City of Puyallup Senior Advisory Board Minutes

November 13, 2018 Special Meeting

BOARDMEMBERS PRESENT: Vice Chair Mary Ugelstad, Board members Lynn Coleman, Rick Crozier, Nancy Strackbein, Mike Boisture BOARDMEMBERS EXCUSED: Board Member Renee Genett STAFF MEMBERS PRESENT: Parks and Recreation Director Sarah Harris, Activity Center Manager Doug McCormick, Deputy City Clerk Aimee Pearson APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA Board Action: A motion was made by Mr. Crozier and seconded by Mr. Boisture, to approve the agenda. The motion passed 5-0. CONSIDERATIONS AND REQUESTS Ms. Linda Henry presented the board with the Age Friendly Action Plan. Ms. Henry explained the goals of the Action Plan which included livable communities; changing what being age-friendly looks like; and education for residents. She provided an overview of the different phases of implementation and described the survey that will be used to create the final report for AARP. Ms. Henry encouraged the board to endorse the plan for consideration by the City Council. She concluded by outlining her intended timeline for presenting the Action Plan to the Council on December 4th 2018 and obtaining final approval by January 8th 2019. Board Action: Mr. Crozier moved to endorse the Age Friendly Action Plan, second by Mr. Boisture. The motion passed 5-0. STAFF REPORTS Activity Center Manager Doug McCormick commented that the board members could review the report. He also discussed options for a survey for the Activity Center. Board members suggested adding the following items to the next meeting agenda: air conditioning at the Activity Center; the role of the board in the Age Friendly Action Plan, and meeting every month. ADVISORY BOARD NOMINATIONS/ELECTION OF OFFICERS Board Action: Ms. Uglestad nominated Mr. Crozier for Board Chair, second by Ms. Strackbein. Mr. Crozier was appointed as Chair by a unanimous vote.

Subject:Purchase of two Triobikes - Cycling Without Age

Recommendation:Provide feedback to staff regarding possible uses and sources of volunteer drivers. In addition,staff will provide information about the Cycling Without Age Organization and would likeinput from Board as to whether there is interest in establishing a chapter in Puyallup.

Background:In the 2019 budget, the City Council allocated $15,000 for the purchase of two Triobikes. ATriobike Taxi style electric bike is a bike designed for transporting seniors who still enjoy thewind in their hair. The bike can transport two adults plus driver, has soft cushion seating andhas been adapted to make it accessible for people with walking difficulties. The bike providesseatbelts for the passengers and has a handy storage unit, retractable hood and waterproofblanket for bad weather.

Background:National Senior Health and Fitness day is a nationwide health and fitness event for olderadults. Over 100,000 older adults are estimated to participate at more than 1000 locationsacross the county. This will be the second year that the Puyallup Activity Center hasparticipated in the event. Staff have put together a tentative schedule of activities for the dayand are seeking Board input on the schedule. Board members will have the opportunity tosuggest additional program ideas.

Please join the Puyallup Activity Center as we participant in a

nationwide health and fitness event for older adults. This year

will mark the 26th anniversary of the program, and more than

100,000 older adults are estimated to participate at local events

at more than 1,000 locations across the country. The event’s

goals are to promote the importance of regular physical activity,

and to showcase what local organizations are doing to improve

the health and fitness of older adults in their communities. The

Puyallup Activity Center will be featuring our exercise room and

fitness programs including a special walk highlighting Puyallup’s

Beautiful Outdoor Art Gallery. The fitness classes that will be

featured include the Happy Exercisers, Video Exercise and

more......Healthy snacks will be available in our lounge area

Puyallup Activity CenterSenior Services Report

February 2019

Annual St. Valentine’s Day PartyThe Activity Center hosted its annual St. Valentine’s Day party on Wednesday, February 13th. The event occurred at the Pioneer Park Pavilion and around 200 seniors festively dressed in red and white attire were in attendance. Entertainment was provided by the ever-popular performance group’ the Fun Singers” and the Activity Centers very own Belly dance class – the “Sa’Diyah Dancers. The Party included a nice catered lunch, a large assortment of beautifully decorated cakes was brought in for dessert, and everyone received a Valentine’s Day box of chocolates. In addition, several hundred pounds of food was collected at the Party for the Puyallup Food Bank.Attendance: 200

Puyallup Lions Club Eye Glasses Drop boxThe Puyallup Activity Center has a donation box for eye glasses. Anyone wishing to give or discard their eye glasses, whether they are regular glasses or sun glasses, is more than welcome to bring them to our Center and discard them. The Puyallup Lions Club collects the used glasses, has an optometrist who refurbishes them with new lenses and then provides low income seniors with a pair of new glasses.

