Beware:Social Security Scam

As many people know, all Social Securitybeneficiaries must sign up for electronicpayments by March 1, 2013. While this shouldmake the system safer, quicker and moreconvenient it’s still very important to protectyourself from potential scams.

Earlier this week I was contacted by aconstituent after her monthly direct depositSocial Security check failed to show up in herbank account. It appeared as if someonemight have fraudulently obtained her personalinformation and used it to divert her check intoanother bank account.

The local Social Security office resolved theissue and the Social Security Office of theInspector General is investigating the case, butit serves as a reminder to everyone how impor-tant it is to protect your personal financial infor-mation. Unfortunately, she is not alone in be-ing concerned she was the victim of a SocialSecurity scam. According to the Social Secu-rity Administration, there are a number ofscams that are used that target people whodepend on Social Security benefits.

In one such scam, individuals posing as Social

Security employees call and ask for personal

information like your name, Social Security

number and bank account information. The

caller alleges that they need this information to

issue additional funds or rebates, or they al-

lege that because of a computer glitch per-

sonal information has been lost. Another scam

uses an email designed to look like it came

from the Social Security Administration to di-

rect readers to a website where people are

asked to “update their information” that can

then be used by identity thieves and criminals.

And these are just two of the many scams that

target Social Security beneficiaries.

When dealing with Social Security, please

know that Social Security will never send you

an email asking for personal information, such

as your Social Security number, date of birth,

or other private information. If someone from

Social Security does email you requesting in-

formation, don’t respond to the message. In-

stead, contact your local Social Security office

or call 1-800-772-1213. You can also report

suspicious activity to Social Security Office of

the Inspector General Fraud Hotline at 1-800-

269-0271 or online at http://oig.ssa.gov/report-

fraud-waste-or-abuse/fraud-waste-and-abuse.

As Chairman of the Senate Special Committee

on Aging, I take seriously my responsibility to

safeguard the appropriate delivery and receipt

of the millions of Social Security checks for the

seniors and elderly citizens who are served by

the Social Security Administration. I will con-

tinue to work to make sure that the system is

as safe and secure as possible.

Spring Cleaning Your Office:How Long to Keep RecordsExcerpts from: Kiplinger's Personal Finance,www.kiplinger.com and Pam Weston ofmsn.money.com

Spring is a great time of year to get rid of out-dated files and to organize your records. It’simportant to know what kinds of paperwork anddocumentation you can toss, what you shouldkeep, and for how long. Review your year-end statements to make

sure they accurately reflect the monthlystatements you received from your bank, broker and other financial institutions. Thenyou can toss the monthly statements. Keepthose year-end statements in your tax files forat least three years after the due date of yourreturn (or six years if you’re self-employed).

Although it’s recommended that you keep yourtax returns for at least six years, you may wantto hold on to them forever (or at least a digitalarchive of them), because they can provideclues about your income and investments andother tax information that might come in handyin the distant future. If you have any self-employment income, keep your receipts for atleast six years.

For all loans, including mortgages, you canditch monthly or quarterly statements onceyou get the year-end summaries, and you candestroy the year-end summaries when you'vepaid off the loans. However, you should keepindefinitely the final notice showing a loan hasbeen paid off in case a disorganized lender orunscrupulous collector pretends the debthasn't been paid and tries to dun you.

For insurance purposes, keep receipts andappraisals for big purchases as long as youown the items.

If you are in a traditional pension, hang ontoany correspondence you get about it.Employers do go out of business!

Important documents like birth, marriage anddeath certificates, divorce papers and militarydischarge papers should be kept for life.

Toss ATM and bank deposit receipts after youreconcile them with bank statements.

Once a purchase shows up on your credit cardstatement, you can ditch the slip.

Toss paper copies of bills as soon as the nextmonth’s bill acknowledging your last paymentarrives (unless you need to keep the bills fortaxes).

When you get a new Social Security state-ment, ditch the old one. You may also want tokeep your Medicare Summary Notices untilthe bill and claims have been paid in full.

Hang on to receipts for major home improve-ments.

Ditch your pay stubs as soon as you receiveyour W-2 for the year.

And when you do decide to toss any of thesepapers, be sure to shred them so yourgarbage doesn’t become a treasure trove foridentity thieves.
