President's MessageHi Everyone,
Summer is finally here now, and hopefully, we get some great hot weather to match the cold winter.
Your Executive is looking to plan an outing in September or October likely a boat cruise with lunch. Anyone who would like to do something differently is always welcome to put forward their suggestions. Speak up or use our Suggestion Box. Any suggestions would be looked at and welcomed by your Executive.
Also it would be nice to get some things going in the morning, whether it is exercise or maybe learning to knit. The mornings are available at the clubhouse for members to use.
Our new Website should be up and running soon at www.campbellfordseniors.ca
We have been fortunate to raise our membership up this year and always looking for new members.
Our soup and sandwich the first Wednesday of every month is doing well and increasing almost every month. Everyone is welcomed and you do not have to be a senior to come and enjoy the lunch. Soup, sandwich, dessert and coffee/tea for only $7.00 is a GREAT DEAL!

1. Learn Your Cavity-Nesting Birds
Not all bird species prefer the comfort of enclosed shelter for brooding their eggs or raising their young. First, be aware of your most common backyard bird species and note which ones regularly visit your yard, and you can begin to cater your bird houses to suit those species that are already familiar with and comfortable in your yard. Chickadees, tits, nuthatches, wrens and bluebirds are some of the most common
bird house residents. They will be the ones most eager to investigate any houses you add to your yard, and they will be the first to take up residence if your bird houses meet their cavity nesting needs.
2. Buy Or Build Appropriate Bird Houses
While birds aren’t always discriminating about the size or style of the houses they choose for nesting, you will have better success attracting birds to your houses if you opt for styles

that meet preferences for size and space. Entrance hold sizes are especially critical, because a properly sized entrance will help ensure that only the intended birds can use each specific house and that larger birds are excluded, keeping the nesting birds safe. If you are handy, you can build a house yourself or assemble one from a bird house kit,
otherwise there are many bird houses available for purchase form garden centers, bird stores or online retailers.
3. Mount Houses In The Best Spots

broods, but you also want to be sure you have a decent view of the house so you can monitor the growing family and enjoy their company. If you plan to add more than one bird house to your yard, place the houses as far apart as possible to increase your chances of attracting more than one interested pair of birds at a time, but don’t be discouraged if some houses remain empty even if they are in ideal locations.
4. Provide Nesting Material
Make your bird houses even more enticing to birds looking for a place to call home by providing
appropriate nesting materials. Attract birds with nesting materials by providing different types, from grasses, twigs and weeds to pine needles, mu, pebbles and string. The easier it can be for birds to build a nest, the more likely they will be to investigate available nesting sites nearby, including your bird houses. As an added bonus, the materials you provide may also encourage birds that nest in trees or shrubs - without bird houses - to also build their nests in your yard.
5. Keep Bird Houses Safe And Clean
Birds will not use a nesting site that is not safe for either

their hatchlings or themselves. With regular care, it is easy to clean bird houses and maintain them in good condition for the local climate and weather, making them more attractive to backyard birds and ensuring healthy bird families with chicks that have a better opportunity to survive. A well-maintained bird house may even be home to more than one bird family in the same nesting season, but if the house is dirty or broken, few birds will give it a second glance. Even the most attractive, most appealing bird houses will not always
be home to a new family of birds in each breeding season, but a patient birder who takes good care of bird houses is more likely to become a bird landlord year after year. Keep the entire yard bird-friendly with adequate food, additional shelter, a source of fresh water and safety from feral cats and other predators, and birds are more likely to start calling your bird houses home.

