On National Signing Day, athletes all around the country take a step closer to launching their sports careers into a profession. This year 11 SHHS student athletes took that step and officially accepted offers to play sports for various colleges Wednesday, Feb. 3. “I’ve always dreamed of signing to a college one day ever since I started playing football,” senior Eric Ward said. “It makes me really happy to see that I’ve made my family proud. They’ve come up here to show all their support.” For some SHHS athletes being accepted into college means a better life and a gateway to more opportunities not only for
them, but also for their families. Others saw Signing Day as a reward for all their hard work and support from their families the last four years. “Today means a lot for me and my family. My mom has always wanted me to go to college and I have to so it’s a big day,” senior Kabien Barron said. “I committed to Tyler Jr. College. It’s a nice school. I think it’s the best school for me to continue to be a successful young man.” This opportunity not only helps these Texans with their sports careers, it also gives them the chance to better their education. Most of the signed athletes plan to study business and sports management, while others choose to study biotechnology, computer science, and engineering. “I plan to study business and minor in international business and entrepreneurship
because my family has a barbecue business and I plan on taking over the business one day and helping them out,” senior Reginald Stubblefield said. These athletes also hope to grow as individuals. Gaining an education as well as knowledge and wisdom is something they hope to do to better their lives for themselves and for their future families. “By being all the way in Illinois I hope to grow into who I’m becoming as a man and as a person.” senior Noah Newhouse said. “Obviously gain a great education that will be able to provide for my family in the future and hopefully getting to play a little football while I’m there.”

TCU SCHOLARS EMBRACE OPPORTUNITY
By Vyveca WileyEditor-in-Chief
Many tears were shed in the Little Theater from students and staff as five seniors were awarded the Texas Christian University (TCU) Community Scholars scholarship March 22. David Aguwa, Sonia Graciano, Elizabeth Hennington, Brittany Horn, and Cameron Law were granted $250,000 each to cover four years of undergraduate studies at TCU. A total of $1.25 million in scholarship money. “I want to congratulate the students who got this prestigious award. It’s an opportuni-ty for them to change their entire life. Thank you to the community scholars for providing this great opportunity,” superintendent Mar-celo Cavazos said. “We know that education
is the key to everyone’s success. This is a unique opportunity. I’m very proud of all the students who have earned this great scholar-ship.”As the students entered the theater they were greeted with clapping and loud cheers from their peers and teachers and the tears began to flow. One student scholar was especially emo-tional as she walked into the theater bawling.Hennington’s face was full of exhilaration as she walked to the front of the theater to accept her award. “This scholarship means the world. I don’t have to pay for college and I get to go to the college of my dreams. I’m going to be close to home,” Hennington said. “It’s amazing. There are no words to accurately describe how I’m feeling right now.”Hennington said she always wanted to attend
TCU. The idea of a full ride scholarship to the “school of her dreams” was unreal. She felt it couldn’t hurt to apply for the scholarship. She worked on her essays for weeks receiving constant revisions from her teachers. The process was so straining and far out that when it became time for the interviews, almost a month ago, it became more real. During the waiting period she applied for other scholarships, but she was nervous about getting this one because there were hundreds of people who applied. “I remember when they first told us about the scholarship they brought in the top 15 percent into the Little Theater. I was like wow this is amazing,” Hennington said. “I’ve been dreaming of TCU for forever. A lot of people have. It’s a great school so I just took a chance.”
