program notes

Odessa | Matthew Lorick

Matthew Lorick is a rising composer, audio engineer and percussionist. Lorick began his musical studies with choral and piano studies, but quickly developed a passion for percussion. Lorick has studied extensively and explores specific elements and cultures to implement a new style to the percussive world. He uses his original music as soundscapes and hopes to expand the overall percussive library with a new and fresh sound.

Odessa is an energetic, vibrant marimba solo written in a manner that fits extremely well in the hands. His harmonic language is widely appealing, using repetitive physical motions across the keyboard to his advantage.

Blue Motion | Stephen Whibley

Stephen Whibley is a percussionist and composer from Manchester, England. Now based in London, he holds the position of Principal Percussion (No. 2) in the BBC Concert Orchestra. Before joining the BBC Concert Orchestra, Stephen was based in the north-west of England from where his orchestral playing with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and Northern Sinfonia and his ensemble and solo playing with renowned musicians such as BackBeat Percussion Quartet, Evelyn Glennie, Ney Rosauro, and Eric Sammut took him around the world.

Blue Motion is an exciting new piece for percussion duo. It premiered in the United Kingdom in summer of 2006 by the exciting new percussion duo Maraca2 from Birmingham, UK. The 9-minute work has a great feel of drive and momentum with pulse remaining constant from start to finish. With great contrast between the soft spacious sections and the impelling rhythmic grooves, the piece demands coordination between hands and feet and energetic communication between the two performers. Blue Motion is a challenging performance piece of virtuosity, vivacity, virility, vibrancy, vitality, and versatility.

Eight Pieces for Four Timpani | Elliott CarterVIII. March

Elliott Carter is internationally recognized as one of the most influential American voices in classical music, and a leading figure of modernism in the 20th and 21st centuries. He was hailed as “America’s great musical poet” by Andrew Porter and noted as “one of America’s most distinguished creative artists in any field” by his friend Aaron Copland. Carter’s prolific career spanned over 75 years, with more than 150 pieces, ranging from chamber music to orchestral works to opera, often marked with a sense of wit and humor. He received numerous honors and accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize on two occasions.

Eight Pieces for Four Timpani is a collection of short pieces for solo timpani – four drums played by one musician. Six of the pieces were composed in 1950. Two new pieces were added in 1966, and the rest were revised in collaboration with percussionist Jan Williams. Carter wrote the pieces as studies in tempo modulation and the use of four-note chords. The pieces make heavy use of extended techniques, including playing with the back end of the timpani sticks, varying the beating spot on the drumhead, glissandos, and sympathetic vibration.

March is a contrapuntal piece: one march rhythm is played with the head of one mallet, while another is played at a different speed with the back of the other mallet.

Vertical River | Blake TysonDuet for Vibe and Marimba

Blake Tyson is a percussionist, teacher, and composer. Tyson is a concert artist and clinician for the Zildjian Company and Malletech. Since 2001 he has been a member of the faculty of the University of Central Arkansas. He received the DMA degree from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. While there he was also awarded the prestigious Performer's Certificate. He holds a MM from Kent State University, and a BM from the University of Alabama.

"I wrote this piece on a commission from John Parks. The piece is a reflection of the great times that John and I had rafting down the Boise River and is inspired by the great friendship that John and I share.” – Blake Tyson

biography

Chatterbox | Chad Floyd

Chad currently serves as Associate Professor of Percussion at Campbellsville University where he instructs applied percussion and directs the percussion ensemble, steel band, and drumline. He also serves as Director of Steel Appeal, a steel drum academy based in Campbellsville, Kentucky, comprised of over 100 students from the surrounding area. In addition, Chad also serves as Vice President for the Kentucky Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society and as a member of the PAS Education Committee.

Chad holds degrees from the University of Kentucky (DMA), Belmont University (MM), Eastern Kentucky University (MAED), and Campbellsville University (BME). He has studied primarily under James Campbell, David A. Johnson, and Todd London. Chad Floyd is proud to be an artist endorser/clinician for Grover Pro Percussion Inc., Innovative Percussion Inc., Pearl Drums and Adams Musical Instruments, and Remo Inc.

Chatterbox is aptly named and does a lot with a little. Utilizing a cajon, a set of bongos, and a set of congas, this medium-advanced solo is packed with a ton of musical interest. Just as the listener settles in with one tasty groove, an accent here or a melodic phrase there spins it off in an entirely different direction. Effectively and delightfully, this solo walks the line between what audiences expect from a concert solo and what they expect from a hand drum performance.

Selena Sanchez is a versatile percussionist that performs numerous concerts and performances throughout the year ranging from symphony

orchestras, wind ensembles, percussion ensembles, pit percussions, and solo recitals. Selena is also an active educator, having worked with numerous middle and high schools throughout Cobb County, where she serves as a percussion clinician/instructor.

Selena’s professional affiliations include the Collegiate division of the National Association for Music Education (CNAfME), the Percussive Arts Society (PAS), and Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Service Sorority.

Selena would like to thank her family and friends for their love and support!