Feeling good! Being free of pain! Welcoming each new day in a state of enthusiastic appreciation! Must we give up on experiencing life as sparkling and joyful just because we have lived through many decades?
We don’t have to. It’s never too late to empower ourselves… and yes, of course, it’s easy to say.
But how and where do we begin (especially if we are dealing with pain and loss and trauma)?
My suggestion is to begin with a wish… a wish for connecting to nothing less than our own inner, authentic selves.
That inner spark is the starting point of connections so vast and all-encompassing that the ‘world wide web’ becomes tiny and insignificant by comparison. We can connect to our healthy, joyful selves regardless of age, regardless of
conditions that make us believe it is not possible.STEP ONE: Our own breathSTEP TWO: Quiet, gentle movementSTEP THREE: Quiet, gentle stillnessSTEP FOUR: Learning to be aware and conscious of all of the above
Yoga was created over a thousand years ago in order to help the human body be capable of stillness without pain. Many people hold the misconception that one must be incredibly

flexible and strong to do Yoga. It is unfortunate that most Yoga book-covers show extremely advanced Yogis in positions that are simply not possible for most people.
Meditation is the key to accessing the core self and like all worthwhile skills must be learned and practiced. Yoga is helpful but not essential to becoming an adept meditator.
There are also many helpful modalities which can assist the body and mind to relax and promote the healing of both physical and emotional wounds.
There is the ancient Hawaiian ‘hands-on’ healing art of LomiLomi which must be experienced since
words cannot do it justice. There is Shiatsu which uses finger pressure on specific body points to promote wellness. There is Reiki , which translated from the Japanese means ‘Universal Divine Energy’, and is practised with a light placing of hands which feels lovely even to those who are experiencing painful conditions.
No matter your age, make a wish for wellness and come see what your community has to offer!Heli Bucek Evolution Yoga and Wellness, Campbellford

The philosophical framework ‘Zest for Life’ guides service delivery in all areas at Island Park. This philosophy speaks to honoring residents’ choices and providing opportunities to age successfully by focusing on wellness and optimum health for each individual.
Located along the Trent River the home was built nine years ago with the wellbeing of its residents in mind.
“One of the things I find very appealing about the building is the location, nestled in the heart of Campbellford in the Trent Hills and looking out to the canal,” said General Manager Jane Crane, “We also have the Rotary walking trail for everyone’s enjoyment,” she added.
And that is just the outside environment. Inside there’s always plenty to enjoy and do.
“We work alongside our community partners to support seniors in the area
and often host events that are open to the community to give back,” said Jane. As part of a community stakeholder group, Island Park spearheaded on the development of a Wellness Road map for seniors living in the Trent Hills area. This publication has just had its second printing and continues to be valuable resource guide.
The Age Well Network, which meets at the home regularly, recently held its Age Well Fair and the public was invited to meet the organizations and individuals who set up their displays to provide information on the services they offer.
“It’s a pleasure for us to be in this community. We enjoy all the residents who live here and everyone who comes to visit.”
From monthly birthday parties, to anniversary celebrations, to the annual

corn roast and more there’s always something for everyone to enjoy.
“This year we will be hosting “Cook for the Cure,” so stay tuned,” said Jane with her big smile.
Local restaurants will be involved and the public will be invited to “sample the
food” at the competition. All proceeds will go to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
Island Park Retirement Community offers all the amenities, with individual apartments that vary in size from studio to one bedroom

to one bedroom with a sitting room.
“We also offer short-term and respite stays for seniors who need a break or additional support following surgery or a health crisis,” said Jane.
As well, 24-hour nursing support is provided.
The four-level building has 85 suites and 40 expertly trained staff to meet residents’ needs.
All the cooking is done in the main kitchen as the home offers three nutritious delicious meals daily.
“We modify our meals to suit the needs of the residents,” Jane noted.

The home also offers weekly housekeeping and linen changes.
Additional supportive “Lifestyle Plus” services such as bathing, personal laundry, and keeping track of medications and doctor appointments are offered to meet changing health care needs.
The home also has an emergency response system making the residents’ safety a priority.
“But what I really want people to know is that we are part of this community and we are giving residents the opportunity to stay in the community,” said Crane.
Island Park Retirement Community is owned by Leisureworld Senior Care Corporation. .