Mystery MadnessPuyallup trip-goers had an exciting day as they travelled to the picturesque town of Gig Harbor, where they experienced Java and Clay, a trendy pottery painting studio and coffee lounge. They were able to choose a piece of pottery and paint the piece chosen while enjoying coffee and pastries. Following this fun activity, our participants ventured to the ever-popular Tides Tavern for lunch on the water. Following a nice lunch, there was ample time to shop the quaint stores before heading back to Puyallup.Attendance: 16

Night of Delight: Tokyo Steak HouseOne time per month, the Puyallup Activity Center offers an opportunity to join friends and experience one of the great restaurants in the local area. This opportunity not only allows trip-goers to spend time with old friends, but also allows individuals an opportunity to eat with a group of friends. For the month of February, everyone enjoyed Tokyo Steak House, a Teppanyaki style dinner where they enjoyed authentic tableside cooking and entertainment for (a postponed) Valentine’s Day celebration. A fast-favorite restaurant amongst all.Attendance: 16

Great Decisions Discussion Group 2019

The Puyallup Activity Center has partnered again this year with Learning is ForEver and the Puyallup Public Library to offer Great Decisions Discussion Group 2019. Great Decisions is America’s largest discussion program on world affairs and is sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association. The program model involves reading the Great Decisions briefing book, meeting to watch a DVD pertaining to the theme of the week, then discussing critical global issues facing America Today. Topics presented include: Global Migration, The Middle East: Regional Disorder, Nuclear Negotiations, Nationalism in Europe, Decoding U.S. – China Trade, Cyber Conflicts, The U.S. and Mexico: Partnership Tested, and the State of U.S. Diplomacy.Attendance: Varies 15 – 22

S.A.I.L. Program

Puyallup seniors are enthusiastically starting off the New Year with a re-commitment to their health. One of the many options available to them is participating in the S.A.I.L fitness program. S.A.I.L. (which stands for Stay Active and Independent for Life) is a senior developed exercise program with the goal of promoting healthier life styles for adults 65 and older. The entire curriculum of activities performed in the S.A.I.L. program can help seniors reduce their chances of falling and improve their strength and balance if done regularly. The S.A.I.L. Program routinecan be done standing or sitting and each class meets for one hour.Attendance: 25

Scramble Bar

The Puyallup Activity Center is hosting a new “Scramble (Egg) Bar” on the last Tuesday of each month. The event is sponsored by Bonaventure of South Hill and breakfast includes choice of toppings and fresh muffins. January was the first time offering this event, and we are looking forward to the community learning about the event.Attendance: 40

Night of Delight: Johnny’s Seafood

One time per month, the Puyallup Activity Center, offers an opportunity to join friends and experience one of the great restaurants Pierce County has to offer. This opportunity not only allows trip-goers to spend time with old friends, but also allows individuals an opportunity to enjoy a meal together. For the month of January, our participants enjoyed a wonderful evening at Johnny’s Seafood Restaurant on the waterfront of Tacoma’s Thea Foss Waterway. Attendance: 17

Senior Services ReportMarch 2019

Woodcarving

Woodcarving is a popular activity for older adults across our nation and is offered locally every Thursday at the Activity Center. Woodcarving is a creative art outlet that has numerous benefits including improved mental health function, reduced stress level, improved hand-eye coordination, and an overall happier disposition. This class welcomes all levels of ability and are always willing to lend a hand or a tool to help a fellow woodcarver.

Farrel- McWhirter Farm Park

On Tuesday, March 10th, Puyallup seniors traveled to Redmond, WA to explore Farrel–McWhirter Farm Park. This hidden gem offers a unique combination of a lush 100-year-old forest mixed with a children’s animal farm, a horse arena and covered picnic shelters. Upon our arrival to the park, we were greeted by one friendly cat who jumped onboard the bus to welcome us to the park. Our participants enjoy the wonderful trails through the two-mile loop

around Mackey Creek. We also were excited to find the “famous” tree hidden within the park, the nursing tree, seen below.Attendance: 13 people

Pancake BreakfastThe Puyallup Activity Center provides a wonderful Pancake Breakfast for our community on the second Saturday of each month. from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM. The delicious breakfast consists of all the pancakes you can eat, along with eggs, sausage, orange juice, and coffee. The cost is only $4.00 for adults and 1.00 for Children 6 and under. For the month of March, the Puyallup Valley Lions Club sponsored the event in conjunction with Brookdale Courtyard of Puyallup.
