stable juice

In addition to food, your emergency supplies should include a can opener, knife, scissors, paper towels, hand wipes, eating utensils, and paper plates.

It is always a good idea to have an out of area contact that you can call in an emergency to let know that you are safe. Sometimes local lines get busy and it is easier to call out of area folks. With a little preparation you will be ready for a power outage or whatever weather this winter brings.

Have a happy and safe Holiday Season! Any questions? Contact Julie at (360) 733-4030 x1025.
