Dear Seniors,
Happy Easter! Spring is
often a welcomed season for
many people, especially after a
long harsh winter. Fortunately for
those of us who live in

Coronavirus has come to Ohio
and sadly has impacted us all.
Guernsey County Senior

about what a significant outbreak
of the Coronavirus disease 2019
(COVID-19) in Guernsey County
could mean for the vulnerable
senior citizens we serve. We are
closely monitoring information
and resources being shared by the
experts in disease control and are
putting prevention and response

anticipate a disruption to in-home services at
this time, we will be implementing new safety
precautions for both our staff and our clients.
All congregate dining sites and Senior
Center sponsored activities at the Senior
Center are canceled until further notice.
Home delivered meals, transportation, and
homemaking services will still be provided
and available. “Grab & Go” lunches will be
available for congregate clients for pick-up
and to take home to eat from our main
facility (1022 Carlisle Avenue, Cambridge)
and satellite sites until Congregate dining
re-opens to the public.
Our senior clients and our employees
remain our utmost concern. It is our hope
healthcare professionals will find a way to end
this epidemic, but in the meantime, we will do
our best to keep everyone informed and not
cause unnecessary alarm. We want seniors to
be healthy and safe so we are doing our part to
comply with Governor DeWine’s public safety
orders and initiatives.
As with many illnesses, we know that
older adults face higher risks of contracting
COVID-19 and/or experiencing complications,
particularly if they have underlying health
conditions. We also know that the our
congregate, home-delivered meals, homemak-
ing, social & recreational activities, and
transportation services – serves as an
invaluable lifeline to Guernsey County’s most
vulnerable older adults, the majority of whom
have multiple chronic conditions and take three
or more medications daily. At a time when
seniors are struggling with hunger and one in
four lives alone, we cannot allow the threat of
COVID-19 to prevent seniors from accessing
critical senior-based services, further
increasing hunger or isolation among this
at-risk population.
We pledge to keep the public informed.
Should there be a local diagnosis of COVID-
19 within Guernsey County we will dutifully
notify the public if we will have to take further
measures to curtail or modify our services,
programs, or activities. In the mean time, here
are some helpful hints to help keep you
healthy:
Ways to prevent Infectious Diseases
Wash your hands frequently with soap
and water at least twenty seconds. Dry
hands with a clean towel or air dry.
Use alcohol based hand sanitizer when
soap and water is unavailable.
Cover your mouth with a tissue or your
sleeve when coughing or sneezing.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or
mouth with unwashed hands.
Early data suggest older people are
twice as likely to have serious COVID-19
illness. This may be because immune systems
change with age, making it harder to fight off
diseases and infection. Older adults also are
more likely to have underlying health
conditions that make it harder to cope with and
recover from illness. In addition, people of all
ages, with or without disabilities, seem to be at
higher risk for getting very sick from COVID-
19 if they have serious chronic medical
conditions like heart, lung or kidney disease.
Reducing exposure is especially important for
people at higher risk of complications!
If you are at higher risk, CDC recommends
that you:
Clean and wash your hands often.
Clean and disinfect your home: practice
routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces
(for example: tables, doorknobs, light switches,
handles, desks, toilets, faucets, sinks, cell
phones, electronic devices, etc…)
Stock up on supplies.
Have medical and other supplies readily
available and on hand.
Make sure you have access to
several weeks of medications and
supplies in case you need to stay
home for prolonged periods of
time.
Contact your healthcare provider
to ask about obtaining extra
necessary medications to have on
hand in case there is an outbreak
of COVID-19 in your community
and you need to stay home for a
prolonged period of time.
If you cannot get extra
medications, consider using
mail-order for medications.
Be sure to have over-the-counter
medicines and medical supplies
(tissues, etc.) to treat fever and
other symptoms. Most people will
be able to recover from COVID-
19 at home.
Stay at home as much as possible if COVID
-19 is spreading in your community.
When you go out in public, keep away from
others who are sick, limit close contact and
wash your hands often.
Avoid crowds, large gatherings, especially
in poorly ventilated spaces.
Avoid cruise travel and non-essential air
travel. Stay up to date on CDC Travel Health
Notices.
Plan now for what you will do if you, or
people you rely on for support, become ill.
We continue to formulate contingency
plans for our services, especially if our office
or partner locations must close. We will
continue to do whatever needs to be done to
protect our vulnerable seniors and make sure
that we can still provide nutrition,
homemaking, transportation, and the other
many senior-based services senior citizens
need every day. Please know that my staff
and I are deeply committed to promoting
good, safe, health protocols while also
preventing social isolation for the seniors we
serve and we will continue to update you on
our preparedness plans. As of the time this
newsletter went to print we are still planning to
go forward with our Older Americans Month
festivities and celebrations in May. We will
keep you updated and informed should we be
required to change or postpone our plans. If
you have any questions or want more specific
details, please feel free to contact the Guernsey
County Senior Citizens Center, by calling at
(740) 439-6681.
I wish you a very happy and blessed
Easter Holiday. Stay well. God Bless. And
please keep washing your hands!
Have a Happy Easter Sincerely,

