social, and financial toll. All too often people who provide care to others neglect their own need for self-care. Taking care of oneself is essential if the best care is to be provided to another person. Caregivers must constantly modify & learn how to balance their own needs with the needs of someone who needs care. There is no single recipe for ensuring that one remains a healthy caregiver but the following basic ingredients appear central when creating a practice of “good health”: Educate Yourself About The Disease Or

Medical Condition

Whether you care for someone with heart disease, stroke or dementia or whether care takes place in your own home or at a distance, many of the daily challenges are similar.

• Learn new information and skills and learn how to adapt to the challenges you encounter.

• Get up-to-date and accurate information through books, fact sheets and brochures regarding your relative’s condition.

• Contact the appropriate disease-related organization or medical provider that can guide you to other resources such as hospital-based education programs and support groups.

Find a Doctor Or Another Health

Professional Who Understands The Disease

Armed with some knowledge, you are capable of asking the right questions of the patient’s doctor.

• Make a short list of questions and assert that you need such questions answered before you leave.

• Good doctors understand the impact of caregiving on you and should be willing to involve you in healthcare decisions that affect both your relative and you.

Consult With Other Experts

You may need additional professional help to plan for the future. For instance: • You may need legal authority to make healthcare and financial decisions on behalf of your relative.

• A certified financial planner may help you prepare for the possibility of expensive care for your relative in an assisted living facility or other chronic-care facility.

• Getting experts involved as soon as possible may save you a lot of worry later.

• If you are too busy to attend to this matter, make sure someone acts in your behalf to handle it and get crucial matters taken care & accomplished.

• The Guernsey County Senior Citizens Center offers legal assistance (up to $250 of a non-criminal nature), which can help you create or re-write a will; help with advance

directives; establish your preferred Power

of Attorney, and other health related legal matters.

Other family members and friends can play key roles in helping you to share in the care. • Organize a family meeting so that everyone can get on the same page and find out what each person may or may not be able to offer or is/is not willing to do.

• All potential sources of help need to be involved & informed about the specific tasks at hand for both you and the relative in need of care.

• Make a care plan and written outline of all assigned responsibilities and tasks with the family and then meet again a month later to evaluate progress.

Take Time For Relaxation And Exercise

Let’s face it - helping another person can be hard work. Set aside time every day from the work of caregiving or you risk losing yourself to the exclusive needs of another person.

Page 3: Senior Times Newsletter - WordPress.comMar 02, 2014  · 1022 Carlisle Ave, Cambridge, Ohio 43725 Tel: 740-439-6681 Fax: 740-439-7478 Toll Free: 1-866-534-2349 E-mail: gcscc@guernesysenior.org

March 2014 Page 3

Diversions are necessary in order to be renewed. Enjoy a hobby, see a movie, take a walk, ride a bike, or take part in any number of leisure time activities. The Senior Center can be a great resource of relaxation & escape as well as provide you with a host of exercise, wellness, and support. You deserve a sense of normalcy. Something enjoyable should be built into every day, if even for just ten minutes, that reminds you that your needs are important, too. Take care of yourself in ways that are meaningful to you.

Use Community Resources

Unfortunately, most caregivers delay looking for help outside their social network until they are virtually exhausted. Contact the Guernsey County Senior Citizens Center for additional services, help, & guidance by calling (740) 439-6681;

Toll-Free: 1-866-534-2349; emailing us at :

[email protected].; or stopping by and

visiting our friendly staff located at 1022 Carlisle Avenue, Cambridge, Ohio. Other local agencies target the needs of younger disabled people and their families. Such agencies can help you get a well-deserved break by paying for occasional in-home services by someone to relieve you or providing adult day services for your relative.

Maintain Your Sense Of Humor There is nothing funny about a chronic illness, but being able to see humor in difficult situations can bring about much needed relief. • Taking a lighthearted view can alter the

meaning of a situation that might otherwise appear overwhelmingly depressing.

• Jokes, comics and funny movies can fill the void if you cannot find something funny on your own.

Explore Religious Beliefs

And Spiritual Values Caring for someone with a chronic illness often evokes questions about faith, hope, God and the meaning of life. • Organized religion may offer a fresh

perspective, but spirituality runs deeper than any particular tenet or belief system.

