Greetings members.

As we know more change is on the way.

In a recent article published in the Greypower magazine,

titled “An inclusive digital world” the Govt sets out some

new initiatives aimed at assisting those New Zealanders

who may be “digitally excluded” from access to online

connection, through barriers such as of lack of digital

skills and the price of connecting.

It also discusses online safety and building digital

skills. A Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT

NZ) has been established to help people protect

themselves when online, and get help to recover if

something goes wrong. (87% of financial loss from

scams is suffered by people aged over 55). Experts at

CERT NZ are available online at www.cert.govt.nz and

on the phone at 0800 CERTNZ to help out when

something goes wrong, or seems suspicious.

A Trust has been established called Digital Seniors to

grow tech savvy seniors, and is being piloted in the

Wairarapa ahead of a national roll out. This will include

one-on-one digital learning for seniors.

Their address is www.digitalseniors.co.nz. This pilot

appears to be working with SeniorNet.

The article also talks about the closing of Post Offices

and postal services, driving the need for on line services,

and the Rural Broadband initiative and the Mobile Black

Spot Fund, aimed at improving broadband coverage.

While this very informative article, it was provided by the

Minister for Broadcasting, Communications and Digital

Media, Clare Curran, that role is now being filled by

Megan Woods.

BITE-SIZED DEVICE A NEW TAKE ON

WEARABLE TECH

Imagine a device that feels like and is no bigger than a

piece of chewing gum, which allows you to answer the

phone simply by biting down on it. Photo / Supplied NZ Herald

You’ll likely have heard of ‘wearable gadgets’ – but how about chewable technology?

University of Auckland researchers have been pioneering a device which would allow the user to answer a phone call simply by biting down on it.

ChewIt, developed by the Auckland Bioengineering Institute's Augmented Human Lab team, is a tiny piece of technology encased in a flexible, custom-made printed circuit board.

By being operated from within your mouth, it enables discreet and hands-free interaction with your phone, computer or smartwatch.

It was developed by Associate Professor Suranga Nanayakkara, who made international headlines in recent years with the FingerReader, a prototype device worn on the finger that allows users to point at words, which is then translated to voice.

Internet turns 30:

Inventor urges governments to regulate to stop malicious use

By the early Nineties, the first website had been created and the technology released into the public sphere.

Tim Berners-Lee, who proposed the creation of the internet 30 years ago, says governments must "translate" laws for the digital age to prevent malicious behaviour online.

In a speech today to mark the anniversary of his proposal, Berners-Lee, 63, is warning that tech giants should not be allowed to "pursue short-term profit" at "the expense of human rights and public safety"Tim Berners-Lee, best known as the inventor of the world wide web, today is warning about its misuse. NEW GMAIL FEATURE WILL LET YOU EASILY SCHEDULE

EMAILS

3 Apr, 2019

Users can now schedule emails to send at a particular time within Gmail. Photo / 123RF news.com.au - By: Nick Whigham

Google's e-mail service Gmail has turned 15 and to celebrate the tech giant has introduced a handy new feature. Users can now schedule emails to send at a particular time within Gmail. "Just write your email as you normally would, then schedule it to arrive in your recipient's inbox at a later date and time," Google said in a blog post. Here's how to do it: First you'll need to actually wait for the feature to roll out fully which should happen in the coming days. Google said it started rolling out the feature on Monday but it could take up to a couple weeks to reach everyone. You don't have to install any software upgrades to get new features in G Suite. Instead, features appear in users' accounts automatically. Once you've got the update, when it comes to hitting send on an e-mail, you will notice that you can click on a little arrow on the right side of the blue "Send" button and then hit "Schedule send". In the mobile app, tap the three dots in the top right corner to bring up the menu which allows you to schedule messages. READ MORE: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/technology/news/article.cfm?c_id=5&objectid=12218998 From there, you just choose the date and time you want it to drop into the recipient's inbox.

Would you live in a printed 3D house? 12 Mar 2019 - Debra Bela This 3D printed house has been designed for use in

developing countries. Photo / Supplied Imagine printing a 3D house that can put an at-risk

family in emergency accommodation in as little as 24

hours for just $4000. It’s not science-fiction.

Australian futurist Steve Sammartino is currently designing his own 3D printed smart house in

Melbourne, and says the design could help in natural disaster zones as well as assist with

affordability issues.

“With housing, you can set up a house really quickly, and not even for disaster zones, but even areas

where they’re living in substandard housing, it will make things affordable,” he said.

It is a technology already being explored in other parts of the world.

An American manufacturer is working with the not-for-profit company, New Story, to set up 3D

printed houses in developing countries as part of a humanitarian drive.

Comment: Why 5G will arrive

with a whimper, not a bang 2 Mar, 2019 By: Alex Webb Washington Post

5G looks more like an extension of 4G than the

cataclysm that has been promised. Photo / 123RF

COMMENT:

Not all 5G is created equal. That's the takeaway from this year's Mobile World Congress, the

telecommunications industry's annual confab.

Set aside the furore around Huawei Technologies for now. I want to talk about how the next

generation of mobile connectivity is being rolled out and used.

The irony is that early 5G looks more like an extension of 4G than the cataclysm that has been

promised. The full potential of the technology won't be exploited until it finds its way into smart

factories and power grids.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12208798

The first networks will arrive this year. At the show in Barcelona, Sprint Corp joined rivals AT&T,

Verizon Communications and T-Mobile US in outlining plans to roll out 5G in nine US cities in the

first half. Firms in South Korea and Japan have similar ambitions, and trials are underway in

Europe.