The Violet
Down in a green and shady bed,
A modest violet grew; Its stalk was bent, it hung its
head as if to hide from view. And yet it was a
lovely flower, its color bright and fair; It might
have graced a rosy bower, Instead of hiding there.
Yet thus it was content to bloom, In modest tints
arrayed; and there diffused a sweet perfume,
Within the silent shade. Then let me to the valley
go, This pretty flower to see; That I may also learn
to grow In Sweet humility.

CENSUS 101: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW The 2020 Census is closer than you think!
Here’s a quick refresher of what it is and why it’s essential that everyone is counted.
Everyone counts. The census counts every person living in the United States once, only once,
and in the right place.
It’s about fair representation. Every 10 years the results of the census are used to reapportion
the House of Representatives, determining how many seats each state gets.
It’s in the Constitution. The U.S. Constitution mandates that everyone in the country be
counted every 10 years. The first census was in 1790.
It’s about $675 billion. The distribution of more than $675 billion in federal funds, grants, and
support to states, counties, and communities are based on census data. That money is spent on
schools, hospitals, roads, public works, and other vital programs.
It’s about redistricting. After each decade’s census, state officials redraw the boundaries of the
congressional and state legislative districts in their states to account for population shifts.
Taking part is your civic duty. Completing the census is mandatory: it’s a way to participate in
our democracy and say “I COUNT!”
Census data are being used all around you. Residents use the census to support community
initiatives involving legislation, quality-of-life, and consumer advocacy. Businesses use census
data to decide where to build factories, offices, and stores, which create jobs. Local governments
use the census for public safety and emergency preparedness. Real estate developers use the
census to build new homes and revitalize old neighborhoods.
Your privacy is protected. It’s against the law for the Census Bureau to publicly release your
responses in any way that could identify you or your household. By law, your responses cannot
be used against you and can only be used to produce statistics.
2020 will be easier than ever. In 2020, you will be able to respond to the census online.
You can help. You are the expert –we need your ideas on the best way to make sure everyone in
your community gets counted.
Where can I go to learn more? You can learn more about the 2020 Census by visiting
2020census.gov.

Energy Assistance Available to Reconnect/
Avoid Disconnection of Utilities Ohio’s electric and natural gas customers have the
opportunity to use the Winter Reconnect Order
(WRO) during the winter heating season from
October 15th through April 15th to reconnect or to
avoid disconnection of their utilities. The WRO
applies only to Ohio’s investor-owned electric and
natural gas utilities and does not apply to municipally
-owned utilities or rural electric co-ops. To apply,
contact your utility company.
The order allows any electric or natural gas
customer of an investor-owned utility to avoid
disconnection or to reconnect their service for $175,
even if the customer owes more and cannot afford to
pay the entire balance.
It is always recommended to speak with a
representative of the utility company or your local
community action agency before using the WRO.
Contact your local community action agency,
located at 185 S 2nd St, Byesville, by calling (740)
685-2422 or (740) 685-2423 for additional
information. If you would like someone to assist you
in talking to your utility company, you can call the
Public Utilities Commission (PUCO) by calling
1-800-686-7826.
Dollar Energy Fund & Neighbor To
Neighbor Program Assistance Dollar Energy Fund and AEP Ohio have teamed
up to create a program that will assist low-income
AEP Ohio customers who have difficulty paying their
electric bill. The program will provide eligible
customers with a utility assistance grant applied
directly to the AEP Ohio bill. This grant will help
low-income customers maintain or restore their basic
electric service.
Eligible Households
1. Must be a customer of AEP
2. Be at or below 200% of the Poverty Income
Guidelines (FPIGs), a family of four earning up to
$48,499.92 per year is eligible.
3. Have made a sincere effort of payment on their
AEP bill. A sincere effort is a minimum of
$75 in the last 90 days. Exceptions for senior
citizens will apply.
4. Have a minimum balance of $100 on their AEP
bill.
For a Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program referral,
contact: Area Agency on Aging, Region 9 at (740)
439-2294 or 1-800-945-4250.
