Transcript of senior anglers of Nova Scotia. anglers of Nova Scotia. Forward People are drawn to sportfishing for...

Committed to enhancing

angling opportunities for

physically challenged and

senior anglers of Nova Scotia.

Forward

People are drawn to sportfishing for different reasons. Some seek

the solitude of the back country, others a rustic campsite nestled in

the woods, while others look for a social setting with convenient

facilities. No matter what the reason or the setting, they all seek an

enjoyable outdoor angling experience.

Individuals with disabilities and seniors have diverse recreational

needs and preferences, yet for a large and growing segment of our

population, few areas are accessible for sportfishing.

This brochure highlights the various Barrier Free sportfishing sites

across the province and will serve as a valuable tool for handicapped

and senior anglers. It provides information on: (1) the Barrier Free

Access to Sportfishing Program, (2) where the sites are located, (3)

what species of fish anglers can expect to catch at the site, and (4)

what other facilities are available at or near the site.

Background

One of the most difficult issues to be overcome by a disabled or

senior angler is finding suitable venues to fish. The Barrier Free

Access to Sportfishing Program was developed to provide

recreational angling opportunities to physically challenged and

senior anglers of the province through the construction of piers,

ramps, platforms and other infrastructure directed towards

facilitating this activity.

Additionally, the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and

Aquaculture is pleased to provide handicapped anglers of the

province with general fishing licenses, free of charge. For more

information about handicapped licenses, contact your local office of

the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources.

Within the Halifax Regional Municipality, Callow Wheelchair

Busses is a non-profit organization which provides recreational

outings, in an effort to promote a better quality of life for physically,

mentally and visually challenged individuals. They can be contacted

at (902) 422-9433.

Diversification - Barrier Free Access to Sportfishing Program and are

designed to provide a safe yet enjoyable angling experience for

physically challenged and senior anglers of the province.

Additionally, there are other locations throughout the province

that, although they do not have barrier free structures, can still

provide gratifying angling experiences provided safety is kept in

mind.

The Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture website

provides additional information and detailed instructions on how to