• Individual and group prayer, rituals, meditation, inspirational reading and spiritual direction may shed light on matters of the soul.

• Attend a Bible Study Group held at the Senior Center or your local church.

• Invite your pastor or clergy to visit you at your home to offer you additional spiritual guidance and moral support. This is also a good time for pastors to minister and pray for the ailing and ill loved one as well.

Set Realistic Goals Accustomed to doing things in a hurry, you may be surprised to find out how little you can accomplish when you are responsible for another person. • Be patient. • Set small goals for yourself each day or

week and build upon your successes instead of thinking about your failings.

• Don’t be afraid or reluctant to “Ask for assistance or help”.

• Learn to appreciate that you are making progress in ensuring that both you and your loved one are getting the best possible care.

• Finally, celebrate your achievements. Spring will soon arrive and we want nothing more than each and every senior to be happy and healthy. It is important to us that every senior feels well, embraces all that life has to offer, and achieves a sense of fulfillment and enjoyment in all aspects of their life. Here at the Senior Center we’ve planned special events and activities throughout the

Guernsey County Senior Citizens Center will be holding a March for Meals Campaign. Support will help us continue feeding senior citizens & disabled individuals in our community

Coming to Cambridge, Ohio-March 2014 the Guernsey County Senior Citizens Center Meals On Wheels program announces that it will be participating in the national 2014 March For Meals campaign. Guernsey County Senior Citizens Center Meals On Wheels event will include Mayors for Meals, corporate canned food drive, Meet & Greet at Denny’s Restaurant, a coin collection at Riesbeck Food Market, and much more.

“This winter has been financially challenging for most everyone”. “During these tough economic times, the nutritious meals, food and human contact we provide to seniors in our community is needed more than ever,” said Shon Gress, Executive Director of the Guernsey County Senior Citizens Center. We need the community to please come out and support our March For Meals events. Guernsey County senior citizens & disabled residents are counting on us.

March For Meals is a national campaign during the month of March, initiated and sponsored by the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA), to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of local communities. Senior nutrition programs across the United States, like Guernsey County Senior Citizens Center’s Meals On Wheels program, promote March For Meals in their local communities through public events, partnerships with local businesses, and fundraising initiatives. March For Meals is a time when communities can come together to stand with their local Meals On Wheels and support the mission to end senior hunger in America by 2020.

“Please Assist Us in Continuing Our Mission of Serving Guernsey County Senior Citizens”

Your Tax Deductible Donations Help Provide Senior Citizens with Services

The Guernsey County Senior Citizens Center, Inc. is a registered 501 c 3 non-profit

multi-senior services county-wide provider that is funded in part by the Ohio Department of Aging

through The Area Agency on Aging-Region 9. Additional funding sources include a Senior Services

Tax Levy, United Way of Guernsey County, as well as donations and contributions that are made by

our countywide supporters. No one-single funding source supplies 100% of the funding that is

required to sustain the many programs and services that GCSCC provides. All funds are obtained on

a reimbursable basis and are received by GCSCC only after services have been provided to eligible

senior citizens living throughout Guernsey County.

For 41 years we have steadfastly continued our mission of serving older adults in Guernsey

County. Due to the growing need for senior based services and programs the Guernsey County

Senior Citizens Center, Inc. depends a great deal upon the kindness and generosity of others in

helping us to fulfill our mission and goals. Your donations greatly assist us in our mission of

serving senior citizens as well as help us to serve a growing and increasing aging adult

population. Quality services including, but not limited to; home delivered meals, transportation, and

homemaking, are each provided on a “Donation Only” basis, whereby seniors will not be denied

services based on their ability or inability to make a donation. Suggested Cost Sharing fees are

recommended for some programs. Rising gasoline prices, increasing food costs, and other expenses

require us to share this reminder about how crucial your donations are and how they go directly

toward GCSCC achieving and fulfilling our mission of serving senior citizens.

Please remember the mission of the Guernsey County Senior Citizens Center in all of

your giving this holiday season. Also, please remember GCSCC when structuring your Will;

listing beneficiaries; and when making in-memoriam contributions are appropriate. We sincerely

appreciate your kindness and support…and most importantly we know that the seniors that we serve

appreciate your support too! Please help us secure the future of senior based services so that they

are readily accessible and available for you or when someone in your own family or circle of

friends might need them.