TCU SCHOLARS EMBRACE OPPORTUNITY
Right before students were told they earned the scholarship, they were brought into the school social worker’s office. They were told that if they didn’t receive the scholarship that it shouldn’t discourage them from anything. Some students cried thinking they didn’t receive the scholarship. “They said things happen for better or worse. They weren’t saying no or yes, but it sounded like a no to us. They made it seem as if we didn’t get it. They played us pretty good. We’re just really glad it didn’t turn out that way in the end,” Law said. “Right now, I’m just feeling relieved.” The students went through a nine-part ap-plication process for the scholarship, which included completing the TCU Freshman Application and essay, the TCU Community Scholars application and essay, an activities
resume, official SAT or ACT scores, and teacher and counselor evaluations. Teachers like Mercedes Bolsterli and Keith Gray helped students like Aguwa. Friends helped motivate and push him forward throughout the process. The College & Career Center and Counsel-ing Office helped Graciano and Law as they applied. “Forever. It seemed like we waited forever to find out if we’d won or not,” Hennington said. “We were sort of stalking Mrs. Carter, like, is she wearing purple? What is she wearing today?” Each of these students have different push factors that made them apply for the scholar-ship. Graciano had a huge personal push. She dreams of a better life and future. Not only is she the first to go to college in her family,
but she is the first to graduate from high school. “I knew that this was a great opportunity and I wanted to do it big being the first to achieve higher education in my family. What’s bigger than TCU?” Graciano said. “I didn’t fill out any other scholarships while waiting. I was trying to be confident and put all my eggs in one basket.” Though the students have until May 1 to commit TCU most signed that day.David Aguwa plans to major in Computer Engineering, Sonia Graciano plans to major in Psychology, Elizabeth Hennington plans to major in Biology, Brittany Horn plans to major in Pre-Med, Cameron Law plans to major in Economics.

WORDS OF WISDOM
“Stay focused on yourself and don’t worry about what others think be-cause at the end
of the day you are the one supporting
yourself.”
- Jasmine Mata
“DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT SLACK ON
SCHOOL WORK! Always keep a straight head never let no one tell you that
you can’t do it because if you believe you can succeed
(corny I know right), but seriously guys this is like the best thing I could leave you
with because I believe in you, you can do it. Anything is possible with a mindset.”
- Jacqueline Cunningham
“Make sure you have fun in high school. It’s too
short to waste and it goes by fast. A
lot of times I think “I wish I would’ve
done this, or do that.”
- Marcus Jones
“Enjoy and make the best of high school. Don’t be that
kid who doesn’t participate in school activities. Party, party, party, but still keep up with
your school work. Don’t procrastinate.”
- Javier Posadas
“High school is going to be what you make of it. If you go into it with the mindset
that it’s going to be horrible and boring then that’s
how it will be. But if you get involved with all of the
different things that go on at Sam it’s so much more fun! You have to be here anyways
so why not make the best of it?”
- Elizabeth Henningsen
“My advice is to stop procrastinating and get your
work done ahead of time. It will take some weight off your shoulders and make you less stressful. I wish
someone had told me to join extracurricular activities and
more after school clubs. I missed out on so much.”
- Monica Cruz
“To not skip and get to class I tell that to my
underclassmen from cheer.”
- Cintya Guerrero
“Do as much as you can in high school. You won’t get
a chance to relive your high school career, unless you
fail. But we don’t want to do that.” - Vyveca Wiley
“Be sure to make the college and career center your
best friend!”
- Demetric Patton
“Ball with the same people you ate off a plate with.”
- Davoncia Williams
WORDS OF WISDOM
“Do what you want and what feels right. The only
way you’ll be happy or reach success in your high school
years is to ignore others. Also don’t procrastinate,
it’s awful and more stressing than actually doing your work on time.”
- Sonia Graciano
“Don’t think of high school as a year to goof off. Make sure you have your goals
planned out and ready for you to accomplish
them because it goes by faster than you think.
The last thing you want is to fail when you’ve
come so far.”-Taziana Miller
“I wish someone would have told me what a heck
of a ride high school can be and how much it means to
get your grades in and have good friends you can count
on. Work hard, but most importantly
ENJOY YOUR TIME IN SCHOOL!!!”
- Mark A. Capo
“Time in high school goes by so fast. So my advice to you is to be involved with as much as you can, and to have fun while you’re here. Get what
you need to get done in order to graduate, stay on track.”
- Nikki Olivas
“Do not waste time. Have as much fun as
possible, but at the right time, and be
productive.”
- Katelyn Arrambidez
“Do not procrastinate or fall under the influence of
serioritis. Get your priorities straight get your stuff
together.”
- Gabriela Gauffeny
“Don’t be like me and skip the whole first semester of
SR year.”
- Jakera Williams
“Be careful with the people you call
friends.”- Maria Chavez
“Focus on your goals and never give up on it till it is
achieved.”
- Liliana Batiste
“If not now, when?”
- Cecilia Guerrero
“That life might give you a challenge. Same as a goalie in soccer, but that doesn’t keep you from scoring.”
- Martin Chu
“Always strive for more.”
- Christian Guerrero
