On our Christian Walk By Rev Luke Thurai

Recently, I had the blessing of a 10-day tour of Israel. It was a biblical and historical tour of the sites mentioned in the Bible, places such as Jerusalem, the city of David, Mount Carmel, etc. Many of the sites contained ruins and provided only a glimpse of the glory of the former place that had existed. A synagogue that was built over the synagogue where Jesus had cast out a demon (Luke 4:35) was in ruins. One awesome experience was to walk the tunnels of the Temple Mount and observe where the remaining retaining Western Wall extended below ground for probably 50 meters before it joined the bedrock. Each stone in the wall had a width of at least 3 to 4 meters. There was one stone that was at least 12 meters long and 3 meters high. That piece alone would have weighed at least 400 tons. It must have been an engineering feat to raise such a magnificent structure considering that the only technology available was a pulley system fueled by raw human muscle-power. In Jesus’ time, it must have been a breath-taking sight to look across from the Mount of Olives to the Temple. Yet, Jesus prophesied “not one stone here will be left on another; everyone will be thrown down” (Matt 24:2). That came true when Titus of Rome invaded Jerusalem in AD 70. For all that glory and magnificence during Jesus’ day, all that was left was a pale shadow. The huge temple stones that the Roman soldiers threw down still remain as a testament to the defiled and ruined Temple.

From biblical history, we can see that the Israelite kingdoms declined and fell by first decaying internally because they wandered away from God. God’s judgment for this was to make them weak and susceptible to foreign invasion and conquest. The same truth applies to our Christian life. No one ever falls from grace overnight. The early signs are probably things like being too busy to read the Bible or Christian literature, not praying, etc. In our busyness, we forget the many blessings of God. We also begin to move away from regular fellowship with our church friends citing family commitments, etc. Too soon, we lose interest even in Sunday worship as our sense of the majesty and awesomeness of God diminishes and worship becomes mundane. We find excuses to be absent lengthily from church. I have seen even worse cases with the believer falling into sin and not being able to find the way out of his mess.

Our muscles are an allegory of our Christian faith. They need to be exercised to be kept in shape. Years ago, I used to run regularly throughout the week. But then after many deskbound years of inactivity, I found it hard to start up again. More than a year ago, after my discharge from hospital, I tried to heed my cardiologist in exercising regularly by walking, but found it hard going initially. The leg muscles hurt at being subjected to the strain, even after a short distance. As with our muscles, so it is with our Christian faith. When crisis looms, we will find it hard to trust in God’s love if we have not exercised that trust through regular reading of his Word and obedience to the commands therein. When we face adversity, we will find it hard to experience his healing and comfort if we have not been faithfully communing with him in prayer. We will find it hard to even share our problems with our church friends, if we have not been communing with them in a shared spiritual life in our small groups, etc.

So let us intentionally learn to put God first daily. The fruit will be seen in the times when we face challenges of life and those will be the times that we need him most.
